Tom’s Hardware reports that port as USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps—not Thunderbolt or USB4. A reported enthusiast workaround instead uses the machine’s sole internal M.2 slot with an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, an external GPU dock and a separate boot-drive enclosure. That is an experimental hardware modification, not a standard enclosure purchase.
Check the host connection before buying an enclosure
An eGPU enclosure is only a match if the host computer supports the connection the enclosure requires. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not establish Thunderbolt or USB4 compatibility.

Valve’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide lists the machine’s video outputs. Tom’s Hardware reports its rear USB-C port as USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps. That specification is not evidence of a Thunderbolt or USB4 eGPU link, so do not choose a conventional enclosure on the basis of the connector’s shape.

How the main options compare
| Option | What is established | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional Thunderbolt/USB4 eGPU enclosure | Sonnet’s Windows 11 eGPU guide describes support for Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 and certain USB4 host ports. Sonnet Windows 11 eGPU Setup Guide | The Steam Machine’s cited USB-C specification is USB 3.2 Gen 2, not a stated Thunderbolt or USB4 host connection. A direct match is not established. |
| M.2-to-OCuLink adapter plus external dock | Tom’s Hardware reported this route in an enthusiast Steam Machine modification published August 11, 2026. Tom’s Hardware report | Uses the sole internal M.2 slot, moves the boot SSD to external storage, needs suitable GPU power if the dock has no PSU, and may require a chassis cable route or alteration. |
| Skip the eGPU modification | Avoids assuming unsupported host-port compatibility or changing the machine’s internal hardware. | Does not add an external GPU; whether another system is a better fit depends on your budget and requirements. |
What the reported OCuLink workaround involves
The reported build removed the SSD from the Steam Machine’s sole M.2 slot and installed an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter there. Because the internal slot was occupied by the adapter, the builder moved the boot SSD into a USB-C NVMe enclosure. An OCuLink cable then connected the adapter to an external eGPU dock.

- MODULAR GPU & PSU SUPPORT — Swap out to the latest GPU and ATX PSU—or upcycle an older card with PCIe Gen 4 support via easy tool-free install using included thumbscrews
This gives a useful search phrase—M.2-to-OCuLink adapter—but it is not a plug-and-play recommendation. The report describes one modification, not repeatable compatibility across Steam Machine units, GPUs, SteamOS updates or games. It does not establish long-term reliability or benchmark performance.
Plan for storage and cable routing
- Account for the boot SSD that will no longer occupy the internal M.2 slot; the reported setup used a USB-C NVMe enclosure for it.
- Check the exact adapter, dock and GPU specifications together before ordering. Compatibility for all combinations is not established by the single reported build.
- Allow for the OCuLink cable’s physical route. In the report, the cable needed to pass through the chassis, and the builder had not completed that case modification.
Choose a power supply from the actual GPU and dock requirements
Do not infer a universal PSU wattage from the reported modification. Tom’s Hardware identifies the Aoostar EG01 dock used in the build as lacking an integrated power supply, but the report does not establish one wattage that suits every GPU or dock.

- Identify the exact GPU model and consult its power requirements.
- Check whether the specific eGPU dock includes a PSU and what power supply it requires.
- If the dock has no PSU, select a separate PC power supply that meets the GPU and dock manufacturers’ requirements, including the necessary power connections.
These are component-specific checks, not a guarantee that a particular PSU makes the Steam Machine modification compatible.

Conventional enclosure requirements are not a Steam Machine compatibility guarantee
Sonnet’s Windows 11 eGPU Setup Guide says its external graphics setup supports AMD RX 6000-series and newer or NVIDIA RTX 30-series and newer cards on computers equipped with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 and certain USB4 ports. Sonnet also says USB4 systems must have the required USB4 Host Router, and that the guide’s eGPU functionality requires the latest 64-bit version of Windows 11.

- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
Those are Sonnet’s requirements for its Windows setup. They do not establish that every enclosure works with every operating system, nor do they show that the Steam Machine’s reported USB 3.2 Gen 2 port provides the required host connection. Do not treat them as a SteamOS or Steam Machine guarantee.

Opening the machine to use its M.2 slot and route a cable carries physical and service trade-offs. Valve’s Steam Support guide warns: “Valve is not responsible for replacing or servicing screws or other components damaged while attempting to open or modify your Steam Machine.” Read the Valve Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide before deciding whether to open the system.

For a buyer seeking a conventional accessory, the evidence does not support purchasing a Thunderbolt/USB4 enclosure for direct connection to the documented rear USB-C port. The OCuLink route is an experimental alternative only for someone prepared to move the boot drive, verify every component, handle external GPU power and accept the physical modification.
