To choose between gaming convention ticket types, start with the days you will attend and the activities you want to do. Then confirm which spaces and events each pass covers: general admission may not include tournaments, scheduled games, panels, autographs, or other capacity-limited activities. Ticket names are not standardized, so compare the exact inclusions and terms for the convention and year you plan to attend.
Which days will you attend?
First, decide whether you need one day or several. A day pass may be valid only for its named date; a weekend pass may cover a defined set of days rather than the whole convention. For example, Game Con Canada lists an All-Access weekend pass alongside separate Friday, Saturday, and Sunday passes. IKKiCON describes three-day weekend passes and says day passes are valid only on the corresponding purchased days. Check the current dates and validity terms on the organizer’s official ticket page: Game Con Canada FAQ and IKKiCON tickets.
- Choose a single-day pass if your plans fit within one covered day.
- Choose a multi-day or weekend pass only after checking exactly which dates it covers.
- If your schedule is uncertain, check whether the organizer permits changes or transfers before buying; policies differ.
What do you want to do at the convention?
Do not assume a badge or pass includes every activity on the schedule. A general-admission credential can cover entry to the convention while individual games, tournaments, classes, or other events require a separate ticket, registration, or fee.
Check must-attend events before choosing
Make a short list of activities you would be disappointed to miss. For each one, confirm whether it is included with admission, requires a separate reservation or ticket, or has a limited capacity. Gen Con explains that an event ticket confirms a spot in a scheduled game or event; its policy also cautions that generic tickets do not guarantee admission or participation if an event sells out. Other conventions may require preregistration for selected special events, Learn-to-Plays, or classes while leaving open gaming available without a reservation. TantrumCon describes that distinction in its FAQ. IKKiCON notes that some tournament gaming sessions and certain autographs are not included in its standard weekend pass. Verify the activity’s requirements with the organizer rather than relying on the pass label.
Separate tickets do not always mean the same thing
At some events, an additional ticket reserves a place; at others, a generic ticket may serve as payment but leave participation dependent on availability. Read the specific event listing and ticket policy, especially if a particular session is central to your plans.
Which spaces and programming are included?
Compare what each credential admits you to, not just its name. Depending on the convention, access may differ for an exhibit or festival hall, business hall, main program, evening events, meetings, or other restricted areas. A pass with “standard,” “festival,” or “all-access” in its name does not have a consistent meaning across organizers.
GDC’s official FAQ illustrates how much access can vary: it describes categories including Festival Hall Only, Business Hall Only, Indie, Start-up, Academic, and 1-Day Career, as well as a premium Game Changer tier. The access and eligibility rules differ by category, and some restricted passes can be combined. Compare the exact inclusions and exclusions in the GDC FAQ for the event year you are considering.

Consider a premium tier only if you will use its specific benefits. GDC’s Game Changer pass, for example, lists a lounge, meals, reserved seating, and a GDC Vault subscription beyond Festival Pass access. Those features may matter to one attendee and add little value to another. Check which benefits are included, when they are available, and whether they fit your schedule before comparing the price.
There is no universal “best value” pass: the right comparison depends on the convention, event year, schedule, and what you plan to attend. Compare the total checkout cost and the access you will actually use; do not infer savings from a tier name.

What should families and attendees with specific needs check?
Confirm age rules, eligibility for discounted categories, accessibility arrangements, and any family-specific options directly with the organizer. These terms are event-specific. TantrumCon, for instance, describes a family badge for up to five family members and a family gaming space in its FAQ; that arrangement should not be assumed at other conventions.
If a discounted pass is limited to a group such as students, academics, or industry attendees, check what proof is required and when it must be provided. Contact the organizer if the published accessibility information does not answer a question about your needs.

Check the final checkout total, current availability, and the event’s terms for refunds, transfers, and deadlines before you buy. These policies vary substantially: Gen Con publishes year-specific refund deadlines and administrative-fee terms; TantrumCon says badges are not refundable but may be transferred under its policy; IKKiCON says ticket sales are final and nonrefundable and prohibits transfers. Treat these as examples, not standard rules, and read the current official terms for your event year.
