Start by identifying which problem you have: a launch failure or crash, consistently low frame rates, intermittent stutter, or a graphics defect. Check that your PC matches the settings you are trying to run, verify the game files if it will not start or crashes, and test one reversible change at a time. The documented DirectX 12 fix for Intel Iris Plus Graphics applies to a specific red-and-black rendering issue—not to every crash or performance problem.
Record the symptoms before changing settings
A short baseline makes troubleshooting more useful and helps support staff distinguish a game issue from a settings or hardware limit. Record:
- CPU, GPU, VRAM, and RAM;
- Windows version and graphics-driver version;
- Store or launcher used to run the game;
- DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, and upscaling settings;
- Approximate average FPS and whether the problem is steady or intermittent;
- When the issue occurs, whether the whole PC freezes or only the game closes, and any error text;
- Whether it began after a game or driver update.
Change one setting at a time and note the result. That makes it easier to tell whether a test helped.
Check the requirements for your target settings
Minimum requirements do not promise smooth performance at every resolution or graphics preset. Ubisoft’s October 2020 PC specifications list separate configurations for 1080p low, 1080p high, 1440p high, 4K ultra, and ray tracing. For example, the ray-tracing-disabled 1080p low minimum listed an Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, a GTX 970/GTX 1650 or Radeon R9 290X, 4 GB of video memory, 8 GB dual-channel RAM, and 45 GB of storage. Its ray-tracing-disabled 1440p high recommendation listed an i7-9700 or Ryzen 5 3600, an RTX 2060 Super, 8 GB of video memory, 16 GB dual-channel RAM, and 45 GB of storage. These are Ubisoft’s dated 2020 configurations, not current buying advice. See Ubisoft’s PC specifications.

Storage figures differ between Ubisoft pages: the 2020 specifications list 45 GB, or 45 GB plus a 20 GB HD texture pack for 4K ultra configurations, while the Ubisoft Store game page consulted October 7, 2026 lists 80 GB. Check the current storefront listing and the edition installed on your PC rather than treating these figures as a single timeless requirement. Ubisoft Store: Watch Dogs: Legion on PC & More.
If the game will not start or keeps crashing, verify its files
Ubisoft Help documents file verification as a troubleshooting step for Ubisoft Connect PC. Open Ubisoft Connect, go to Library, select Watch Dogs: Legion, choose the gear icon beside Play, then select Verify files. If you own the game on Steam or Epic, use that launcher’s file-verification feature instead. Verification checks the installed files without requiring a manual deletion of game data. See Ubisoft’s verification instructions.

Update the graphics driver, matching the fix to the issue
Install a suitable driver for your specific GPU from its manufacturer’s support channel, then restart Windows and test the game again. A driver update can be a reasonable diagnostic step, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every crash or stutter.
Specific Intel Iris Plus DirectX 12 rendering corruption
Intel documents a narrow issue: red-and-black corruption in the 3D world in Watch Dogs: Legion on Intel Iris Plus Graphics in a named Windows 10 and driver environment. Intel says the issue is fixed in driver 30.0.100.9667 and newer. If your GPU and visual symptom match, install an applicable fixed driver. Intel also lists DirectX 11 as a workaround for this issue, while warning that it has much lower performance in the described case. Treat that API change as a targeted workaround, not a general performance recommendation. Details: Intel’s Watch Dogs: Legion DirectX 12 issue note.

For low FPS or stutter, reduce load and isolate variables
If the game launches but performance is poor, first compare your hardware with the specification tier for your resolution and features. Then test less demanding settings: lower the resolution or preset, or turn down expensive graphics features such as ray tracing. Measure after each change so you can see which adjustment affects FPS or stutter.
Temporarily disable overlays one at a time and check whether the symptom changes. A Steam player-support discussion from August 29, 2023 includes a Ubisoft Support reply advising the player to inspect CPU and GPU usage, test overlays, and check shader-cache space and access. That is case-specific community guidance, not a universal Ubisoft fix; use it as a set of diagnostic checks rather than assuming any one item is the cause. Steam Community: Performance issues.

Escalate with a useful troubleshooting record
If the problem persists, contact Ubisoft Support and include the hardware, Windows and driver versions, launcher, DirectX mode, resolution, settings, crash timing, and any error text. Add whether file verification completed and the result of each controlled settings or overlay test. Avoid destructive file changes, registry edits, or third-party driver utilities unless support for your specific case directs you to them.

Ubisoft discussed stability improvements and graphics optimization in November 2020, and the developer team described the single-player game as being in a solid state in a December 2020 message. Those launch-era statements provide historical context; they do not establish a current support commitment or guarantee stability on a present-day PC.
