The right PS5 rhythm game depends on two things: whether its songs match your taste and whether you enjoy its physical style of play. Choose Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival for Japanese pop, anime and game music with drum-pattern play; choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line for a Final Fantasy-focused library; and choose Beat Saber, Synth Riders or Pistol Whip only if you already want a VR motion game. Before buying, check which tracks are included, which require a pass or pack, what hardware you own, and whether PlayStation support is still active.
PS5 rhythm games at a glance
These games do not offer interchangeable versions of the same experience. Their music, controls, equipment and ongoing support differ enough that a song list alone cannot identify the best choice.

Start with the music you will actually play
A headline song count is less useful than a list of tracks you recognize and want to replay. Separate every candidate’s music into three questions: what is in the base game, what is included in a subscription or pass, and what must be bought as an individual pack.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival
Bandai Namco describes the base game as containing 76 songs. Its paid Taiko Music Pass provides access to more than 700 additional songs. Those figures are publisher-stated totals rather than an independently audited count, and the available catalog can change. Examine the current in-game or store catalog for the exact anime, VOCALOID, game-music and pop tracks you want.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The pass is not the same thing as owning every song permanently. Treat it as a separate recurring or access-based cost, then check whether a favorite track is in the pass or in a separately sold pack. Regional catalogs and prices differ, so a list seen in one PlayStation Store territory may not match yours.
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
Square Enix presents the standard game as containing 385 Final Fantasy tracks. The library is therefore narrower by franchise but unusually clear in identity: it is designed for players who want music from across Final Fantasy rather than a mixed selection of licensed artists. The product page also describes more than 100 Final Fantasy characters and three game modes.
Confirm the edition and downloadable track list before purchase. A particular entry, spin-off or arrangement may be part of an edition upgrade or DLC rather than the standard package, and availability can vary by territory.

Beat Saber
Beat Saber’s PlayStation catalog is a fixed point rather than an actively expanding one. The official support information says songs and music packs released on or before June 18, 2025 remain purchasable. The final PlayStation content release was Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra on June 5, 2025. Do not buy it expecting new PlayStation music releases after that date.
Existing packs can still make sense if their artists fit your taste and you want the block-slashing format. Check the current store listing for the specific pack you want instead of assuming that every song available on another platform is available on PlayStation.
Synth Riders
PlayStation’s guide describes optional Synth Riders DLC with songs and stages from artists including Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and The Offspring. This makes it a candidate for players who prefer a motion-led electronic or licensed-music experience and are comfortable expanding the library with individual add-ons. The guide also describes play modifiers, so the same song can be approached with different movement rules.

Pistol Whip
Pistol Whip is presented as a rhythm and music game in PlayStation’s VR guide, but the reviewed information does not establish a comparable song-count figure. Choose it for its action-oriented, motion-based format rather than on an assumed library size. If a large, easily itemized catalog is your main buying criterion, compare the store’s current track and stage list directly.
Match the game to the action your hands and body perform
Drum-pattern play: Taiko no Tatsujin
Taiko turns the beat into drum instructions. You read the chart and strike the appropriate drum areas at the right time. The PlayStation listing describes four difficulty modes, allowing a gradual move from simple timing to denser patterns. A dedicated drum controller can make the arcade-like action more natural, but the game remains usable with a regular PS5 controller.
This format suits players who enjoy visible note patterns, repeated practice and the feel of performing a rhythm rather than steering a character. It is also the strongest non-VR choice in this group for someone specifically asking which PS5 rhythm games use a drum controller.
Stage charts and party progression: Theatrhythm
Theatrhythm presents Final Fantasy music through stage-style rhythm play combined with party elements. Your attention stays on timed inputs and the changing chart while the character roster and series presentation supply a role-playing flavor. It is a better fit than Taiko if your motivation is hearing familiar Final Fantasy themes and building a party around them, rather than simulating a drum performance.
Block slashing: Beat Saber
Beat Saber asks you to swing VR controllers to slash incoming blocks in time with the music. The appeal is physical immersion: the chart occupies your play space, and movement is part of the timing challenge. It is not a conventional button-based rhythm game, so a headset, room to move safely and tolerance for repeated arm swings matter as much as musical taste.

Synth Riders also uses VR motion, but its interaction is built around reaching and moving through targets rather than reproducing a drum chart. PlayStation’s guide specifically calls out modifiers and a local Party mode, which can help a group vary the challenge. Consider it when you want a dance-like, motion-first session and optional artist packs.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Action rhythm: Pistol Whip
Pistol Whip combines rhythm timing with motion-based shooting. The physical action is closer to an action game than to a pure note-lane or drum simulator. It can appeal to players who want the beat to drive movement and combat decisions, but it should not be selected solely because it appears in a rhythm-game roundup.
Check equipment before you buy
Standard PS5 controller
Theatrhythm and Taiko can be approached with a normal PS5 controller. This is the lowest-friction option: buy the game, launch it and learn the charts without a separate peripheral. Read the current product page for the exact edition and console support before paying, especially if you are buying a bundle or a cross-generation version.
Taiko drum controller
The official PlayStation listing confirms compatibility with a Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller for PS5, PS4 and Windows PC. The accessory is optional, not a stated requirement. Verify the current model, regional availability and connection method on the store page; compatibility information does not guarantee that a particular retailer has stock or that every similarly named drum is supported.

Beat Saber, Synth Riders and Pistol Whip are VR choices. Budget for the compatible PlayStation VR headset and motion controllers, and confirm that the exact game version supports the VR hardware connected to your PS5. Clear a safe play area, allow space for arm movement and account for the setup time. A VR game is a poor value if you are buying expensive hardware solely for a format you may not enjoy.
Calculate the real cost of the music you want
Compare total cost rather than the base-game sticker price. Write down the songs or artists you care about, then identify where each one is sold.
| Cost layer | What to verify | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Included tracks, edition and console version | Determines how much music you receive before add-ons |
| Subscription or pass | Taiko Music Pass terms, access period and current catalog | A large library may require continuing payment rather than one-time ownership |
| Individual packs | Artist, anime, pop, classical or game-music pack price and region | You may spend less by buying only the series you will play |
| Peripheral | Compatible Taiko drum controller or VR headset and controllers | Hardware can outweigh the game’s own price |
| Multiplayer access | Local-player limit, online mode and current support | A game’s social value depends on how you intend to play |
Taiko has the clearest example of a library that can expand dramatically beyond the base game: 76 included songs, more than 700 songs through the paid Music Pass and separately sold packs. The sensible approach is to price only the pass or packs that contain your preferred music. Do not assume that buying the base game automatically grants the full catalog.

Prices, promotions and DLC availability are regional and volatile. Check your own PlayStation Store territory immediately before purchase and note whether a displayed price is a one-time purchase, a recurring pass or a bundle with conditions.
Weigh multiplayer and support status
Taiko’s local and online options
Bandai Namco describes Story mode, Taiko Land activities for up to four players and an online Dondoko Town mode. That combination makes Taiko a practical choice for a household that wants local sessions as well as online features, provided the current version still offers the mode you intend to use.
Theatrhythm’s shared play
Square Enix describes both local and online multiplayer for Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. Its appeal is strongest when your group already knows Final Fantasy music, since the shared franchise library gives everyone a common reference point.
Synth Riders’ party focus
PlayStation’s guide describes a local Party mode and 10-player online multiplayer for Synth Riders. Those features make it worth considering when social VR is a priority, but verify the current network requirements and whether every player needs compatible VR equipment.
Beat Saber’s PlayStation cutoff
Beat Saber remains available on PlayStation, and support continues according to its official FAQ. However, PlayStation multiplayer was discontinued on February 26, 2026, and no new PlayStation content has arrived since June 2025. Existing purchased songs and packs remain the relevant value proposition; do not treat the game as an ongoing PlayStation live-service catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical decision process
- List five songs, artists or series you would replay. Include genres such as anime, Japanese pop, Final Fantasy, electronic music or licensed artists. If you cannot find those preferences in a candidate’s current catalog, remove it.
- Choose your interaction. Select drum-pattern timing for Taiko, stage charts and party progression for Theatrhythm, block slashing for Beat Saber, motion targets and modifiers for Synth Riders, or action shooting driven by rhythm for Pistol Whip.
- Mark your hardware. Decide whether you will use a regular controller, purchase the compatible Taiko drum or commit to a PlayStation VR setup. Do not count VR games as controller-only options.
- Price the exact library. Add the base game, the pass or packs containing your chosen songs and any required hardware. Use your local PlayStation Store because prices and catalogs differ by region.
- Check the social plan. For local play, compare Taiko’s up-to-four-player activities, Theatrhythm’s local multiplayer and Synth Riders’ Party mode. For online play, verify the current service status rather than relying on an old review.
- Check support dates. This is essential for Beat Saber, where PlayStation content and multiplayer have defined end dates. For every other game, read the current store and support pages for platform-specific changes.
- Buy the smallest commitment that answers your question. Start with the base game or a single desired pack when possible. Upgrade to a pass or peripheral only after confirming that the chart style and music keep you playing.
Which PS5 rhythm game fits each type of player?
Choose Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival if you want Japanese music and a drum
Taiko is the clearest match for Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID and game-music categories, especially when you want a dedicated drum accessory or local group play. Its four difficulty modes support progression, while Story mode, Taiko Land and online Dondoko Town offer more than a single score-attack loop. Check whether your favorite songs are among the 76 base tracks, in the paid Music Pass or in a separate pack before deciding what the game will cost you.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line if Final Fantasy is the reason you want rhythm play
Theatrhythm’s 385-track standard library, more than 100 characters and three modes give it a focused proposition. It is the safer choice when the series itself matters more than broad genre variety. Confirm your preferred Final Fantasy entries and DLC track list by territory, then use local or online multiplayer if you want to share the catalog.
Choose Beat Saber if you already want VR block slashing
Beat Saber remains a compelling physical format for players who own the required VR equipment and like swinging to music. It is not the choice for someone expecting new PlayStation songs, because the final PlayStation release was June 5, 2025 and multiplayer ended February 26, 2026. Judge it on the existing catalog and packs you can still purchase.
Choose Synth Riders if social VR and motion variety matter most
Synth Riders deserves consideration for players who want motion-led play, modifiers, local Party sessions and 10-player online multiplayer, with optional packs featuring artists such as Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and The Offspring. The hardware commitment is substantial, so try the format only if VR is already part of your PS5 setup or a deliberate purchase.
Choose Pistol Whip if rhythm should drive an action game
Pistol Whip is for a player who wants music to shape movement and shooting rather than a traditional drum or note-lane chart. Since the available information does not establish a comparable song total, inspect its current stages and music directly and decide on the action format first.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by song count alone: A larger catalog is useless if it lacks your preferred artists or series. Check the actual track list.
- Confusing a pass with ownership: Treat Taiko’s Music Pass as a separate access cost and read its current terms.
- Assuming every version shares DLC: Confirm the PS5 edition, territory and add-on compatibility on the current store page.
- Ignoring the physical action: Watch or try representative gameplay before choosing between drum hits, stage inputs and VR swings.
- Forgetting hardware costs: Include a Taiko drum or VR equipment in your budget, not just the software.
- Using outdated multiplayer advice: Beat Saber’s PlayStation multiplayer ended on February 26, 2026; older guides may still describe it as active.
- Expecting a universal catalog: Regional licensing changes which packs and prices appear in your PlayStation Store.
Final recommendation
There is no objective single winner for PS5 rhythm games. Choose Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival when Japanese pop, anime or game music and drum-pattern play are your priorities; choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line when a 385-track Final Fantasy library is the main attraction; choose Synth Riders or Pistol Whip for specific VR motion styles; and choose Beat Saber only with a clear understanding that PlayStation content stopped in 2025 and multiplayer stopped in 2026. Your best purchase is the one whose current songs, physical controls, add-on cost and hardware all fit the way you actually plan to play.
