For handheld play, use the Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to the console. For docked TV or tabletop play, the Joy-Con 2 pair can work, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is Nintendo’s dedicated separate pad. If you already own original Switch controllers, they can pair wirelessly with Switch 2—but original Joy-Con cannot attach to it.

When are Joy-Con 2 enough?
Joy-Con 2 are the straightforward choice when the console is primarily used handheld, since they attach directly to it. They also cover tabletop and TV play when you are happy using the detached controllers and the game supports the desired orientation.

- Motion and vibration: Nintendo lists motion controls and HD rumble.
- Battery and charging: Nintendo states up to 20 hours of continuous use, depending on software and controller activity, and approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge. These are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee for every game or use pattern.

When does the Switch 2 Pro Controller make sense?
Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller when you want a separate controller for docked TV or tabletop play. Nintendo says it can connect wirelessly or by connecting to the dock; using it does not require detaching the Joy-Con 2. It is a Switch 2-only controller.
Its Switch 2-specific additions include a C Button that opens the GameChat menu, GL and GR buttons that can be freely mapped to other buttons, and an audio jack for headphones or headsets. Can you use original Switch controllers on Switch 2?
Nintendo lists the original Switch Joy-Con and original Switch Pro Controller as wirelessly compatible with Switch 2. That makes them possible options for supported wireless play, but it does not make them interchangeable with the new generation’s attached handheld setup: original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console.
Compatibility statements apply to the specific controllers listed; they should not be assumed to cover every older accessory or every game feature. In particular, Nintendo says the original Joy-Con Charging Grip is not compatible with Joy-Con 2. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance and its accessory compatibility information before reusing older charging equipment.

What about third-party controllers?
A third-party pad may be worth considering if its documented features match your setup, but compatibility is model-specific. Before buying, confirm with the manufacturer that the exact model supports the connection method and features you need:
- Wireless or wired connection with Switch 2
- Motion controls, if a game requires them
- NFC or amiibo support, if needed
- Console wake behavior and vibration
- Game-specific inputs, including any specialized controls you expect to use
Do not infer support for these features from a general claim that a controller works with Switch 2.

How many controllers can connect?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can generally be paired, though the practical maximum depends on controller type and features. That is a system-level ceiling, not a promise that every combination will work in every game. Nintendo’s controller-pairing guidance provides the qualification.
