On a PS5, install an anime service from Media > All Apps, select Download, then open TV & Video and follow that service’s sign-in and playback prompts. The exact app list depends on your country or region, so check All Apps on your own console. PlayStation identifies Crunchyroll as an anime option, and also offers a separate free Live TV on PS5 service with anime programming where available.
What you need before installing
You do not need a special accessory to install or watch an anime app. The PS5 menus, a DualSense controller and the service’s on-screen instructions are sufficient. A stable internet connection is needed for streaming, and you should have access to any account credentials the selected service requests.

There are two different ways to watch anime on PS5:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- An on-demand streaming app: You install a service from the PS5 app catalog and then use that provider’s own account, profile and subscription instructions. PlayStation’s general guide does not define one universal account or plan requirement for every service.
- Live TV on PS5: PlayStation describes this as a free-to-watch option with live channels and on-demand programming that includes anime. It uses a PlayStation account and asks you to create or link a Sony Pictures CORE account. Its catalog and eligibility can change.
Decide which route fits the show you want before you install anything. A free channel service and an on-demand anime library are not interchangeable: they can carry different titles, use different accounts and offer different viewing schedules.

- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
Install an anime streaming app
1. Open the Media area
- Start at the PS5 home screen.
- Move to the Media area. This is the part of the home screen used for video and other entertainment apps.
If the console opens on a game rather than the Media area, return to the home screen first. You are looking for the Media home, not the PlayStation Store page for a game.
2. Find All Apps
- In Media, select All Apps.
- Browse the services shown for your console and region.
- If the app is not visible among recently used apps, open App Library and look through the available apps there.
The catalog shown on your PS5 is the practical test of availability. A service named in a general PlayStation entertainment guide may not appear in every country or region, and the list can change over time.
3. Download the app
- Select the anime service you want.
- Choose Download.
- Wait for the installation to complete before trying to play a title.
The installation path is therefore Media home > All Apps > choose the app > Download. If the app does not appear in either All Apps or App Library, do not assume that changing a PS5 setting will make it available; regional distribution is controlled by the service and platform catalog.
Open the app and sign in
1. Go to TV & Video
- Return to the Media home after the download finishes.
- Select TV & Video.
- Choose the installed service or the content you want to watch.
TV & Video is where you select a service or title for playback. The exact sign-in screen, code-entry method, profile selector and playback controls are supplied by the individual app, so follow the current prompts shown on your television.
2. Complete the provider’s account flow
An app may ask you to sign in, create an account, select a profile or confirm a subscription. Use the instructions displayed by that service rather than assuming that a PlayStation account alone grants access. PlayStation’s general setup guidance does not publish the current plans, prices or account rules for every streaming provider.
If the service offers more than one access level, verify the terms on the provider’s own sign-in or account screen. Availability, eligibility and subscription requirements can differ by country or region. Do not treat a title’s appearance in a search result as proof that your account can play it; the service’s current catalog and account status determine playback.
Which anime services can appear on PS5?
PlayStation’s entertainment information names Crunchyroll as an anime streaming option on PS5. That is an example of a supported anime service, not a promise that the app is offered in every market. Check All Apps on your console before planning a setup around any particular provider.

Regional availability can affect three separate things:
- Whether the app can be downloaded at all.
- Whether an account can be created or used in your country.
- Whether a specific anime is in the catalog available to your account.
These are independent checks. An app can be listed while a particular series is unavailable, or a service can be available on the web while its PS5 app is not listed in your region. Use the service’s current account and catalog information when All Apps confirms that the app is installable.
Choose between an on-demand app and Live TV on PS5
Use the following distinctions when deciding what to install or open. The details for an on-demand service are intentionally conditional because each provider sets its own account and catalog rules.
| Option | How you access it | Account or payment considerations | Anime availability | Controller support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On-demand anime app | Media > All Apps > select the app > Download, then TV & Video | Follow the selected service’s current instructions for account access, subscription and profiles | Depends on the app’s current catalog and your region | Playback steps vary by app |
| Live TV on PS5 | Media > Live TV on PS5 | PlayStation describes it as free to watch; log in with a PlayStation account to create or link a Sony Pictures CORE account | Includes anime programming, with catalog and eligibility subject to change | DualSense and the Media Remote can be used |
The deciding questions are simple: Is the desired app or channel available where you live? Does it require its own account or a paid plan? Is the anime you want in the service’s current catalog? Check all three before troubleshooting a title that the service does not offer.
Set up Live TV on PS5
Live TV on PS5 is a separate viewing option, not an automatic replacement for an installed subscription streaming app. PlayStation describes it as providing free live channels and on-demand content that includes anime.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Media.
- Select Live TV on PS5.
- Log in with your PlayStation account when prompted.
- Follow the prompts to create or link a Sony Pictures CORE account.
- Browse the channels or on-demand selections currently offered and choose a program.
The service’s catalog and eligibility may change, so confirm that the anime you want is listed at the time you watch. Free access does not mean that every anime title on PS5 is included, and it does not remove the separate account-linking step.
Play a title after installation
Once an app is installed and your account flow is complete, use Media > TV & Video to select the service or title. The service may present a home screen, search field, watchlist or profile chooser in a different order from another app. Follow the labels on that app’s screen.

PlayStation Support states: “Playback steps vary by app. Check the information provided by the streaming service for details.” That distinction matters when a title opens but will not play, when a profile is missing, or when a service requests a new sign-in. Those are provider-specific flows rather than a single PS5-wide playback procedure.

Troubleshoot an app that will not start
Use PlayStation’s sequence in order. After each step, try opening the app again so you know whether the problem has changed. No single step is guaranteed to fix every service-specific failure.
1. Check PlayStation service status
First check whether PlayStation services are experiencing an outage or maintenance event. If the platform itself is unavailable, reinstalling an app will not resolve the immediate problem. Retry after the service-status issue has cleared.
2. Update the streaming app
- Highlight the streaming app on the PS5.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Use the update command shown in the menu if one is available.
An app update can be required before a provider will allow playback. The wording of the available command can vary with the app’s current state, so use the option presented by the console.
3. Update PS5 system software
Install any pending PS5 system-software update, then restart the app. An app and the console software can each have separate update requirements; updating only one does not confirm that the other is current.
4. Test the internet connection
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Use the result to distinguish a console connectivity problem from an app-specific problem. If the test fails, address the network connection and test again before deleting the app. If it succeeds but one service still fails, continue through the remaining app-recovery steps.
5. Restart the PS5
Restart the console from the PS5 power menu, then launch the service again from Media. A restart is a low-risk step and should be completed before more disruptive recovery actions.

- Media playback controls - Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse buttons.
- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
6. Delete and reinstall the app
- Remove the affected streaming app using the PS5’s app-management controls.
- Return to Media > All Apps or App Library.
- Select the service and choose Download again.
- Open it through TV & Video and repeat the provider’s sign-in steps.
Reinstallation can remove a damaged local app installation, but it does not change the service’s regional availability or restore a subscription that has expired. Keep the account details you need before deleting the app.
7. Restore licenses if access still fails
PlayStation also lists restoring licenses as a recovery step. Use the console’s license-restoration option, then try the app again. This step addresses account and entitlement checks managed by PlayStation; it cannot add a title that the streaming provider does not offer.

8. Use Safe Mode recovery options carefully
If the published sequence has not helped, PlayStation lists clearing the cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Follow the on-screen Safe Mode instructions exactly and select only the recovery option you intend to use. These are console-level maintenance actions, not provider account resets, so you may still need the service’s own support process afterward.
Match the symptom to the right next step
- The app is missing: Check All Apps and App Library, then consider country or region availability. Do not treat a missing listing as an installation error.
- The app is installed but will not open: Check PlayStation service status, update the app and system software, test the internet connection, restart, and then reinstall.
- The app opens but a title will not play: Confirm that you are signed in to the correct provider account and that the title is in the service’s current catalog. Playback instructions vary by app.
- You are repeatedly asked to sign in: Complete the provider’s current account flow and check its support instructions. PlayStation’s general guide does not define every service’s authentication process.
- Live TV works differently from your installed app: Treat Live TV on PS5 as a separate service with its own PlayStation and Sony Pictures CORE account-linking flow.
Parental controls and anime apps
Do not assume that a restriction configured on the PS5 automatically governs every streaming-app catalog. PlayStation warns that parental-control restrictions may not apply to content inside streaming apps.
For age-restricted anime, open the individual service’s account or parental-control settings and review the controls it provides. Apply the service-level restrictions in addition to any console settings, then test the profile that children will use. The exact labels and options belong to each provider and can change independently of PS5 menus.
Use the Media Remote only if it suits your viewing habits
A Media Remote is optional. The installation and playback instructions work with a DualSense controller, and PlayStation confirms that both DualSense and the Media Remote can be used with Live TV on PS5. Consider the remote only as a convenience for frequent media viewing; it is not required to install an anime app or troubleshoot one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical setup checklist
Before you start a show, run through this short checklist:
- Open Media on the PS5 home screen.
- Check All Apps, and use App Library if the service is not in the recent list.
- Download the app if it is listed.
- Open TV & Video and select the service or title.
- Complete the provider’s current sign-in, profile and subscription prompts.
- Confirm that the desired anime is available in your region and in the service’s current catalog.
- If the app fails, follow PlayStation’s order: service status, app update, system update, internet test, restart, reinstall, license restoration, then Safe Mode cache or database maintenance.
- Review the streaming service’s own age restrictions instead of relying only on PS5 parental controls.
This process keeps platform setup, provider account access and catalog eligibility separate. That separation makes it easier to identify whether a missing app, a sign-in request or a playback error needs a PS5 fix or the streaming service’s own support.
