Nintendo Switch 2 is the clear fit if handheld or tabletop play and Nintendo’s library matter most. If you want a home console, compare PS5 and Xbox Series X by must-play games, the library and discs you already own, edition, local price, storage, and subscription value—not specifications alone.
Start with the games you cannot do without
Write down the specific games you expect to play, then check their availability on each console. Do not assume a title is available because a platform has a large catalogue or because a subscription advertises a game library. Game catalogues and subscriptions change, and a complete current comparison of every platform’s games is not established here.

If you already own original Nintendo Switch games, check each title for Switch 2 compatibility. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some may not be supported or fully compatible (Nintendo Switch 2 features; Nintendo Support). Xbox Series X is backward compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations, according to Microsoft, but verify the particular games you care about (Microsoft Store).
Decide where and how you will play
Choose Switch 2 if you want handheld, tabletop, and TV play
Switch 2 is the only one of these three systems designed for all three settings. Nintendo describes the console as able to “transform to suit your game style” and lists handheld, tabletop, and TV modes (Nintendo Switch 2 features). That flexibility makes it the natural choice when playing away from a television is a priority.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo Australia lists a 7.9-inch 1920 × 1080 LCD, 256 GB of internal storage, HDR10, and VRR up to 120 Hz. In TV mode, its listed output is up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440 (Nintendo Australia specifications). These are system capabilities, not a promise that every game uses those resolutions or frame rates.
Choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X as home consoles
If the console will stay by your TV, portability is no longer the deciding factor. Compare the titles you want, the digital purchases and physical discs you already own, the exact console edition, and local prices. Xbox Series X is presented as a home console and includes a UHD Blu-ray disc player; Microsoft specifies native 4K output and broad backward compatibility (Microsoft Store). Those capabilities do not establish that every game runs at native 4K.
PS5 comes in digital and disc editions, so check the exact edition and regional SKU before deciding whether it meets your needs for physical games. Do not treat the two editions as interchangeable when comparing prices or disc use.

Compare your existing library, discs, and accessories
- Owned Switch games: Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for each title. Some original Switch accessories also do not work with Joy-Con 2, while others may have limited uses; check the specific accessory before relying on it (Nintendo Switch 2 features; Nintendo Support).
- Owned Xbox games: Microsoft says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Compatibility is title-specific, so verify your games rather than assuming every older release works.
- Physical media: Xbox Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray drive. Confirm disc support on the particular PS5 edition you are considering and check the regional SKU. Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but that does not mean all older games or accessories are compatible.
- Online memberships: Nintendo Switch Online membership can continue on Switch 2, according to Nintendo. For all three platforms, check current local service terms and the games currently included before assigning a subscription a value.
Estimate the full cost, not just the console price
A September 2026 US comparison by Pandromeda reported the following prices. They are a dated snapshot, not a global or guaranteed current price list; retailer offers, bundles, stock, and regional prices can change the ranking (Pandromeda, September 2026).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Console or edition | Reported US price |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $499.99 |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PlayStation 5 disc edition | $649.99 |
| Xbox Series X | $799.99 |
Check the current price for your country and the exact edition before buying. Then account for the games you expect to purchase, any storage expansion you will need, and subscriptions you intend to keep. Subscription tiers, prices, benefits, and catalogues vary by service and region and are not listed here as fixed amounts. Compare the expected annual subscription spend with the cost of buying the games you actually plan to play. Tom’s Guide also identifies libraries, subscriptions, and game prices as relevant parts of the decision (Tom’s Guide).

Switch 2
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage. For expandable game storage, Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card; ordinary microSD cards are not the supported game-storage format. The 256 GB figure is the system’s listed capacity, not a promise that all of it is available for games (Nintendo Australia specifications).

Xbox Series X
Microsoft recommends a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card for additional storage at the console’s custom SSD performance. It is an optional add-on, not a requirement for every buyer (Microsoft Store).
PS5
Compare the storage capacity and expansion options for the exact PS5 model you are considering. A like-for-like three-way storage comparison is not established by the sources used here, so check Sony’s current information for that model rather than inferring parity from another console’s figures.

Quick Recap
Use this decision path
- List your must-play games. Check each title on the official store or compatibility information for the systems you are considering.
- Choose your play setting. If handheld or tabletop play is essential, Switch 2 is the system in this group designed for it. If you will play at a TV, compare PS5 and Xbox Series X on the remaining factors.
- Check what you already own. Verify older game and accessory compatibility, and identify whether you need a disc drive for games or movies.
- Compare the exact editions and local prices. Include bundles only when their contents are useful to you; do not treat a dated US price snapshot as your local quote.
- Add ongoing costs. Estimate spending on games, storage, and any subscription using current terms for your region.
- Choose the console that best fits those priorities. Hardware specifications matter when they change your experience, but they do not replace a match between the console, your games, and how you play.
