If you’re new to Soulslikes, there isn’t one universally easiest game to start with. Choose by what makes you want to play: Elden Ring for open exploration and flexible approaches to obstacles, Another Crab’s Treasure for an explicit newcomer-friendly pitch, Dark Souls III for a more directed series entry, or Lies of P for its Pinocchio-inspired world and weapon experimentation. These are preference matches, not a tested difficulty ranking.
What should you play first if you’re new to Souls games?
Start with the option whose setting and structure appeal to you. Soulslike combat asks you to pay attention to enemy behavior, timing, and evasion; no choice here removes that learning curve. The games differ in how they invite you to approach it.

- Choose Elden Ring if you want to roam, explore, and try different approaches when a challenge stops you. PlayStation emphasizes freedom in exploration and combat, while Bandai Namco describes assistance through in-game tools—not an options-menu difficulty setting. - Choose Another Crab’s Treasure if you like the idea of a Soulslike whose official description specifically addresses newer players. Nintendo calls it approachable for newcomers while also offering a challenge to experienced players; that is the game’s positioning, not an independently measured difficulty verdict. - Choose Dark Souls III if you want a more directed entry in the Dark Souls series and the appeal of shaping a distinct combat style. Bandai Namco also describes integrated online interactions on its Dark Souls III product page.
- Choose Lies of P if a Pinocchio-inspired story in a Belle Époque setting sounds compelling, and you want to experiment with weapon combinations, Legion Arms, and abilities. Those features describe its toolkit, not a beginner difficulty rating. See the official Lies of P page.
Is Elden Ring good for someone new to Souls games?
It may suit you if having room to explore and more than one way to approach a challenge is important. Its flexible structure does not mean it has an easy mode: Bandai Namco says there is no difficulty setting in the options menu. The assistance it describes comes through tools in the game. PlayStation likewise presents exploration and combat as areas where players have freedom.

That makes “flexible” a more accurate recommendation than “easy.” If you would rather be guided through a more focused series entry than roam and choose your route, Dark Souls III may fit your preference better.

What does a Soulslike’s learning curve ask of you?
Expect to learn fights by watching what enemies do and adjusting your timing. Bandai Namco identifies precise timing and evasion as key Souls-series skills, and recommends learning from enemies and the environment. Its discussion of Elden Ring and the Souls series also describes exploration and cooperation as parts of the challenge.
When you fail, treat the attempt as information: notice which attack caught you, whether you evaded too early or too late, and what changed when you repositioned. Then change one tactic at a time. If you are stuck, explore another route or make use of the tools the game provides rather than assuming you must win the same encounter with the same approach.
