How to Choose Between PvE and PvP Extraction Games

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Choose a PvE extraction game if you want to explore, loot, complete objectives and coordinate with teammates without another player deciding to attack you. Choose a PvP or PvPvE extraction game if unpredictable human opponents, negotiation, ambushes and the risk of losing a promising run are part of the appeal. The labels are only a starting point: check the actual matchmaking, damage rules, party sizes, extraction penalties and whether a mode is permanent before committing to a game.

What PvE, PvP and PvPvE mean in an extraction game

Extraction games usually ask you to enter a dangerous map, collect valuable items or complete objectives, then reach an extraction point and leave alive. Your progress may depend on what you successfully bring out, so the source of danger changes the entire decision.

PvE: players versus the environment

In a PvE extraction game, enemies and hazards are controlled by the game. You and your squad coordinate against enemy units, bosses, traps, weather, timers or other environmental threats. The challenge can still be severe, but another player is not choosing whether to shoot you, steal your route or negotiate before betraying you.

PvE suits players who prefer learning enemy patterns, planning a cooperative build, completing objectives at a deliberate pace and improving through repeatable encounters. It is also the clearer choice if a player-caused setback would feel frustrating rather than exciting.

PvP: players versus players

In a PvP extraction game, human opponents are the central contest. Their decisions are less predictable than scripted enemies: they may rush your team, avoid you, bargain for safe passage, wait near an extraction point or change plans after hearing a firefight. Carrying valuable loot makes those decisions consequential.

Pure PvP extraction formats can still include non-player enemies, but the defining threat is competition from other players. Check the individual game’s rules instead of assuming that “PvP” means every encounter is a fight or that the game has no cooperative objectives.

PvPvE: both threats exist in the same run

PvPvE combines game-controlled enemies with human opponents. You may be fighting machines or creatures when another squad arrives, or you may use an enemy encounter as cover for a push against another team. The balance differs by game, map and mode; not every player is hostile, and not every run produces the same level of contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ARC Raiders is a current example. Its official descriptions present danger from ARC machines and from Raiders who prey on other players, while Embark describes the classic experience as PvPvE. That combination creates emergent situations that a purely scripted PvE game cannot reproduce, but it also means a successful-looking run can end because of a human decision.

Start with the kind of danger you actually enjoy

The fastest way to choose is to identify which failure feels meaningful rather than merely annoying. A game can have excellent weapons and progression and still be a poor fit if its main source of tension is one you dislike.

Priority PvE generally fits better PvP/PvPvE generally fits better
Opponent behavior Predictable rules, readable enemy roles and learnable encounters Human decisions, deception, improvisation and changing tactics
Social experience Coordinated cooperation against shared threats Negotiation, rivalry, betrayal risk or direct player combat
Desired tension Challenge without hostile player damage Stakes shaped by players who may contest, ambush or steal a run
Loss tolerance Prefer fewer setbacks caused by other people Accept setbacks as part of emergent competition
Mode check Confirm co-op rules, progression and whether friendly fire exists Confirm PvP exposure, party matchmaking and extraction-loss rules

This is a decision aid, not a ranking. A well-designed PvE game can be more demanding than a casual PvPvE game, and a PvPvE game may include long stretches of exploration with no human contact. Use the table to decide what to verify, not to predict every match.

Use the extraction loop to test your fit

Ask what makes a successful run satisfying

In PvE, satisfaction often comes from executing a plan: choosing a route, managing ammunition and healing, coordinating roles, defeating an objective and extracting with the planned rewards. The loop rewards knowledge of enemy behavior and teamwork against a common problem.

In PvP or PvPvE, satisfaction can come from reading another team, deciding whether to avoid a fight, taking a calculated engagement or escaping with loot while under pressure. The same map can produce different stories because human intentions are hidden. If that uncertainty sounds like the point rather than an interruption, the mixed format is likely closer to your preference.

Decide how you react to losing carried loot

Extraction games attach consequences to failure. Depending on the title, a failed run can cost items carried into the map, newly collected loot, consumables, equipment durability or time spent completing objectives. PvPvE adds the possibility that another player directly causes the loss.

Before choosing, find out exactly what is lost and what is protected. Some games limit losses to the current backpack; others make you risk equipment, insurance or a temporary opportunity. A player who enjoys high stakes should confirm that the recovery loop is deep enough to sustain losses. A player who dislikes player-caused setbacks should seek a true PvE queue rather than assuming a solo option removes the risk.

Separate combat preference from social preference

Wanting to play with other people does not automatically mean wanting PvP. PvE is often the better fit for a group that enjoys callouts, role specialization and shared objectives but does not want to fight another squad. Conversely, a solo player may enjoy PvPvE because the uncertainty creates tension even without a permanent team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for details such as proximity voice or text chat, revive rules, downed-player interactions, squad sizes and whether parties can include strangers. These systems determine whether the social experience is cooperative, adversarial or both.

Do not confuse solo queue with a PvE mode

“Solo” describes party size, not the source of danger. PlayStation’s description of ARC Raiders says the game is online-only but can be played solo or in a team of two or three. Its classic experience remains PvPvE, so a solo player can still encounter other players and the game’s machine threats.

Apply the same check to any extraction game:

  1. Find the threat rule. Look for explicit wording such as “PvE,” “player damage disabled” or “co-op against AI,” rather than a “solo” filter.
  2. Check matchmaking pools. A solo queue may place you against solo players, full squads or a mixture. The party-size rule does not establish the damage rule.
  3. Read extraction penalties. Solo play can make recovery harder if there is no teammate to revive you, even when the opposing threat is unchanged.
  4. Confirm whether solo is optional or required. Some games let a solo player enter a squad-based map; others provide a separate map or balancing system.

If the store page says only “play solo or in a team,” treat the threat model as unknown until the mode rules answer it.

Check whether the mode is permanent and what it changes

A menu toggle can be temporary, experimental or limited to a particular event. That distinction matters if you are choosing a game around a safer progression path.

ARC Raiders’ October 2026 PvE toggle test

In an announcement dated September 24, 2026, Embark said ARC Raiders would test a PvE matchmaking toggle from October 13 through October 20, 2026. During that window, players can choose the classic PvPvE experience or a PvE-focused option built around cooperation against ARC machines.

Test detail What Embark stated Why it matters when choosing
Availability Scheduled for October 13–20, 2026 The option is time-limited; availability after October 20 is not established.
Player damage Player-to-player damage is disabled in PvE sessions The test removes direct hostile-player damage, not every possible source of danger.
Party sizes Solos, Duos and Trios share PvE sessions Solo entry does not create a separate solo-only environment.
Progression rating PvPvE matchmaking rating is unaffected by PvE sessions Playing the test does not alter that stated PvPvE rating.
Special conditions Certain high-tension conditions are excluded The PvE experience is not a one-for-one copy of every classic-match condition.
Loot value Overall loot value is lower in PvE; baseline loot values are slightly higher in PvPvE Relative safety is balanced with reduced reward value in the test.
After the test Embark said the toggle would be removed and matchmaking would return to normal The studio did not promise a permanent PvE mode.

Embark explicitly framed the test as an alternative to PvP encounters, not as a new, harder PvE progression system. Do not treat these rules as permanent features, or generalize them to other games. Check the official ARC Raiders announcement again after the test period because mode availability and matchmaking details can change.

What the test says about player interest—and what it does not

Embark reported that 37% of its player population were friendly co-op players, 27% mixed players and 34% pure PvP players. It also said 51% of the surveyed playerbase expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. These are developer-reported figures about ARC Raiders and its survey, not genre-wide research. The announcement does not specify the survey sample size or method, so the percentages should not be used to claim that one extraction style is universally more popular.

Executive Producer Aleks summarized the uncertainty directly: “This test is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future.” Treat that statement as a product-status warning. If permanent PvE access is essential, wait for an explicit long-term mode announcement rather than buying on the assumption that the toggle will remain.

Use a repeatable checklist before choosing a game

1. Identify the actual threat model

Read the mode description for the words that govern play: enemy type, player damage, friendly fire, invasion rules and whether other teams share the map. “Co-op,” by itself, does not prove that PvP is absent. “Online-only,” by itself, does not prove that PvP is present.

2. Map the consequences of failure

  • What is lost when you fail to extract?
  • Does carried equipment return, break or disappear?
  • Can a teammate revive you, and what happens if the whole squad is down?
  • Are there protected rewards, starter kits or a low-risk recovery route?
  • Does a player-caused death have the same penalty as an environmental death?

3. Confirm party and matchmaking rules

  • Are solo, duo and trio queues separate or combined?
  • Can a solo player encounter premade groups?
  • Does the game use skill or matchmaking ratings, and which mode affects them?
  • Can you change modes between runs, or must you commit for a session?

4. Evaluate the cooperative work

For a PvE preference, look beyond the label. Strong co-op games give teammates distinct jobs: scouting, healing, carrying objectives, controlling crowds or managing resources. Check whether objectives require coordination or whether one player can complete everything alone. In a PvPvE game, also check whether cooperation is optional because the main progression can be completed without relying on strangers.

5. Check permanence and regional availability

Events, tests and limited-time playlists can disappear. Verify the current mode list, platform support, region restrictions, edition requirements and any online-service requirement on the official game page or platform listing before purchase. A description written during a test may not match the live matchmaking pool later.

A concrete PvE reference point: Rainbow Six Extraction

Ubisoft describes Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction as a tactical, cooperative PvE first-person shooter. It is a useful reference for the player who wants squad planning and an evolving alien threat without another team choosing to attack during the run. The comparison is about the threat model, not a claim that it has the same progression, extraction penalties or content cadence as ARC Raiders or another title.

When evaluating a PvE game with this kind of format, ask whether its objectives create meaningful decisions. A purely linear mission can be cooperative without feeling like an extraction game. Look for choices about route, timing, equipment, rescue and whether to leave with partial rewards or continue toward a riskier objective.

How to choose if you are undecided

Choose PvE first when your answers look like this

  • You want the enemy to follow rules you can learn and counter.
  • You enjoy teamwork but not bargaining, betrayal or being ambushed by another squad.
  • You would rather lose a run to a difficult objective than to a player waiting at extraction.
  • You want to practice movement, weapons or roles without a human opponent changing the encounter.
  • You need a stable mode for a regular group and do not want a limited-time playlist to determine access.

Choose PvP or PvPvE first when your answers look like this

  • The possibility of another player changes how you route, fight and decide when to extract.
  • You enjoy reading intentions, taking calculated risks and adapting to unfamiliar tactics.
  • You accept that some losses will feel unfair in the moment but meaningful in the larger competitive loop.
  • You want stories created by encounters between squads rather than only by scripted objectives.
  • You are willing to verify party matchmaking, player damage and loot-loss rules before each new game.

Choose a game with both options only after comparing the trade-offs

A dual-mode game can be ideal if your group’s preferences differ, but do not assume the two queues have identical rewards or progression. ARC Raiders’ 2026 test illustrates why: Embark said PvE loot value would be lower, some high-tension conditions would be absent and PvPvE matchmaking rating would remain separate from PvE sessions. A safer queue can therefore be a different economic and competitive experience, not simply the same game with damage switched off.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating “co-op” as proof of PvE

Many PvPvE games are cooperative inside a squad. Confirm whether outside players can damage you, contest objectives or take your loot.

Mistake: assuming no player contact means no risk

PvE can still contain severe penalties, escalating enemies, timers, limited ammunition and one-life objectives. The absence of PvP removes one category of uncertainty; it does not guarantee an easy progression path.

Mistake: assuming a PvE test represents the final design

Mistake: using population percentages as universal evidence

Developer-reported figures describe the stated game and survey. Without a disclosed sample and method, they cannot establish what the entire extraction genre prefers.

Mistake: choosing by label without checking loss rules

Two games both called PvPvE can differ radically in backpack losses, insurance, extraction frequency, squad sizes and recovery systems. Those details determine how often a mistake becomes a serious setback.

A five-minute pre-purchase comparison

Put the games you are considering in a simple note and answer the same questions for each. Use “not stated” when the official description does not answer one; uncertainty is safer than filling the gap with an assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question What to record Decision signal
Can other players damage me? Always, never, event-only or not stated Never supports a PvE preference; any player damage requires PvP tolerance.
What happens on failed extraction? Items, equipment, currency and progression lost High loss calls for a higher tolerance for setbacks.
Who can I queue with? Solo, duo, trio, larger squad and mixed-party rules Match the rule to your regular group.
Is the mode permanent? Core playlist, event, test or not stated Do not rely on a temporary option for a long-term preference.
How are rewards balanced? Loot modifiers, rating changes and excluded conditions Safer play may provide different progression value.

Compare the results with your tolerance for uncertainty, not with a generic “best extraction game” list. The right choice is the one whose failure conditions you can enjoy repeatedly.

What to verify when a game’s information is unclear

If a store page and community discussions use different labels, prioritize the current in-game matchmaking screen and the developer’s dated mode announcement. Look for a statement about player-to-player damage, not just references to “cooperation.” Check whether the information applies to your platform and region, and note the date because live-service rules can change.

For ARC Raiders specifically, the October 13–20, 2026 window is the relevant announced test period at the time covered here. If you are reading after that window, the toggle may have been removed as Embark said it would be, or the studio may have published a new decision. The test announcement’s “not a promise” language means an old menu screenshot is not evidence of permanent PvE access.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick PvE when cooperation against game-controlled threats is the experience you want to repeat; pick PvP or PvPvE when human unpredictability and high-stakes encounters are the attraction. Verify the live matchmaking and loss rules—especially for temporary options such as ARC Raiders’ October 13–20, 2026 PvE test—before you buy or commit time.
