Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to play physical PS5 or PS4 games, or use discs for movies. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you buy games through PlayStation Store and do not need a built-in disc drive. Sony’s current US product page lists 1TB of storage for the disc model and 825GB for the Digital Edition; both figures are listed capacities, not estimates of usable space. Sony’s PS5 comparison describes the choice as “Blu-ray Disc and all-digital consoles.”
What is the difference between the PS5 editions?
The standard PS5 console has a built-in disc drive and supports PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as digital downloads. The PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and is intended for downloaded games. Sony’s current US product page lists these models as 1TB and 825GB, respectively; those are the capacities Sony lists, not the amount of space available after system software or a guarantee of how many games fit. See Sony’s PS5 product comparison.
Which PS5 should you choose?
Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you use physical media
- You own PS5 or PS4 games on Blu-ray and want to keep playing them.
- You expect to buy physical game copies.
- You want the option to play discs rather than relying only on downloaded games.
Sony lists PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game support for the disc model. It also supports digital downloads, so choosing it does not limit you to physical games. Sony’s product page lists the supported game formats.
Choose the Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
- You buy games through PlayStation Store.
- You do not need a built-in drive for games or other discs.
- You are comfortable with a console designed for downloaded games.
The Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive, so it cannot play physical game discs as sold. Some eligible models can use a separately sold Sony Disc Drive, but compatibility depends on the console model group.

Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sony sells a separate Disc Drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. Sony’s setup guidance identifies compatibility with PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups; check your exact model and the regional product listing before buying, because the add-on is not compatible with every Digital Edition. During setup, the drive must be paired with the console over an internet connection. Sony’s accessories page describes supported models and disc formats, and Sony’s setup instructions explain model-group compatibility and pairing.
The add-on supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, according to Sony. If movie playback is important, confirm that the console, disc, and region meet your needs before treating it as a general-purpose player.

Compare storage and total cost before buying
For the US models shown on Sony’s current product page, the disc-equipped PS5 is listed with 1TB and the Digital Edition with 825GB. Sony’s listed capacities do not establish usable space or how many games each console can hold, so avoid using them as a direct game-count estimate. Check the current model specifications.
Compare current console prices in your market rather than assuming there is a fixed price gap. If you might add a drive to an eligible Digital Edition later, include that separate purchase in the total cost. Sony’s buying page routes customers to retailers, where prices and availability can change. Check Sony’s buying options and retailer links.

Does one version perform better in games?
The Sony comparison cited here establishes differences in disc support and listed storage, but it does not establish a performance advantage for either edition. Choose based on the media you use, storage specification, compatibility, and current local pricing rather than assuming the disc model runs games faster.
