To use a new SSD in Windows, initialize it if necessary, create and format a volume in Disk Management, and assign it a drive letter. Then move games with the tools in their launcher—for Steam, add the SSD as a library location and use Steam’s Storage page. Back up important files and saves first: initializing a disk already in use or formatting the selected volume can erase data.
Before formatting: confirm the SSD is the right disk
Disk initialization and formatting are different steps. Initialization prepares a disk to hold partitions; creating and formatting a volume makes space on it usable in Windows. Be certain you have selected the new SSD, not a drive containing files you want to keep. Microsoft warns that “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Initializing a disk that is already in use can also erase its data.

- Back up any data on a disk that might not be blank.
- Check the selected disk’s capacity and status in Disk Management before making changes.
- If you are buying an SSD rather than installing one you already own, check your PC’s storage specifications for supported form factor and interface; the Windows setup steps do not establish which SSD fits your computer.
Initialize and format the SSD in Disk Management
Microsoft says Disk Management works the same way in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open it by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management, searching Windows for Create and format hard disk partitions, or running diskmgmt.msc.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Bring the disk online if needed. If the SSD appears as Offline, right-click its disk label and choose Online.
- Initialize an uninitialized disk. If Windows prompts you to initialize the disk, choose the correct disk and partition style. GPT is the usual choice for a modern UEFI PC; Microsoft says GPT supports volumes larger than 2 TB. MBR is intended for older systems without UEFI support. Microsoft Learn notes that GPT is the default partition style.
- Create a volume. Right-click the SSD’s unallocated space and choose New Simple Volume. Follow the wizard, keeping the default size if you want to use the full drive.
- Assign a drive letter. Choose an available letter in the wizard so Windows and game launchers can address the new volume.
- Choose a file system and finish. Select NTFS, which Microsoft Learn identifies as the usual choice, then complete the wizard. The new volume should appear in File Explorer under the assigned letter.

Move installed Steam games to the SSD
Steam’s Storage controls let you add another library location and move installed games there without treating the task as a Windows-level file copy.
- Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
- Use the plus button to add a library location on the SSD. Choose a folder on the new drive.
- In Storage, select the source drive and select the games to move.
- Choose Move and select the SSD library location.
- After the move, launch the game. If files appear damaged or the game fails to start, use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files option.
Steam documents this workflow in Moving a Steam Installation and Games and file verification in Verify Integrity of Game Files. Steam cautions against installing the Steam client on an external hard drive because of possible performance issues.

Moving the Steam client is not the same as moving games
If your goal is to relocate the Steam installation itself rather than move individual games, follow Steam’s separate client-move procedure instead of assuming the game-move steps will relocate everything. Steam recommends backing up its steamapps folder before moving the installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect game saves before and after a move
Steam Cloud can preserve saves for games that support it, but some third-party games do not use Steam Cloud. Their save locations are chosen by each game’s developer; DocumentsMy Games is a common location, not a guarantee. Check the game’s documentation or support information and make a separate save backup if needed before moving or reinstalling it.

Xbox app and Microsoft Store games have different limits
Do not assume every Xbox app or Microsoft Store title can be moved with the same controls as a Steam game. Microsoft’s Flat File Install documentation describes cross-drive moves in the Xbox app for supported PC GDK Flat File Install games; it explicitly does not cover UWP app-model titles. For a particular game, check whether its launcher exposes a move option and whether that title is supported. See Microsoft’s Flat File Install overview.
