How to Choose Between a Remaster, a Remake, and the Original Game

Remaster and remake are loose labels. Compare what changed, what content is included, and whether the edition works with your platform and ownership.

Choose by comparing what changed and what you want to play—not by trusting the label. A remaster usually aims to preserve the original experience while improving its presentation; a remake may rebuild or redesign substantial parts of it. Because publishers use the terms loosely, check gameplay, content, platform support, and transfer options for the specific edition.

What distinguishes a remaster from a remake?

There is no universally binding definition. Square Enix localization project manager Yusuke Haraguchi describes a remake as a project that may refashion graphics, characters, or game design using modern tools, or make other large-scale changes. A remaster generally aims to deliver the same gaming experience with newer graphics, higher resolution, or an improved development medium. Those are useful guidelines, not rules that every release follows. Square Enix’s explanation makes the caveat explicit.

  • Original: The historical release, with its original design and presentation. It may be playable on current hardware through backward compatibility or another version, but availability depends on the game and platform.
  • Remaster: Usually retains the recognizable game and its core experience while updating visuals or technical presentation. It may still add or alter convenience features.
  • Remake: Can rebuild assets, systems, or design more extensively, and may change how the game plays. It can preserve the original’s identity without reproducing every detail.

Why the label alone can mislead

Real projects blur the categories. Vicarious Visions game director Dan Tanguay called Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy “a remaster plus.” He said the original code and assets were nearly unusable, so the team rebuilt gameplay from scratch using original level geometry as a guide, recreated characters and cinematics, and added features such as unified saves, menus, and time trials. The label did not communicate the full extent of the work. Tanguay’s account on PlayStation.Blog explains why.

On the other hand, a remaster can involve extensive visual changes while aiming to preserve the original style. Electronic Arts says Mass Effect Legendary Edition built on original assets and improved lighting, shadows, post-processing, environments, and reflections, with the goal of staying true to the trilogy’s aesthetic. That is substantial presentation work, but it does not by itself mean the games were redesigned as remakes. EA’s visual-improvements overview describes the approach.

Compare the changes that affect your playthrough

Before choosing a version, look for specific descriptions from the developer or publisher. Prioritize the changes most likely to alter your experience:

  • Gameplay and design: Check for changes to controls, mechanics, difficulty, camera, pacing, or level design. Modernized visuals do not guarantee that gameplay is untouched.
  • Story and included content: Look for script changes, added chapters, included expansions, and missing modes. A newer edition can omit content from the original as well as add it.
  • Convenience and accessibility: Check for new accessibility options, save or checkpoint systems, menus, and other quality-of-life features.
  • What was rebuilt: Look for whether the team retained original code or assets, or created new assets, levels, engines, or systems. Developer explanations are more useful than the label alone.

Check the exact edition and platform

Do not assume that ownership, saves, trophies, or included modes carry over between versions. These details are specific to a game, edition, platform, and sometimes region; verify them on the relevant product page before deciding.

The Last of Us Part I illustrates the trade-offs. PlayStation describes its PS5 release as a ground-up remake with modernized gameplay mechanics and expanded accessibility options. Its US product FAQ says the release includes Left Behind but not Factions multiplayer; it also says PS3/PS4 saves and trophies do not transfer and there is no upgrade path from the PS3/PS4 versions. The FAQ lists September 2, 2022, as the PS5 release date. These are details of this particular edition, not general rules for remakes. Check the current listing for your region and platform. PlayStation’s product page and FAQ provide the edition details.

Use this decision process

  1. Decide what matters most. If you want the game as it originally appeared, look for the original release where it is accessible. If you want a familiar experience with updated presentation, a remaster may fit. If you want a more extensive modernization or reinterpretation, consider a remake.
  2. Read the change list. Confirm what happened to gameplay, story, modes, accessibility, and presentation. Treat words such as “faithful” as the publisher’s description, then check the listed features.
  3. Verify your setup and ownership. Confirm the platform and edition, backward compatibility, upgrade eligibility, save and trophy transfer, and included content.
  4. Choose based on the trade-off you accept. A newer version may be easier to play or more accessible, but it may not preserve every original feature or detail. If one specific original element matters to you, make sure it is still present before buying or starting.

What announced projects can—and cannot—tell you

Development plans are not a substitute for final edition details. In Ubisoft’s December 15, 2021 announcement of a Splinter Cell remake, producer Matt West said, “To me, a remake takes what you’d do in a remaster and goes a little bit further with it.” Ubisoft described a rebuild in its Snowdrop engine and plans to update visuals and selected design elements while keeping the game linear and preserving the early games’ identity. Those statements document the project’s plans at announcement time; they do not establish its later release status or guarantee that announced features are final. Ubisoft’s announcement and interview give the stated intent.
