Choose by the experience you want to play, not by the label on the box: compare what you do minute to minute, how much choices affect the story, how demanding the action is, and whether the game fits your accessibility, tone, platform, and solo or co-op needs. “Story-driven action-adventure” can describe very different play styles.
Start with the moment-to-moment play
Ask what you will actually spend time doing. One game may center on exploration and combat; another may put more weight on dialogue and investigation; a horror game may use stealth and improvised weapons to keep you under pressure. Marketing labels alone do not tell you how those activities are balanced.
| Example | What the official description emphasizes | Best used to illustrate |
|---|---|---|
| Dustborn | Quantic Dream describes it as a single-player, story-driven action-adventure. | A game explicitly marketed with the story-driven action-adventure label. The description is the publisher’s characterization, not a measure of how much story or action it contains. |
| The Last of Us Part I | PlayStation describes Joel and Ellie’s story alongside exploration and combat. | A narrative journey paired with direct action. |
| Life is Strange: Reunion | The ESRB description highlights investigation, puzzles, and dialogue and action choices. | A story-focused adventure for players drawn to investigation and decisions. |
| TUNIC | The ESRB describes overhead exploration, collecting manual pages, and combat with weapons and magic. | A more exploration- and combat-forward action-adventure; its description does not establish story depth. |
| Directive 8020 | The official page describes cinematic sci-fi horror with stealth, improvised weapons, and survival play. | A narrative-heavy game that also puts the player under real-time threat. |

Decide how much agency you want
Some games present a largely directed journey; others foreground decisions that can alter events or endings. Look for descriptions of what choices affect rather than assuming that a branching-story claim guarantees every decision feels consequential.

Match challenge and controls to the player
Consider the kind of challenge involved: combat, stealth, puzzles, timed inputs, or reacting under pressure. Difficulty settings can help with some barriers, but they are not a substitute for checking the exact controls and accessibility options you need.
Compare feature lists for subtitle readability and scope, control remapping, rapid or simultaneous button presses, difficulty adjustments, pause behavior, screen-reader support, and narration and language options. For example, PlayStation lists fully customizable controls, advanced subtitles, and options to avoid rapid or simultaneous button presses for the PS5 version of Until Dawn. Supermassive lists basic subtitles, adjustable difficulty, and offline pausing for Directive 8020. Features can differ by game, platform, or version, so verify the relevant store or support page.

Use these as prompts for checking a game’s options, not as a guarantee that any particular title implements them.

Check tone and content information
Story-led games range from investigation and drama to horror and survival. If you are choosing for yourself, a family member, or a group, consider whether the tone and intensity fit the player rather than treating all narrative adventures as interchangeable.
In the United States, the ESRB rates Life is Strange: Reunion M for Mature 17+, with Mild Violence, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Drugs. Ratings and descriptors vary by jurisdiction. Dustborn’s publisher lists separate regional ratings, so consult the rating applicable to your location instead of assuming the US classification applies everywhere.

Confirm platform, edition, and availability
Check the exact platform and edition before buying; a title’s name alone does not establish that a particular version is available where you play. PlayStation lists The Last of Us Part I for PS5 and PC and identifies a PS5 Standard Edition as well as a Blu-ray disc edition. Those listings are examples, not confirmation of current local stock or availability. Dustborn’s publisher lists PC storefronts, PS4 and PS5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series platforms. Verify the relevant store listing for current regional availability and edition details.

Choose solo or co-op deliberately
A narrative game may support more than one way to play, but “co-op” does not by itself explain how a group participates. PlayStation says Directive 8020 can be played alone or with friends, with up to five additional players able to join the mission. Check the local or multiplayer mode details to learn what each person controls and how group decisions work before choosing it for a group.
