“Puzzle adventure” covers games that ask for different kinds of thinking. Before choosing one, decide whether you want to learn visual rules, manipulate objects and spaces, or interpret clues—and how much exploration, story, and uncertainty you enjoy alongside the puzzles.
Start with the kind of thinking you enjoy
Genre labels do not tell you what you will be doing moment to moment. A better starting point is the puzzle language: what the game asks you to notice, infer, and try.
- Learn and apply a rule: You look for a visual pattern or rule, test your understanding, then apply it to variations. This suits players who enjoy noticing how an idea changes across a set of puzzles. In a 2016 TIME interview, The Witness creator Jonathan Blow said of its puzzle panels, “they’re about ideas. They’re not just a thing you solve.”
- Manipulate objects or spaces: You reason about how things fit together, move, or relate across locations. COCOON is a relevant example: its Steam description centers on worlds contained within orbs that can be carried.
- Interpret clues and reconstruct events: You gather information, connect details, and form explanations. This approach often makes mystery and narrative part of the puzzle rather than a separate reward.
Think about which loop sounds satisfying to repeat. A game can combine several approaches, but its central premise gives you a useful clue about what kind of attention it will ask from you.
Choose how much exploration and direction you want
Consider whether you like to roam, discover your own route, and decide what to investigate, or prefer a clearly signposted sequence. Open exploration can make discovery feel more personal; it can also leave you uncertain about where to go next. That uncertainty is different from not understanding an individual puzzle.

The Witness is an example to consider if you want exploration alongside a substantial body of puzzles. Its Steam listing describes a single-player open-world game with dozens of locations and over 500 puzzles. Those are store-description details, not a comparative assessment of how difficult the game is.
Decide how much story you want
Some puzzle adventures put story and mystery into the clues you interpret; others communicate primarily through environments and puzzle ideas. Ask yourself whether you want explicit narrative context, or whether discovering how a world works is enough to keep you engaged.

Outer Wilds may appeal if solar-system exploration and mystery are part of the draw. In a developer playtest update, Mobius Digital described the game as challenging and referred to players who enjoy its story, writing, and mysteries. This is a developer’s description, not an objective comparison of difficulty with other games.
Separate puzzle difficulty from uncertainty
A demanding puzzle and an unclear next step are separate sources of friction. You may enjoy working through a tough inference but dislike having to guess which area to visit; another player may enjoy wandering and find an individual puzzle more challenging. When reading a game’s description, look for clues about both its puzzle loop and how freely you explore.

The examples here do not share a common difficulty scale, so they cannot be ranked objectively as easy or hard. Treat words such as “challenging” as a useful signal about the developer’s description, not a promise of how difficult the game will feel to you.
