The best World of Warcraft server is the one that matches your game version, the people you want to play with, your preferred ruleset and your region—not necessarily the realm with the biggest population label. Decide whether you are returning to modern World of Warcraft or a Classic version first. Then check your friends’ or guild’s exact region and realm, choose Normal or RP rules that fit your play style, and verify the live realm list before creating a character.
That order matters because realm boundaries do not work identically across versions. Blizzard’s returning-player guidance says Classic characters can group only with characters on the same realm, while modern WoW has gained cross-realm features that can reduce—but not eliminate—the importance of the realm you choose.

1. Identify which World of Warcraft version you are returning to
“Which server should I pick?” has no useful answer until you know whether you mean modern World of Warcraft or a particular Classic release. The launcher and character-creation screen separate these versions, and the social rules can differ substantially.
Modern World of Warcraft
Modern WoW has progressively added cross-realm systems. Blizzard described cross-realm guild invitations in its announcement for The War Within and Season 1, allowing guild recruitment to reach beyond a single realm in the circumstances covered by that announcement. Because that statement is tied to a specific expansion and season, do not treat it as a permanent promise that every activity is cross-realm. World of Warcraft Classic
Classic requires more careful realm matching. Blizzard’s returning-player guide tells players to confirm the realm their friends use, and its starter guide states: “Make sure you pick the same one your friends play on—in World of Warcraft Classic, characters can only group with others on the same realm!” Blizzard Entertainment’s New Players Starter Guide gives that instruction directly.
Before making a Classic character, ask each friend or guild officer for four details: the Classic version, region, realm name and faction or community arrangement they use. A similar-looking realm in another Classic release is not a substitute. If you choose the wrong realm, your character may not be able to group with the people you intended to join.
Use this version check before comparing realms

2. Start with the people you want to play with
A friend group or guild is a stronger reason to choose a realm than an old population ranking. Ask the players you want to join where they actually play now, not where they played years ago. Record the precise spelling of the realm and the version attached to it.

If friends already play
- Ask for the game version and release or season.
- Confirm the region and realm name from a current character or guild screen.
- For Classic, create your character on that same realm before leveling.
- For modern WoW, test the current group, guild and community tools with one friend rather than assuming every feature works across realms.
If your friends are split between realms, identify the group you will actually play with most often. A realm that connects you to an active weekly group is usually more useful than a theoretically busier realm where you know nobody.
If a guild is your social anchor
Blizzard’s returning-player guidance points players toward guild listings when they want like-minded people. Use the in-game listings and recruitment channels to find a guild whose language, schedule and activities fit your routine. Ask the recruiter which version, region and realm the guild uses, and whether its regular activities rely on same-realm characters.
For a modern guild, ask which cross-realm functions are currently available in your version. Blizzard’s cross-realm guild announcement is useful context, but it is not a current guarantee for every expansion, season or activity. For a Classic guild, treat the realm named by the guild as a requirement unless the guild explicitly explains a newer connection or grouping rule.
If you have no friends or guild yet
Choose a realm by the community you can realistically join. Look at current guild recruitment, language, play times and the activities you care about—raids, dungeons, player-versus-player play, role-play or a casual social guild. Population is only a screening clue; an active guild that plays when you are online is more valuable than a large but incompatible label.

3. Choose Normal or RP according to how you want to play
Realm type is a play-style decision, not a popularity contest.
Normal realms
Normal is the ordinary ruleset described in Blizzard’s starter guidance. Open-world player-versus-player combat is not automatically enabled for everyone; Blizzard describes War Mode as the opt-in route for open-world PvP on Normal realms. Choose Normal if you want the standard questing and social environment and prefer to decide when to enable that PvP mode.
RP realms
Blizzard describes RP realms as intended for players who want to role-play. They use the Normal ruleset and do not have open-world PvP. Choose RP because you want to participate in a role-playing community and respect its conventions, not because the realm name looks distinctive. Read guild descriptions and community expectations before transferring an established character or joining events.
Do not confuse realm type with War Mode
RP and Normal describe the realm’s social ruleset; War Mode is an opt-in setting described by Blizzard for open-world PvP on Normal realms. If you want occasional PvP while keeping the standard realm environment, Normal plus the in-game War Mode choice is the relevant path. If you want role-play, select an RP realm and follow its community norms.

4. Treat population labels as clues, not measurements
Returning players often search for the “highest-population” realm. That can be a useful first filter, but it cannot by itself tell you whether a realm is right for your character. Blizzard has cautioned that population-tracking websites rely on public data and may not present a clear picture of actual population. Their rankings can vary by region, faction, game version, sampling method and date.
Do not quote an old ranking as a current fact. Instead, use three live checks:

- Look at the realm list available to your account and version.
- Read current guild recruitment and note whether the schedules match yours.
- Ask friends, guild officers or community members where they are active now.
Blizzard’s Connected Realms update is explicit that third-party population figures are estimates. Use them only as a starting clue, then validate the result in game. No authoritative, current realm-by-realm population table is established here, so a “best realm” list would give you false precision.

A larger label may suggest a broader pool of potential players, but it does not establish that your preferred language, activity or schedule is represented. It also does not prove that every activity is available to your character or version. Check the current social tools instead of assuming that a historical ranking still describes the realm.
Why a smaller realm may still work
Blizzard introduced Connected Realms to give lower-population realms more opportunities to group, compete and connect. The original feature preview described the goal as: “Our goal is to give players on lower-population realms more opportunities to group up, compete, and connect with other players to take on Azeroth’s bigger challenges.” That statement explains the feature’s purpose in 2013; it is not a present-day population assessment. Connected Realms can make some community and activity features available across linked realms, but the exact behavior depends on the game version and current implementation. Confirm what is linked in the current realm and guild interfaces before relying on it for a Classic or modern character.
5. Check region, language and schedule before committing
Realm choice is regional and time-sensitive. Select the region in which you and your intended group actually play, then look for a language and schedule that fit your normal hours. A realm with a strong community in another region may be a poor match if its peak activity occurs while you are asleep.

Ask a prospective guild:
- What language is used in voice and text chat?
- What time zone and start times govern regular events?
- Which activities are central: progression, casual groups, PvP, role-play or social chat?
- Which version and realm do the regular members use?
These questions produce more actionable information than a single population number. They also reveal whether the guild’s expectations match a returning player who may need time to relearn class, profession and encounter systems.
6. Verify live realm availability before creating the character
Realm status can change. Character-creation restrictions, transfer availability and the realms shown for a particular version are not safely inferred from an old article or forum post. Open the current realm list for your region and game version immediately before you commit.

- Launch the correct World of Warcraft version.
- Open the character-creation or realm-selection screen.
- Confirm the region and inspect the realms currently offered to your account.
- Compare the displayed realm with the one supplied by your friends or guild.
- If the realm is unavailable, ask the group whether it has a connected realm, an alternate guild realm or a current recruitment plan.
- Only then create the character or consider a transfer.
The available sources do not establish a current authoritative list of every realm’s status, so this live check is essential. Do not assume that a realm shown in a historical guide is open for new characters today.
7. A practical decision framework
Use the following order when several realms appear plausible:

This order prevents a common mistake: selecting a highly ranked realm first and discovering afterward that your friends are on another version, your guild’s schedule is incompatible or Classic grouping requires a different realm.

You are returning to Classic to play with two old friends
Ask for the exact Classic release, region and realm. Create on that same realm because Blizzard’s guide says Classic characters can group only with others on the same realm. Ignore broad population lists until the social match is confirmed. If the realm is not available for new characters, pause and ask your friends whether they have moved or whether the group is using another current realm.
You are returning to modern WoW without a guild
Start with the current realm list in your region, then inspect guild listings for language, activity and schedule. Modern cross-realm systems may reduce the cost of choosing a different realm, but Blizzard’s cited cross-realm guild information is tied to The War Within and Season 1. Verify the current guild and group rules in your version before treating the realm boundary as unimportant.
You want role-play and occasional PvP
Choose an RP realm because role-play is your primary community preference. Blizzard describes RP realms as using the Normal ruleset without open-world PvP. If you instead want the standard realm environment with optional open-world PvP, choose Normal and use the current War Mode setting described in the starter guide.

Ask which realm actually contains the group you will join, then verify its region and version. Compare current guild recruitment and play times. If no social anchor wins, choose the realm whose live community evidence matches your language and schedule; do not present a historical ranking as a definitive answer.

9. Common mistakes and how to recover
Choosing by name recognition alone
A familiar realm name does not prove that it is active for your version or suitable for your region. Recheck the live realm list and current guild activity.
Assuming all modern features are cross-realm
Cross-realm guild announcements do not establish that every dungeon, raid, guild function or Classic mode works identically. Test the specific activity you care about and read the current in-game description.
Using a third-party ranking as an official count
Blizzard says population websites use public data and may not accurately represent actual population. Record the publisher, method, region and date if you consult one, and treat the result as an estimate.

Forgetting the region or release
Two realms can have similar names while belonging to different regions or game versions. Confirm all four identifiers—version, release or season, region and realm—before creating a character.
Discovering the guild’s schedule does not fit
Contact the guild before committing. A smaller but compatible community is more useful than a larger one that is inactive during your play hours. If you already created a character, ask the guild whether a current connected-realm or cross-realm option applies to your version before paying for any transfer.

- I know whether I am playing modern WoW or a Classic version.
- I have the exact release or season, region and realm from my friends or guild.
- I understand that Classic same-realm grouping is a decisive constraint.
- I chose Normal or RP for the community and ruleset I want.
- I know whether War Mode is relevant to my Normal-realm plan.
- I checked current guild activity, language and event times.
- I used population information only as a dated estimate, not an official count.
- I verified the live realm and character-creation screens immediately before starting.
If you can check every item, you are choosing a server for the way you will actually play—not for a stale ranking or a memorable name.
