Choose the exact Jackbox game first, then open its settings or lobby menu before anyone joins. Turn on Family-Friendly when the title offers it, set Profanity Filter to Strict if you need player answers containing profanity rejected, and enable Moderation when a trusted person can review submissions. These controls address different risks: Family-Friendly changes suggestive game-provided content, profanity filtering screens user-created answers, and moderation adds human approval. None of them changes a title’s basic premise or guarantees that every submission will suit every player.
Start with the exact game, not just the party pack
Jackbox menus and safeguards vary by title. Identify the game and pack you will launch, then check Jackbox Games’ current Family-Friendly Filter list and moderation-support list for that specific title. The Family-Friendly list was updated October 14, 2025, and the moderation documentation was updated October 21, 2025; a later release or update can change availability.

Recent titles commonly expose content controls in the pre-game settings or lobby. Party Pack 11’s streaming guide calls this area Content Control. Open it before starting the room so you can see which toggles actually exist instead of assuming that every Jackbox game has the same options.

Jackbox describes this option as removing suggestive in-game content. That can make prompts, examples, or other material supplied by the title more appropriate for a mixed-age group. It does not mean that a player can never type something crude or offensive into a response field. Treat it as a change to the game’s own content, not as a complete answer-screening system.

Profanity Filter: player answers
Jackbox’s family guidance says that turning on profanity filtering and setting it to Strict will reject answers containing profanity. Its streaming guidance likewise describes profanity filtering as applying to user-generated content. Use Strict when rejecting profanity is an explicit requirement, but do not describe it as protection against every form of harmful language or every upsetting idea.
Moderation: a person approves submissions
When a supported game has Moderation enabled, it generates a password for the moderator. The moderator opens mod.jackbox.tv, enters that password, and reviews user-created content before it is shown on screen. Depending on the title, rejected material is replaced with game-provided content or appears as no answer.
Moderation only works when a real person is available to monitor the queue. Keep the generated password private, especially during a livestream. If no trusted moderator can watch continuously, use the other controls and choose a title whose premise and prompts already fit the group.
How to set up a private family or mixed-age game
- Choose for premise first. Decide whether the game’s subject matter, humor, and stakes are comfortable for the youngest or most sensitive participant. A filter cannot remove a murder theme or rewrite an adult premise.
- Launch the exact title and open its settings. Look in the lobby or Content Control section before creating the room.
- Enable Family-Friendly if it is listed. This reduces suggestive game-provided prompts and content.
- Set Profanity Filter to Strict when needed. This targets profanity in player answers and can reject those answers.
- Enable Moderation if supported and practical. Give the generated password to a trusted adult who can open
mod.jackbox.tvand approve or reject submissions. - Tell players what will happen. Explain that rejected answers may be replaced or shown as no answer, and that the host can remove disruptive participants.
- Start only after checking the live controls. If a required setting is missing, stop and select another title rather than promising protection the game does not provide.
Which Jackbox titles have the Family-Friendly Filter?
Most Jackbox games have the filter, but not all. Jackbox gives three reasons a title might not show one: it predates the feature, its premise is inherently family-unfriendly, or it has no game-provided content the publisher considers offensive to most families. Verify the title in the current official list instead of relying on a pack-wide assumption.

How moderation works, step by step
- Turn Moderation on in the game’s settings. Do this before creating the room; in supported games, moderators can then join during gameplay.
- Record the generated password. It is separate from the room code and should be shared only with the person moderating.
- Open
mod.jackbox.tvin a browser. Enter the password and keep the moderation page visible while players submit content. - Review each item. Approve content that fits your stated rules and reject content that does not.
- Understand the fallback. A rejected response may be replaced by game-provided content or become no answer, depending on the game.
Jackbox lists moderation support across selected games in Party Packs 7 through 11, The Party Starter, The Jackbox Naughty Pack, and the four Survey Scramble modes: HILO, Speed, Squares, and Bounce. Check the support list for the exact title. The Poll Mine has no user-entered content according to Jackbox’s article, so its moderation question is different from that of answer-writing games.
The Wheel of Enormous Proportions exception
For The Wheel of Enormous Proportions, Jackbox documents a specific Allow Player Written Responses toggle. Turning it off prevents players from writing questions and removes questions with typed answers; manual moderation is not required for that title’s documented workflow. Do not treat this special control as a general replacement for Moderation in other games.

Kicking a player in a public room
Selected newer releases allow the host to kick players. Kicking is room-specific, and Jackbox notes limits after a game is underway: a removed player may remain visible on screen while disconnected and unable to rejoin or submit new content. Use this as a response to a problem, not as your primary content-safety plan. Set expectations, restrict room access, and configure filters before the first prompt.
A title-by-title verification routine
Use the same short audit every time you switch games or install an update. First, write down the exact title and version, not only the pack number. Next, look up that title in Jackbox’s Family-Friendly Filter list. A missing entry can mean the game is inherently family-friendly, predates the feature, or has a premise the publisher does not consider suitable for filtering, so read the explanation rather than guessing.
Then check the separate moderation list. Family-Friendly availability does not imply that a moderator can join, and a game that accepts typed responses may still lack human review. Finally, identify whether players actually create text, drawings, or questions that can appear on screen. The more user-created material a game displays, the more useful Strict profanity filtering and a staffed moderation queue become.
Open the live lobby after these checks. Menus are the final authority for the copy you are running: confirm the toggles are present, note their current states, and take a screenshot or written note if another adult will host later. If the required control is absent, change titles before inviting players.

Match the setup to the audience
Young children and mixed ages
Start with a premise everyone accepts, then use Family-Friendly when available. Strict profanity filtering is sensible if children can submit answers, but it does not evaluate sarcasm, bullying, frightening references, or other context-sensitive material. A trusted adult can add judgment through Moderation where supported. Explain in advance that some answers may be rejected and replaced, so a child is not surprised when a response disappears.
Teen and adult family groups
You may decide that a T-rated premise is comfortable while still wanting to block profanity. Separate that decision from the game’s rating: the rating describes the title broadly, while the controls target particular content sources. Discuss whether dark humor, violence, sexual references, or competitive teasing are acceptable before launching.
Public streams and events
A public audience is less predictable than a private guest list. Use the layered setup Jackbox recommends for public play, assign a reviewer who is not distracted by hosting, and keep both room-access credentials and the moderation password out of the broadcast. Test the moderator page and submit a harmless practice response before going live so the reviewer knows where approvals appear.

When a control is missing
Do not substitute a different feature’s name for the one you need. If Family-Friendly is absent, Strict profanity filtering may still address player answers, but it will not remove suggestive prompts supplied by the game. If profanity filtering is absent, a moderator may reject some content, but only if the title supports moderation and a person is watching. If both are missing, choose a title with a premise and content style your group already accepts.

Some titles need no separate Family-Friendly toggle because Jackbox identifies them as inherently family-friendly. That is different from a title with a family-unfriendly premise. Trivia Murder Party 2’s missing filter is tied to its murder theme, while Tee K.O. and Blather ‘Round are examples Jackbox identifies as inherently family-friendly. Treat these categories as reasons to select a game, not as interchangeable technical settings.
Settings for a public stream or event
Jackbox’s Party Pack 11 streaming guide specifically recommends three layers for public play, including streaming: Family-Friendly on, Moderation on, and Profanity Filter set to Strict. This is the publisher’s public-setting recommendation; a private family gathering can adapt it to the title and the people present.
- Keep the moderator password off-camera. Anyone who obtains it may be able to approve content.
- Control room visibility and joining. Use the available room-code and password protections so an open broadcast does not become an uncontrolled public lobby.
- Assign a dedicated reviewer. The host who is playing, streaming, and troubleshooting may miss a queue item.
- Agree on rejection rules in advance. Decide how you will handle profanity, sexual references, harassment, spoilers, or material that is legal but unsuitable for your audience.
- Watch the first submissions closely. A filter’s presence does not establish how every audience member will interpret a response.
How ratings should influence your choice
Jackbox says its games are rated T for Teen, except The Jackbox Naughty Pack, which is rated M. Jackbox characterizes the Family-Friendly-filtered experience as closer to E10+. Those are the publisher’s descriptions, not a guarantee that a filtered session will suit every child or every household.
The Naughty Pack is described as containing mature themes and explicit content and as not intended for children. No setting should be presented as a way to turn that premise into a children’s game. For any other T-rated title, read the premise and inspect the exact controls rather than treating the rating as a complete suitability test.

Choosing by rating alone
Why it fails: A T rating and a filtered experience described as closer to E10+ do not account for your group’s sensitivity to themes such as murder, sexual references, or dark humor. Fix: Evaluate the premise and the controls separately.
Turning on Moderation without staffing it
Why it fails: The feature depends on a person approving submissions. Fix: Assign a reviewer, keep the password private, and test the moderation page before inviting players.
