Neither label tells you everything about what a particular game adds: check its listing for the content, price, membership terms, and console requirements.
What is a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack?
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. The pack enhances a selected game for Nintendo Switch 2, potentially adding visual improvements, features, or modes; exactly what it includes varies by title. Nintendo’s upgrade instructions explain the format and note that it is available only for select games.
If you already own the original game, physically or digitally, you can acquire its upgrade pack separately. If you are buying the game for the first time, a Switch 2 Edition bundle is another option. The Switch 2 Edition features themselves are playable only on Nintendo Switch 2; the original Switch game remains playable on Switch. Check that a listing is for the full game or only the upgrade pack before buying.
How is a free game update different?
Nintendo describes free updates for selected Switch games as a separate option from Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Updates may improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare, but their contents differ by game. Nintendo does not state a universal ownership rule for all such updates, so check the individual game’s listing and requirements. Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide explains that update contents vary.

A free update is not automatically a Switch 2 Edition: the update’s features and supported hardware depend on the particular game. Likewise, “upgrade pack” does not automatically mean paid. Some upgrade packs cost money, while others are free or available at no additional charge under specified membership terms.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Nintendo Support lists the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at $9.99 USD through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store, or at no additional charge for active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. That is the US listing’s price and membership condition for this title, not a universal upgrade-pack price. Nintendo lists smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, two manual save files, and the ZELDA NOTES service among the Switch 2 Edition features. The physical Switch 2 Edition listing is a full-game route; existing owners can compare it with the separate upgrade pack described by Nintendo Support.

Subnautica
Nintendo’s Subnautica Switch 2 Edition upgrade-pack listing calls the pack free for people who already own Subnautica on Switch. It lists up to 1440p at 60 fps docked with a compatible TV, up to 1080p at 60 fps handheld, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Those specifications apply to this game’s listing; they should not be assumed for other upgrade packs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what to download or buy
- Check the exact game. Look for a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade-pack listing and read which improvements or features it includes.
- Confirm what you own. An upgrade pack requires the original full game. If you do not own it, check whether the listing is a full-game Switch 2 Edition bundle instead.
- Check the price and eligibility. Confirm the current price in your region and whether any no-additional-charge offer depends on an active membership.
- Verify the console requirement. Switch 2 Edition features require Switch 2. For a free update, check the game’s listing for the supported hardware and features.
For any game beyond these examples, Nintendo’s general guidance is that upgrade-pack features and free-update contents vary by title. A game’s current listing is the reliable place to verify what you will receive.
