NYT Strands is a daily word game available through a web browser and the NYT Games app. The New York Times Help Center lists the daily puzzle as free to play, while a New York Times account is the practical way to keep puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks available when you switch devices.

You can play while signed out, but that progress remains on the device where you started. Sign in before moving between a phone, tablet, computer, browser, or app. The Games app’s Me tab is where Strands statistics and streak information are displayed. Result sharing is available through a game share control according to independent guides, although the exact current button and preview should be checked in the live game.

How do you play NYT Strands?

Open Strands in a web browser or in the NYT Games app, then solve the day’s word puzzle. Independent descriptions of the game show a 6-by-8 letter grid containing words related to a daily theme. Letters are selected along connected paths that can turn. The puzzle also includes a special theme-spanning answer commonly called a spangram.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those board dimensions and mechanics come from secondary guides rather than an accessible official NYT rules page. The live puzzle is therefore the authority if the interface or instructions differ. A secondary guide also says that finding valid words unrelated to the theme can help earn hints; treat that as an explanatory description, not as a guarantee that every current version awards hints in exactly that way.

What do you need before starting?

  • A current web browser, or the NYT Games app on an iOS or Android device.
  • An internet connection to open the daily game and send or sync account information.
  • A New York Times account if you want progress, statistics, and streaks available on more than one device.
  • A Games subscription only if you want the broader subscription entitlement; the daily Strands listing itself is free.

You do not need to install anything for browser play. The app is useful if you mostly solve on a phone or tablet and want the built-in Me area for game statistics. Whichever route you choose, note the account you use before beginning a long-running streak.

Where can you access Strands?

Web browser

Use a current browser on a computer, phone, or tablet and open the New York Times Games site. Browser play is useful when you want the same game environment on a larger screen or do not want to install an app. Sign in to your New York Times account in the browser if you want your record to follow you elsewhere.

Browser access also makes it easy to switch between a desktop and a mobile browser, but each browser can maintain its own local data when you are signed out. A private or incognito window is especially unlikely to preserve a local session after it closes, so sign in if continuity matters.

NYT Games app

The official Games app is available for both iOS and Android. Install it from your device’s app store, open the app, and create or sign in to a New York Times account. If your subscription was purchased through Apple, the app’s help instructions direct you to use the Apple sign-in path when setting up access.

After signing in, open the Games area and choose Strands. The app gives you a dedicated place to review statistics and streaks, but it is not a separate progress system: the New York Times account remains the important link when you also play on the web.

Browser or app: which should you choose?

Route What it provides Useful when Main caution
Web browser Access to the daily Games experience without installing the app You play on a computer, use several browsers, or prefer a larger screen Signed-out progress can remain only in that browser’s local storage
NYT Games app Games access on iOS and Android, plus the Me area for statistics and streaks You mainly play on a phone or tablet and want in-app progress details Check that the app is signed in to the same account as your browser

Is NYT Strands free?

The New York Times Help Center lists Strands among the free daily games available to people who do not have a Games subscription. That statement applies to the daily game; it does not establish that every related feature is free.

A Games subscription provides access to all games and puzzles. Subscription entitlements, archive access, and pricing can change, so check the current Games subscription information before purchasing or assuming that an older puzzle archive or companion feature is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, “free daily game” answers whether you can open and solve the current day’s Strands without buying a Games plan. It does not answer whether you can replay every past puzzle, use every other New York Times game, or receive any particular bonus feature. Those are subscription questions and should be checked against the plan details shown when you subscribe.

Access question What the New York Times Help Center establishes
Can a person without a Games subscription play the daily Strands puzzle? Yes. Strands is listed among the free daily games.
Does “free daily game” automatically include archives or every Games feature? No such broader entitlement is established by the free-daily listing.
What does a Games subscription cover? Access to all games and puzzles, subject to the subscription terms in force when you subscribe.
Should you rely on an old price or promotion? No. Open the current official subscription page and review the terms for your region and purchase method.

How do you save Strands progress?

When you are signed out

When you play without logging in, your progress is stored locally on that device. Clearing browser data, changing devices, moving from a browser to the app, or uninstalling the app can therefore leave the unfinished puzzle and its record behind.

Local storage is convenient for a quick session, but it is not a reliable backup. A browser update or device cleanup may also remove local information. If a streak matters to you, sign in before solving rather than waiting until after a device problem.

When you are signed in

Signing in to a New York Times account links saved puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks to the account. The Help Center specifically recommends logging in to play across multiple devices and web browsers. Use the same account everywhere; creating or using a different account will not make the first account’s record appear.

The safest habit is to check the account identity before opening the puzzle on each device. If the app uses one email address and the browser uses another sign-in method, the two sessions may represent different accounts even if both display your name.

Move from a computer to a phone

  1. On the computer, open Strands and confirm that you are signed in to the New York Times account you intend to keep using.
  2. On the phone, open the NYT Games app or the Games site in a browser.
  3. Sign in with that same account before opening Strands.
  4. Open the puzzle and check whether your saved state, statistics, and streak information are present.
  5. Only after confirming the correct account should you continue solving or change local browser and app data.

If you began while signed out, the locally stored state may not transfer. Before changing devices, sign in whenever possible so the account has an opportunity to retain the record. If the old device still shows the puzzle, leave its local data intact while you verify the account on the new device.

Move between two browsers

Sign in to the same New York Times account in both browsers. A browser account session is different from the browser’s local cache, so do not assume that copying a bookmark or opening the same URL will carry an unfinished puzzle over. If the second browser shows a blank state, check the account first and avoid clearing the first browser until you know the saved record is available.

Can you play on both a phone and a computer?

Yes. The official guidance supports playing across multiple devices and web browsers after you log in to your New York Times account. The browser and app are simply two access routes; the account is what connects the saved record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable setup is to use the app on a phone and a browser on a computer, while signing in with the same account on both. If one device shows a different puzzle state, first check the account identity on each device before attempting to clear data or reinstall anything.

Switching devices in the middle of a puzzle is possible, but give the first device a moment to finish saving before closing it. The official guidance establishes account-based access to saved progress; it does not promise that every unsent tap or selection will appear instantly on another screen.

Where are Strands statistics and streaks shown?

In the NYT Games app, open the Me tab. The app help page says to select the Strands game card to expand its statistics. This is the documented location for Strands stats and streak information in the app.

  1. Launch the NYT Games app.
  2. Tap Me.
  3. Select the Strands game card.
  4. Expand the card to view the statistics and streak details the app provides.

If the card or record is missing, verify that the app is signed in to the account used for play. A game played only while signed out may have a local record on another device rather than an account-linked history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Help Center guidance does not establish a separate web dashboard path for every statistic. If you need a particular figure and do not see it in the browser, check the Games app’s Me tab rather than assuming the record was lost.

What are the Strands board, theme words, and spangram?

Independent game guides describe Strands as a 6-by-8 grid. The objective is to find words connected to the puzzle’s theme, tracing adjacent letters in paths that may turn. A spangram is described as a word or phrase that spans the puzzle’s theme and helps reveal how the other answers fit together.

Paths are not limited to straight lines in those descriptions; connected letters can change direction as you trace an answer. The theme gives you a way to test whether a discovered word belongs, while the spangram is a broad answer that ties the theme together. These explanations can make the grid easier to understand, but they do not replace the instructions displayed in the current game.

Those details are useful for understanding the puzzle, but they are not confirmed here by an accessible official NYT rules page. Read the instructions shown in the current puzzle, especially if the board, terminology, hint behavior, or selection rules appear different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do non-theme words matter?

One independent guide says that valid words outside the theme can contribute toward earning hints. Because that rule comes from a secondary source, use it as a strategy to test in the live puzzle rather than as a permanent promise about scoring. The game’s current on-screen feedback should determine whether a word counts.

Do not assume that every ordinary dictionary word is a theme answer or that every version awards the same hint credit. If the game indicates progress toward a hint, follow that feedback; if it does not, rely on the current instructions instead of an older guide.

How do you share Strands results?

An independent how-to page reports that Strands includes a share control that produces an emoji-style results pattern. Official, accessible documentation did not confirm the current button label, menu location, or every item included in the shared output.

After finishing a puzzle, look for the game’s Share option, open the preview, and review it before posting or sending it. The exact control and preview can vary with the current interface. Checking the preview lets you confirm what the recipient will see and helps avoid sharing more information than intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should you check the preview?

The available third-party description supports the existence of an emoji-style result, but it does not establish a permanent format or guarantee that the same details will appear in every version of the game. Treat the preview shown by your current browser or app as the definitive output.

If you prefer to describe your result manually, you can send a plain message instead of using the in-game control. A manual description is not the same as the game-generated share format and may reveal more or less than the preview, so reread it before posting.

What should you do if sharing is unavailable?

  1. Finish the puzzle and wait for the completion screen to load.
  2. Look for Share on the result screen or in its menu.
  3. If a preview appears, inspect it before selecting a messaging or social destination.
  4. If no control appears, reopen the completed puzzle in the same browser or app and check the current result screen again.
  5. Do not rely on an old screenshot to identify a button, since labels and placement can change.

The available guidance supports the general existence of an emoji-style sharing method, not a guaranteed path through every current release. The live interface is the best test of what your account and device currently support.

Troubleshooting common access and progress problems

Your progress disappeared after changing devices

  • Confirm that both devices use the same New York Times account.
  • Check whether the original puzzle was played while signed out; signed-out progress is stored locally.
  • Reopen Strands after signing in rather than relying on a browser or app session that was already open.
  • Avoid clearing browser data or deleting the app until you have checked the account and local-device situation.
  • If the old device still has the puzzle, keep it available while you test the account on the new device.

The app does not show your streak or statistics

  • Open Me and select the Strands card to expand its statistics.
  • Verify the account currently signed in to the app.
  • If you played on another device while logged out, that local record may not be attached to the account shown in the app.
  • Check the browser or device where you originally played before concluding that the record is gone.

You are unsure whether a subscription is required

The daily Strands listing is free according to the New York Times Help Center. A subscription is relevant when you want the broader Games entitlement, such as access to all games and puzzles. Check the current subscription page for the terms that apply in your region and at the time you subscribe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the share control

Finish the puzzle first, then inspect the current result screen and its menus for Share. Because the exact interface was not confirmed by official accessible instructions, do not rely on an old screenshot or a button position from another version. If the game offers a preview, use it before sending.

The app and browser show different answers or progress

First compare the account email or sign-in method on both devices. Next, determine whether one session was started while signed out. Only after those checks should you close sessions, clear local data, or reinstall the app. The account-linked record is the durable path; local records can remain isolated.
