Choose Ages if time-travel puzzles appeal to you; choose Seasons if you would rather change the environment to open routes and overcome obstacles. Neither is a required prequel to the other. If you play both, finishing the first gives you a password to use in the second for a more connected adventure.
How the two games differ
Nintendo describes the games as self-contained adventures with different stories and settings. Their signature tools shape the kind of puzzles you solve, so your preference is the most useful way to choose a first game.

The recommendation by play style is a practical fit based on each game’s mechanics, not an order prescribed by Nintendo. Both were originally released for Game Boy Color in 2001, according to Nintendo’s Oracle of Ages page and Oracle of Seasons page.
What happens if you play both?
Complete either game and it gives you a password to enter in the other. Nintendo says the linked experience can unlock certain items, make characters remember earlier actions, and expand story elements. In the linked second quest described on its Oracle of Ages page, your player name carries over, you begin with more items than in the first quest, characters return for cameos, and a final boss battle is added.

Nintendo of America recommends this approach for players interested in a more connected experience: “We recommend playing the games in this way if you’re interested in a more connected experience!” (July 26, 2023, Nintendo’s announcement.) That guidance supports playing one first and then using its password in the other; it does not designate which title must come first.

Nintendo’s current US Game Boy – Nintendo Classics catalog lists both games for access with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Membership is sold separately, as Nintendo noted in its July 2023 announcement. This refers to access through the Switch collection, not to physical Switch cartridges. Availability and membership terms can vary by region and change, so check Nintendo’s local catalog and current terms.
