If your eGPU is not detected—or games run slower than expected—first confirm that your computer’s exact port supports an eGPU, then check the cable and enclosure power. Only after the hardware link is sound should you move on to firmware, drivers, GPU detection, game settings, and display routing. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish compatibility.
Start by confirming your computer supports this eGPU connection
Before reinstalling drivers or replacing parts, write down your computer model, operating system, exact port, enclosure model, and graphics card. Check the computer maker’s specifications for that model and port. USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guarantee of Thunderbolt or external-GPU support. NVIDIA, for example, says its USB-C port is not compatible with external graphics products (NVIDIA Support).

For a Mac, Apple’s documented eGPU support is for Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later. Apple’s compatibility guidance lists supported AMD GPU families and enclosure combinations by macOS version; a card fitting physically does not mean it is supported. Those requirements should not be generalized to every Mac or newer hardware generation. Apple also says eGPUs are unavailable in macOS Recovery and during system updates, and that macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later do not support eGPUs in Windows through Boot Camp (Apple’s eGPU compatibility and setup guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the cable, connection, and enclosure power
- Shut down or disconnect safely according to the enclosure maker’s instructions. Check that the enclosure is plugged into a working outlet and that its power switch is on. If you need to reseat the graphics card or its power leads, follow the enclosure’s instructions.
- Connect the enclosure directly to a supported host port. Remove docks, hubs, and adapters from the connection while troubleshooting.
- Use the supplied cable or a certified Thunderbolt cable. A USB-C cable may fit but lack the specification needed for the eGPU link. Apple recommends the supplied cable or an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable and a direct connection for best performance; MSI likewise recommends a certified cable (Apple; MSI).
- Check the enclosure’s power requirements. Confirm the enclosure can power the installed GPU and that all required GPU power leads are connected. Do not apply one system’s power-delivery specification to another: Apple’s page, for example, specifies at least 85 watts of charging power for a particular listed MacBook Pro use case, not as a universal eGPU requirement (Apple).
Do not connect or disconnect a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU while the computer is asleep or hibernating. Dell documents detection and other issues after hot-plugging in those states (Dell Support).

Find out whether the enclosure or the GPU is missing
Check two separate things: whether the enclosure appears in the operating system’s Thunderbolt or connected-device view, and whether the graphics card appears among the system’s graphics adapters. The exact menus differ by computer and operating-system version, so use the host and enclosure makers’ documentation for the relevant model.
- Neither the enclosure nor GPU appears: Recheck host-port support, direct connection, cable, enclosure power, and Thunderbolt firmware. If possible, try another certified cable and test the enclosure on another compatible computer. MSI recommends these checks to help isolate a host-side fault from a cable or device fault (MSI’s Thunderbolt troubleshooting guidance).
- The enclosure appears, but the GPU does not: Focus on enclosure power, GPU seating and power leads, card/enclosure compatibility, host firmware, and whether the operating system can enumerate the card.
- The GPU appears, but a game is not using it: Check the game’s graphics selection and display path before changing drivers. Detection proves the system can see the card; it does not prove a particular application is rendering on it.
Update the software that belongs to each part
Use the support page for your exact computer model to check for BIOS, Thunderbolt driver, and host-firmware updates. Check the enclosure maker’s page for enclosure firmware, and follow the platform and GPU makers’ instructions for graphics drivers. MSI identifies driver version, firmware, cable quality, and power as possible causes of Thunderbolt instability or non-detection; Sonnet’s Windows 11 guide also calls for current operating-system, BIOS, firmware, and GPU-driver setup for the configurations it covers (MSI; Sonnet Windows 11 eGPU Setup Guide).

Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
- Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
Do not install a driver or firmware package simply because its name includes Thunderbolt or your GPU brand. Verify that it applies to your model and operating system, and follow the vendor’s update order. A driver reinstall alone cannot make an unsupported port compatible or fix a disconnected, underpowered enclosure.
Fix low frame rates when the eGPU is detected
Confirm the game is selecting the eGPU
On macOS, check whether the application supports eGPU acceleration and whether it chooses a graphics processor itself. Apple notes that some applications select their GPU directly and ignore the “Prefer External GPU” setting (Apple Support). On Windows, verify the game’s graphics preference in the operating system or the relevant GPU software, using instructions for your Windows and driver versions.

Check which display the game is using
For workloads that can use an external display, connect the monitor to a display output on the eGPU and launch the game on that screen. Apple says applications generally use the GPU associated with the primary display and documents setting an eGPU-connected display as the main display on supported macOS versions (Apple Support). Display routing and available settings vary by platform and model.
Compare performance under the same conditions
There is no universal FPS increase to expect from an eGPU. Results depend on the host, graphics card, game, resolution, display connection, and configuration; the official setup sources cited here do not establish a general benchmark. To diagnose a particular game, compare repeatable runs at the same resolution and graphics settings, on the same display, and note whether the game is rendering on the eGPU. Treat a benchmark as relevant only when its hardware and test conditions match yours.

When the problem points to a specific model
Some troubleshooting advice applies only to a named system. ASUS’s eGPU guidance is for NUC computers, so its boot and display-path details should not be treated as universal PC instructions (ASUS NUC eGPU troubleshooting). Sonnet’s Windows 11 instructions likewise cover the configurations described in its guide, not every Windows eGPU setup (Sonnet guide).
