Choose a Soulslike by the kind of challenge you want, not by a universal easiest-to-hardest ranking: the available evidence does not establish one. If you want room to explore, experiment with weapons or magic, and change tactics when stuck, Elden Ring is a strong first pick—but flexibility does not make it easy. For a focused shinobi adventure built around stealth and direct combat, consider Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. For a single-player adventure centered on weapon combinations and mechanical arms, consider Lies of P.
Which Soulslike should you play first?
Start with the game whose approach to challenge sounds rewarding to you. Soulslikes ask players to study encounters and learn from mistakes; in a PlayStation Blog interview, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki put the intent this way: “We want players to use their cunning, study the game, memorize what’s happening, and learn from their mistakes.” Read the interview.
That does not translate into a single difficulty number. The official descriptions available for these games explain their mechanics and settings, but do not provide a controlled comparison of completion difficulty, accessibility, required skill, or time to finish. Think instead about what you want to do when a fight is going badly: leave and explore, try a different build, or master a more focused combat system.
Compare the games by the kind of challenge you want
| Game | Recovery when stuck | Combat and approach | Setting and structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | Its expansive world gives you room to explore and approach combat in different ways, according to the PlayStation game page. | Weapons, magical abilities, and skills support experimentation with different play styles. | Expansive fantasy world. |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | The official feature description emphasizes a focused shinobi adventure; it does not establish comparative difficulty or how often players can leave a difficult encounter. | Stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools, ninja abilities, and direct combat. | Late 1500s Sengoku Japan. |
| Lies of P | The official FAQ does not establish a comparative difficulty level or a recovery path when stuck. | Weapon combinations and Legion Arms in a single-player game. | A Pinocchio reimagining in a Belle Époque-inspired world. |
Descriptions of mechanics are not difficulty ratings. A player who enjoys direct, demanding combat may prefer a more focused structure; someone who likes changing equipment and exploring alternatives may prefer a game that offers more ways to approach a problem.

Choose by your play style
Choose Elden Ring for exploration and experimentation
Pick Elden Ring if you want a broad fantasy world, freedom to explore, and options to adjust your approach with weapons, magic, and skills. PlayStation’s editorial team describes it as offering “a new degree of freedom” and calls it “perhaps the most accessible ‘Soulslike’ for newcomers to the genre in years.” That is an editorial characterization, not a measured finding that it is objectively easiest.
For a newcomer who wants several possible responses to a difficult encounter, that flexibility makes Elden Ring a defensible first recommendation. It still asks you to learn encounters; having more options should not be confused with an easy mode.

Choose Sekiro for a focused shinobi adventure
Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools, ninja abilities, and head-to-head combat appeal more than a broad selection of builds. Its official description sets the adventure in late 1500s Sengoku Japan. The game’s official site describes its features, but does not rank its difficulty against other Soulslikes.
Choose Lies of P for weapon combinations and a Pinocchio reimagining
Pick Lies of P if its Belle Époque-inspired world and Pinocchio premise appeal, and you want a single-player Soulslike featuring weapon combinations and Legion Arms. Its official FAQ lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Mac, Steam, and Epic Games Store. See the announcement.
For the United States, the PlayStation listing offers a PS4/PS5 Standard Edition, says PS4 purchasers can upgrade to PS5, and notes that a physical disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive. Confirm the current listing for your region and console format before purchasing.
