Choose a turn-based RPG by identifying the activity you want to think about most. If you want initiative, positioning, environmental opportunities and consequential party decisions, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the stronger fit among the supported examples. If you want classic menu commands, vocation-based party building, a clear heroic quest and a limited recruitable-monster feature, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the closer match.
“Turn-based” describes when actions resolve, not how a battle feels. The two games below show the difference clearly. Treat them as useful reference points rather than a complete ranking of every turn-based or creature-collection RPG, and confirm your local platform, edition, content rating and storefront listing before buying.

Turn-based is a combat schedule, not a complete genre description
In any turn-based system, the game pauses or advances in discrete turns so you can choose actions before the next exchange resolves. Beyond that shared structure, the decisions can be very different.
Nintendo describes Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake as using “classic turn-based gameplay.” Its battles center on selecting commands for a party, exploiting enemy weaknesses and using each ally’s skills. This is the familiar menu-command model: your main question is usually which ability, target or defensive option produces the best result this round.

Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as team-based, D&D 5e-inspired combat with initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, environmental interactions and an advanced AI. Position, timing, terrain and the order in which your party acts can matter as much as the action selected from a menu. Larian says the system rewards “strategy and foresight.”
Use that distinction as your first filter. Someone searching for a “turn-based RPG” may be seeking a relaxed command loop, a tactical tabletop-style encounter, or something in between. The label alone cannot answer that question.
First decide what you want to do during combat
Choose tactical party encounters when every turn should create a problem
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the more direct fit if you want battles that ask you to coordinate a team. Team-based initiative determines when characters act. Advantage and disadvantage alter the odds of a roll. Environmental interactions can turn the battlefield itself into a tool or hazard, while modifiers and class abilities create additional layers of planning.

That structure suits players who enjoy questions such as:
- Should a character spend a turn helping an ally, attacking, controlling an enemy or changing position?
- Is it better to take a reliable action now or prepare a stronger setup for the next round?
- Can the party use height, hazards, objects or the environment to change an otherwise even fight?
- Which companion should act first so the next character can exploit the opening?
Larian also explains that the game remains deliberately turn-based so a group can discuss moves and experience an authentic D&D-style rhythm. Its statement that combat is faster than Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a developer comparison, not an independent performance test; use it as a description of design intent rather than a measured speed claim. Choose classic command battles when party choices should stay readable
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the clearer match if you prefer selecting commands for a conventional role-playing party and learning which enemies are vulnerable to which attacks. Nintendo’s description emphasizes allies’ unique skills and enemy weaknesses, so the tactical question is often about composition, resource use and matching an ability to a target rather than manipulating a three-dimensional battlefield.

This approach can be appealing when you want:
- A straightforward sequence of choose-command, resolve-turn and adjust-for-the-next-round.
- Party roles that are easy to understand at a glance.
- Enemy weakness discovery as a central source of combat knowledge.
- Less emphasis on positioning and more emphasis on preparation, skill selection and party balance.
Neither structure is automatically deeper or better. They ask for different kinds of attention. Tactical encounters reward spatial and sequential planning; classic command encounters reward recognizing patterns, managing abilities and building a dependable party.

Then define what “collection” means to you
Creature collection can describe several different activities. A game might let you recruit many monsters, customize a conventional party, develop a small cast of named companions, or combine all three. Decide whether you want to fill a roster of creatures, optimize jobs and classes, or deepen relationships with a limited group.
Recruitable monsters and vocations in Dragon Quest III
Nintendo confirms that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake includes friendly monsters that can be recruited and Monster Arena tournaments. It also lets you choose party companions by vocation. Those systems give you two kinds of customization: you can shape the party’s jobs and pursue optional monster-related activities.
The documented feature is narrower than a full creature-collector structure. The official description establishes recruitable friendly monsters and arena tournaments, but it does not establish a complete monster-collection loop with a large catalogue, breeding system or creature-focused campaign. Buy it expecting a traditional role-playing party with monster recruitment as one component, not a dedicated creature-collection game.
Classes, races and Origin companions in Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 approaches collection through character construction and recruitment rather than a monster catalogue. Larian lists 12 classes, 11 races and 46 subclasses, along with seven Origin characters who have their own agendas and storylines. Those figures are publisher-provided feature counts from the official game page; they are not an independent measure of quality or variety.

Use story structure as a separate buying criterion
Choose consequence-driven character stories
Larian foregrounds player agency in Baldur’s Gate 3. Its official page says, “Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving its mark on the world.” The game presents an expansive narrative in which decisions affect your legacy, relationships and the direction of individual character arcs. The seven Origin characters provide prewritten perspectives and personal agendas that can intersect with your custom character’s path.
This design suits players who want to:
- Make decisions without knowing every downstream consequence.
- See relationships and personal storylines change through play.
- Role-play a character whose identity is expressed through dialogue and action choices.
- Replay encounters or campaigns to explore different outcomes.
The official description establishes a choice-shaped narrative, but it does not prove that every decision produces a radically different ending or that one route is objectively superior. Think of the appeal as meaningful participation in character and story direction.
Choose a clear inherited quest
Nintendo presents Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake around a direct premise: the child of the hero Ortega sets out to complete Ortega’s failed mission and defeat Baramos. The structure is a classic heroic journey with a defined antagonist and an understandable objective.

A straightforward premise is not a quality judgment. It simply signals a different relationship between player choice and narrative direction than Larian’s explicitly choice-driven approach.

Larian’s official feature list gives the scale of its character systems: seven Origin characters, 12 classes, 11 races, 46 subclasses, more than 600 spells and actions, and more than 174 hours of cinematics. These are publisher claims, and the accessed page does not state a publication year for those counts. They should help you understand the intended breadth of the systems, not serve as a comparative score.

For release context, Steam lists August 3, 2023, as the PC release date and identifies Larian Studios as developer and publisher. The Steam page’s review percentages and counts change over time, so they are not used here as a permanent quality measurement.

- Match the game to your hardware. PlayStation’s US page lists Baldur’s Gate 3 for PS5, while Steam identifies the PC storefront release. Nintendo’s US page lists Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for Switch and states Switch 2 support. Storefronts and editions can vary by region.
- Confirm the exact edition. Larian’s official purchase information lists Standard, Digital Deluxe and Physical Deluxe Edition options for Baldur’s Gate 3. That establishes that a physical deluxe product exists, but it does not establish current stock, seller, price or geographic availability. Check the retailer serving your country.
- Verify whether the listing is digital or physical. Nintendo’s cited US page displays a digital edition for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. A separate retailer listing is needed to establish a physical copy.
- Read the local content rating. The US PlayStation listing for Baldur’s Gate 3 identifies violence, nudity and strong sexual content. Ratings and descriptors can differ by territory, so use the platform page for your region.
- Check multiplayer requirements. Larian states online multiplayer for up to four players in Baldur’s Gate 3; Nintendo lists Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake as a one-player game on one system. Confirm any subscription or network requirements shown by your store.
