A Windows game, a DOS game and an adventure game supported by ScummVM need different solutions; no single compatibility checkbox repairs all three. Check for a title-specific update first, then use Windows troubleshooting for a Windows executable, DOSBox for a DOS title, or ScummVM only when the game appears on its supported list.
Identify the game before changing anything
Write down the exact title, release and patch level. A boxed disc, a later digital re-release and a patched executable can behave differently on the same version of Windows. Also record your Windows edition and version, how the game was installed, and the first visible symptom.

- Installation failure: the installer will not start, stops with an error or cannot write files.
- Launch failure: the game closes immediately, shows an error or never reaches its menu.
- Display failure: black screen, wrong colors, an unusable resolution, flickering, fullscreen problems or graphical artifacts.
- Performance failure: gameplay is extremely slow, too fast or unstable.
- Audio failure: missing music, effects or speech.
That classification determines the runtime and the next safe test. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance is aimed at older Windows applications; DOSBox recreates an MS-DOS-compatible environment; ScummVM works only with supported adventure games and the correct game data.

Do not use a DOS emulator for a native Windows game merely because the game is old, and do not assume that ScummVM accepts every adventure game. Confirm the exact title and release in the relevant project’s current documentation before copying files or changing settings.

Repair an older Windows game with low-risk steps
1. Look for a publisher update
Search the publisher’s support page for a patch, compatibility note or newer re-release that matches your edition. Microsoft recommends checking for an update before running its troubleshooter. A patch may address a known installer, rendering or operating-system dependency that a generic setting cannot.
2. Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 interfaces, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Select Run, choose the affected game or browse to its executable, and follow the suggested tests. Apply a setting only after the game behaves better in the test run, then launch it normally to confirm the result.
Windows compatibility diagnostics can target particular legacy behaviors, including color modes, DirectX version detection and display drawing. Those options are symptom-specific; they are not a universal repair switch. If one test changes nothing, undo it and try the next supported option rather than stacking every checkbox.
3. Update device drivers when the game launches with glitches
If the game opens but has minor rendering or input glitches, use Windows Update to check available device-driver updates. Restart after an update and retest the same scene. Keep a note of the original behavior so you can tell whether the driver change helped.
4. Test the executable’s compatibility settings carefully
You can test settings on the game’s executable through its Windows file properties, but treat them as experiments tied to that title. Community compatibility indexes note that compatibility mode does not solve missing DLL errors or incorrect colors. If an error names a missing library, do not download a random DLL from a third-party site: the cited guidance does not endorse that practice, and an incompatible file can introduce crashes or security risk. Prefer the publisher’s patch, the game’s documented runtime or a supported re-release.

5. Separate installation errors from runtime errors
An installer that will not run is a different case from a game that installs but crashes. Preserve the original files, install to a folder you can write to, and capture the exact error text. Avoid deleting configuration files until you know where the game stores them; some older titles keep settings beside the executable, while others use a user profile directory. A clean reinstall can be useful only after you have identified the release and backed up saves.
Use DOSBox for DOS games
DOSBox is an emulator that recreates an MS-DOS-compatible environment, including sound, input and graphics. It lets many classic DOS games run without modifying their original files. Use a maintained DOSBox release and consult its current project documentation; an old setup example or version number should not be treated as a current recommendation.
Prepare a simple game folder
Create a dedicated folder for the game and copy the original DOS files into it. Keep the folder name short and simple while troubleshooting. Identify the launcher documented by the game: it may be an .EXE, .BAT or .COM file. Do not guess between several launchers if the manual or release notes specify one.
Mount the folder and launch the game
- Start DOSBox.
- Mount the host folder as a DOS drive, replacing the example path with your own folder path:
mount c C:GamesMyTitle - Switch to the mounted drive:
c: - Change to the game directory if the mount points to a parent folder:
cd MYTITLE - Start the documented program, for example:
GAME.EXE
or the specified.BATor.COMfile.
Use the game’s own readme or manual for required startup switches. A title may need a particular sound-card, memory or video setting, and DOSBox’s controls can differ by release.
Check file permissions when launching or saving fails
DOSBox documentation warns that read-only files can cause launch, configuration or save problems. Check the game folder and remove read-only status from files that the game must update, while keeping a backup of the untouched original. If the game still cannot save, verify that the mounted folder is writable in Windows and that you are not mounting a location protected by your account or security software.

Handle speed problems as an emulation issue
Very slow or very fast gameplay is not the same as a Windows compatibility-mode problem. DOSBox provides emulation-performance controls, but its guide notes that some games will not run smoothly. Change one performance setting at a time, test a repeatable section of gameplay and record the value that worked. A setting that helps one title can make another unstable, so do not copy a generic speed value across games.

Use ScummVM only for supported adventure games
ScummVM is a separate runtime for adventure games on its compatibility list. First confirm the exact title, edition and version in the current list, then read that title’s compatibility notes. Support is not implied merely because a game is an adventure game or because it ran on an older computer.
Provide the required data files
ScummVM needs the game’s data files. Its FAQ explains that the original setup executable is generally not the data ScummVM needs. Copy the files from your legitimate disc or digital installation according to the title’s instructions, add the folder in ScummVM and select the detected game profile. Keep the original media or installation available if the compatibility notes identify edition-specific files.
Investigate missing sound
Sound support can differ by game. Check the title’s ScummVM notes for supported music, effects and speech formats before changing global audio options. If the notes identify a required setting, apply it to that game profile rather than altering every profile.
Investigate crashes with reproducible details
For a crash, note the ScummVM version, the game’s exact release, operating system, selected game profile and the action that triggers the failure. Check known issues in the current documentation. If you report a reproducible problem, include those details and the smallest repeatable sequence; “it crashes” is not enough to distinguish a data-file problem from a platform-specific bug.

Diagnose display problems by their symptom
Black screens, wrong colors, scaling defects, fullscreen transitions and artifacts have different causes. Test them separately instead of enabling every display option.
Black screen or failed fullscreen switch
Determine whether audio continues and whether the game works in a window. A working window with a black fullscreen view points toward display-mode handling rather than a failed launch. Use the game’s documented windowed option or the Windows compatibility tests for legacy display behavior, then retest at the game’s native resolution before adding scaling.
Incorrect colors
Older games may depend on legacy 8-bit or 16-bit color behavior. Microsoft documents compatibility fixes for legacy color modes and drawing. Apply the color-related test only to the affected executable. Compatibility mode is not a guaranteed color correction, and PCGamingWiki’s compatibility guidance specifically notes that it does not solve incorrect colors in every game.
Scaling and unreadable resolutions
Record the resolution the game expects and the resolution your display uses. Try the game’s own windowed or scaling options first. If the image is stretched, cropped or surrounded by borders, change one scaling layer at a time—game setting, emulator setting or Windows display setting—so you can identify which layer introduces the defect.

Artifacts and drawing glitches
Update device drivers through Windows Update when the game launches with glitches. Then test the Windows compatibility option associated with legacy display drawing. If artifacts occur only in one scene or after a particular transition, capture that behavior and search the title-specific compatibility notes rather than assuming the graphics hardware is defective.

Windows 11 windowed-game optimization
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games, but the feature is specifically for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes. It is not a general switch for every old game. To change it for one application, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game in the app list (or browse to its executable), open its options and change the per-game optimization setting. Test with the setting on and off only when the title matches those DirectX and display-mode conditions.
When sound is missing
First identify the runtime. A DOS game should be checked against its DOSBox configuration and documented sound requirements; a ScummVM game should be checked against that title’s sound-support notes; a native Windows game may need its publisher patch or a driver update. Do not assume one audio setting fixes all older games.
- Confirm that Windows audio works in another application before changing the game.
- Use the title’s documented sound device or profile rather than selecting random hardware emulations.
- Change one setting, restart the game and test a known sound cue.
- If only music, only effects or only speech is missing, record that distinction; the required data or mode can differ.
The available DOSBox and ScummVM guidance does not establish a universal sound fix. A release-specific patch or game page may be required.

- Using one compatibility checkbox for every failure: install errors, missing DLLs, color problems and emulator issues are different classes of fault.
- Running every old game through the same runtime: DOSBox is for DOS software, while ScummVM is limited to supported adventure titles.
- Downloading DLLs from random sites: this is not endorsed by the cited compatibility guidance and can create version or security problems.
- Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify the change that helped and may create a new conflict.
- Assuming a current Windows 11 feature covers all legacy games: windowed-game optimization is limited to DirectX 10/11 titles in windowed or borderless modes.
- Buying hardware before testing software: no controller, cable, adapter or PC upgrade is established as a general fix for these compatibility classes.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Record the exact title, release, patch level, Windows version, installation source and symptom.
- Classify the game as a native Windows title, DOS title or ScummVM-supported adventure.
- Check the publisher or project documentation for a release-specific update or compatibility note.
- For a Windows game, run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- For a DOS game, mount its folder in DOSBox, change to the correct directory and run the documented launcher.
- For a ScummVM title, verify support and provide the required data files, not merely the setup executable.
- Address the exact display symptom and test Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only when its DirectX 10/11 conditions apply.
- Change one setting at a time, retest a repeatable action and keep a record of the result.
- If the issue remains, consult the title’s release-specific notes with your recorded version and symptom; avoid unsupported hardware purchases or random downloads.
What a successful fix looks like
A reliable repair is reproducible: the game starts from the documented launcher, displays the expected colors and resolution, runs at a stable speed, produces the supported audio and preserves saves after restarting. Keep the working configuration and the original game files separate so a future patch or Windows update can be tested without losing the known-good setup.
