The best retro console is the one that contains the games you actually want to play. Choose a fixed-library system if you want a simple HDMI plug-and-play experience, or choose a cartridge-based system if you already own compatible Atari games. Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition has 30 preinstalled NES games, the Super NES Classic Edition has its own fixed SNES library, and Atari 2600+ is designed for most original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Check the exact game list, cartridge compatibility, controller requirements and power accessories before buying.
Start with your must-play games
“1980s games” is not one uniform library. Nintendo’s NES represents one group of 8-bit console releases, Super NES represents a later 16-bit generation, and Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges use a different hardware and software ecosystem. A console can be excellent for one group and useless for another, so begin with a written list of five to ten games you consider essential.

When the list is mostly NES releases
Evaluate the NES Classic Edition against Nintendo’s official 30-game list. The Nintendo UK product page identifies games such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Dr. Mario, Final Fantasy, PAC-MAN, Castlevania and Mega Man 2. Those are examples, not a promise that every NES title is included, so inspect the complete list at Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini product page before treating a particular game as covered.

Use Nintendo’s separate Super NES Classic list rather than assuming that an NES game list carries over. The documented library includes Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. When the list is Atari cartridge games
Atari 2600+ is the relevant choice among these systems if your collection is built around Atari cartridges. Atari says it plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and includes a 10-in-1 game cartridge. The wording is not a guarantee that every cartridge works: Atari describes support as most cartridges and publishes a compatibility list. Check the exact cartridge model on Atari’s official Atari 2600+ page before buying.

Availability and pricing can change, especially for older Nintendo hardware, so do not treat a current listing or used-market price as a permanent specification.
Choose between a fixed library and cartridges
Fixed-library systems: NES Classic and Super NES Classic
Nintendo designed these Classic Edition consoles as closed, preloaded systems. Nintendo’s support answer is explicit: “No. Additional games cannot be downloaded to the Classic Edition consoles, nor are these consoles compatible with external storage devices.” In practical terms, the included list is the complete game library. There is no supported purchase, download or USB-storage route for adding another title.

This approach has two advantages: setup is predictable and every game is available from the same menu. It also creates a hard limit. If your favorite game is absent, changing cables, formatting a drive or connecting a storage device will not add it through an officially supported method. Read the list before purchase instead of assuming that a famous game from the same era is present.

Cartridge-based access: Atari 2600+
Atari 2600+ gives you a physical-media path. The included 10-in-1 cartridge lets you start without a separate collection, while the cartridge slot is intended for most original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. This is useful if you already own games or want to build a collection gradually, but “most” is an important qualification. Regional variants, unusual releases and individual cartridge revisions may not be covered. Use Atari’s compatibility information for each specific cartridge and keep the cartridge clean and undamaged.
Check modern-TV connectivity before you buy
All three options described here are intended for modern HDMI displays. Nintendo says both Classic Edition systems work with standard HDMI inputs on televisions and monitors. Atari specifies HDMI output and includes an HDMI cable. That makes the video connection straightforward, but HDMI support does not eliminate every setup requirement.
NES Classic or Super NES Classic connection
- Connect the console’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the television or monitor.
- Connect the documented USB Type A to micro-B power cable to the console.
- Use a 5V/1A USB power adapter, following Nintendo’s support specification at the HDMI and power support page.
- Select the HDMI input used by the console on the display.
- Connect the supplied controller and test the menu before starting a game.
If the screen remains blank, verify the display input first, then reseat both HDMI ends and confirm that the USB power connection is live. A television’s USB socket may not provide the arrangement or output you expect, so use the documented 5V/1A adapter specification rather than assuming every USB port is equivalent.
Atari 2600+ connection
- Connect the included HDMI cable between the Atari 2600+ and the display.
- Connect the included USB-C cable to a suitable power source. The listed package does not include the USB-C power adapter, so plan to supply one separately.
- Insert the 10-in-1 cartridge or a cartridge confirmed on Atari’s compatibility list.
- Select the correct HDMI input and use the console’s controls to start the game.
The missing adapter is easy to overlook because the cable is in the box. Treat the adapter as a required setup item, not an optional upgrade, and check the regional package description before ordering.

Plan for controllers and multiplayer
A console can contain the right games and still be inconvenient if you expect two-player sessions. Nintendo UK states that additional accessories are required for two-player NES play and are sold separately. If multiplayer matters, confirm whether a second compatible controller is included in the listing you are considering and budget for a separate one when it is not.
For a single-player purchase, one working controller may be enough, but inspect its cable length and connector placement in your intended setup. Avoid assuming that a controller from another Nintendo generation will work just because it uses a similar plug. The official product documentation is the authority for accessory compatibility.
Understand the save systems
Suspend Points on Nintendo Classic Editions
Nintendo documents four Suspend Point slots for each preloaded game. A Suspend Point captures your current position so you can return to it from the console menu instead of replaying from the beginning. Games that originally supported in-game saving can retain that original mechanism as well.

Nintendo explains that saving progress to a Suspend Point or resuming from one can overwrite newer in-game progress. Use a consistent routine: complete an in-game save when the game offers one, then create a Suspend Point only when you are certain which state you want to preserve. Do not treat the four slots as four independent copies of every possible in-game save.

Atari 2600+ save expectations
The Atari product information cited for this comparison establishes cartridge and HDMI features, but it does not establish a save-state or Suspend Point feature. Assume that a game’s own cartridge-era behavior is the relevant consideration unless the current manual or product documentation says otherwise. Do not buy it expecting Nintendo-style quick-save slots based on the cartridge support alone.
Use this decision path
- Write the must-play list. Separate NES, SNES and Atari cartridge titles instead of grouping everything as “old games.”
- Check the official Nintendo lists. Confirm NES titles on the NES Classic Mini page and SNES titles on the Super NES Classic support page.
- Check each Atari cartridge. Atari 2600+ is a fit only when the cartridges you care about appear on Atari’s compatibility information.
- Choose your expansion model. Select Nintendo when the fixed list is sufficient; select Atari when physical cartridge access is central to the purchase.
- Verify the display. Confirm that the television or monitor has an available standard HDMI input.
- Verify power accessories. Nintendo’s setup calls for the documented USB Type A to micro-B cable and 5V/1A adapter. Atari includes a USB-C cable but not the adapter.
- Verify multiplayer needs. Add the cost and availability of a second controller if two-player NES gaming is part of the plan.
- Check the seller and condition. Older Nintendo Classic Editions may be encountered as used hardware. Inspect what is included, test the controller and avoid paying an inflated price merely because a listing claims to be scarce.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying by console shape instead of game list
A miniature console can look convincing on a shelf while omitting the one title you wanted. Fix this by checking the official list title by title before comparing prices or accessories.
Assuming “cartridge support” means every cartridge
Atari’s wording is “most” Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Fix the assumption by checking the exact game in the compatibility information and keeping the purchase receipt until you have tested it.

Expecting to install more Nintendo games
There is no supported download or external-storage route for the Classic Edition systems. If expansion is a requirement, do not choose one on the theory that a later update will add it.
Forgetting the Atari power adapter
The Atari package includes a USB-C cable, not the adapter. Add a compatible adapter before your first play session.
Overwriting a newer save
On Nintendo Classic Editions, Suspend Point behavior can overwrite newer in-game progress. Decide which save state is authoritative before resuming from a slot.
Planning two-player NES gaming with one controller
Nintendo UK identifies additional accessories as necessary for two-player NES play. Confirm the second-controller requirement before inviting someone to play.
Availability and value checks
The official feature pages establish what the consoles do, not a guaranteed current retail price or long-term stock situation. Atari’s product page describes Atari 2600+ as available now and links to regional Amazon listings for the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, but listing price, stock and condition can change. Nintendo Classic Edition availability can also vary because the systems are older products. Compare the complete package, not only the console shell: controllers, HDMI cable, power cable and adapter requirements affect the real cost.
For a used Nintendo system, ask whether the original controller and power cable are included and whether the console boots to its game menu. For Atari 2600+, confirm that the listing includes the advertised 10-in-1 cartridge and HDMI cable, then account for the separate USB-C adapter. These checks prevent a low headline price from becoming an incomplete setup.
Bottom line for a 1980s-game setup
Choose the NES Classic Edition when its 30-game NES list contains your priorities, choose the Super NES Classic Edition when its distinct SNES list is the better match, and choose Atari 2600+ when compatible Atari cartridges are the reason you want a modern HDMI console. The Nintendo systems are simple because their libraries are fixed; Atari is expandable through physical cartridges but requires compatibility checking and a separate USB-C power adapter. Let the games decide first, then verify HDMI, power, saves and controllers before purchasing.
