Assetto Corsa’s appeal to PC sim racers rests on a combination of detailed driving simulation, licensed cars and real-world circuits, flexible ways to play, and extensive customization. The official features explain what the game offers; they do not establish a single measured reason that players like it.
Why do people still play Assetto Corsa?
The original Assetto Corsa launched on PC on 19 December 2014, but its appeal is not limited to one kind of racing session. Players can practice, chase lap times, take on structured events, race online, or customize the experience. Steam’s listing also describes extensive modification tools, making the PC version adaptable beyond its built-in content.
This is the original Assetto Corsa, not the separate products Assetto Corsa Competizione or Assetto Corsa EVO. Steam’s product page lists the original game and its features.
What makes the driving feel detailed?
The official product description calls out tire and vehicle behaviors including flat spots, heat cycles, graining, blistering, and aerodynamic simulation. Kunos and 505 Games say development drew on practical motorsport knowledge and cooperation with real-world drivers and racing teams. These are specific elements of the simulation, rather than proof that the game is objectively the most realistic simulator.

Which cars and circuits are included?
The official listing names manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Lotus. It also says circuits were developed using laser scanning, with examples including Monza, Silverstone, Imola, Mugello, Spa, and Brands Hatch. This mix of recognizable cars and real tracks gives players familiar settings for practice and racing.
A 2018 announcement for the Ultimate Edition described that package as including 178 cars and 40 track configurations across 19 circuits. Those are figures for the edition announced at that time, not a current count of the game’s full inventory; the live listing is the better place to check what is presently offered.

Assetto Corsa supports both unstructured driving and more goal-oriented play. The officially listed options include:
- Career, events, challenges, and custom championships
- Online multiplayer
- Practice, hot laps, and time attack
- Drift and drag racing
The store describes four driving-assist profiles, including a customizable profile. That gives newcomers options to approach the driving experience more progressively while leaving room to tailor the setup.

Do you need a steering wheel to play?
No. The official hardware list includes keyboard, gamepad, joystick, and steering wheels, including professional devices. A wheel is an optional way to play, not a stated requirement. The page also lists VR, triple-monitor setups, and TrackIR, giving players with supported equipment additional display and tracking options.
