Choose a gaming PC if desktop flexibility and PC storefronts matter most; choose a handheld if portable play is your priority and you can live with device-specific performance and compatibility limits. Microsoft’s announced next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, is intended to play console and PC games, but its retail price, specifications, and release timing have not been established in the cited official announcement. If you need hardware now, compare products currently on sale rather than buying on Helix speculation.

What is known about the next-generation Xbox?

Microsoft calls its next-generation project Project Helix. At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, the company said it is designed to play both console and PC games, as part of a wider effort to make play across devices more seamless. Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of Next Generation, said: “As games increasingly span devices, we’re breaking down the barriers between console and PC games for more seamless cross-device play, and we’re making the Xbox experience consistent across screens,” writes Jason Ronald, vice president of Next Generation at Xbox. Xbox’s GDC announcement describes a direction, not a final consumer product specification.

Microsoft has not established a retail launch date, price, or final hardware specifications in that announcement. Separately, Microsoft and AMD have described a multi-year silicon co-engineering partnership covering a portfolio of devices, including future first-party consoles and cloud. Xbox has also described a broader lineup spanning console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. These statements support an increasingly connected ecosystem, but do not mean every device will share the same games, stores, or capabilities. The partnership announcement does not provide a consumer product comparison.

Microsoft also said Xbox mode, first seen on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, would begin rolling out to Windows 11 in April in select markets. This is a software rollout announcement; it does not establish that Windows PCs will function identically to a future Xbox console. Details and availability may vary by market.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774

How do the three options differ in everyday use?

Option Best fit What to check
Project Helix (future Xbox) You want to wait for Microsoft’s stated console-and-PC direction and prefer to decide once retail details are confirmed. Price, launch timing, specifications, game compatibility, and how the final product handles console and PC libraries are not established in the cited GDC announcement.
Gaming PC You want desktop flexibility and access to PC storefronts. Match the PC’s hardware to the games you play; budget for a display and peripherals if you do not already own them.
Handheld gaming PC You want to play away from a desk, with the option of docked play on a TV on supported setups. Check each game’s handheld compatibility, the device’s performance and battery trade-offs, and whether its controls and screen suit you.

This is a use-case comparison, not a performance ranking: the available official material does not provide a like-for-like benchmark or lifetime-cost test across these choices.

When does a handheld make sense?

A handheld is the clearest fit if you want to play in more places than a fixed desk or TV setup allows. The ROG Xbox Ally is one current example: it is a Windows 11 gaming handheld sold by ASUS and Microsoft, not a proxy for every handheld PC. Xbox says the Ally and Ally X can access Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts through an aggregated library. Depending on device, region, plan, and game, players can play natively, use cloud gaming, or Remote Play from an Xbox console at home. Xbox’s launch announcement explains these options and their supported-device context.

Use compatibility labels as a starting point

Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program uses “Handheld Optimized” and “Mostly Compatible” badges, along with a performance-fit indicator. These signals apply to particular games and supported devices. They can help you screen a library, but they do not guarantee that every PC game will run without configuration or performance compromises on every handheld. Check the specific title and device, and expect that some games may need settings adjustments.

Know what the published Ally figures describe

The Microsoft Store’s U.S. listing for the base ROG Xbox Ally specified a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, 512 GB SSD, 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 60 Wh battery. When accessed on October 7, 2026, the listing showed a starting price of $599.99 and out-of-stock status. That is a dated U.S. store snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or availability. Xbox’s 2025 launch article described an Ally X configuration with 1 TB storage, 24 GB high-speed memory, an 80 Wh battery, and a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. A current Xbox handheld page also displays an ROG Xbox Ally X20 configuration; do not assume that its details match the 2025 Ally X. Verify the exact model and specifications before buying. Xbox’s handheld page lists current configurations and describes docked play and Play Anywhere.

How should you compare games, stores, and compatibility?

Start with the games you actually want to play, then check where you own them and which versions are supported on each device. The Ally’s Windows environment offers access to multiple PC storefronts as well as Xbox features, but an Xbox license is not a universal entitlement to a PC copy. Xbox Play Anywhere carries progress and achievements across Xbox console, PC, the Ally where available, and other Windows handhelds only for supported games. Check the title’s listing rather than assuming cross-buy or cross-save applies to your whole library.

Microsoft has announced a limited PC expansion for four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. In its July 22, 2026 announcement, Xbox said eligible existing digital licenses carry over to PC or handheld for these titles; it also said they were available for purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans at that announcement date. This is a specific initial group, not evidence that the full Xbox back catalog works on Windows. Availability can depend on region and the relevant license or plan. See Xbox’s announcement and requirements.

Interpret PC requirements in context

For those four backward-compatible titles, Xbox listed minimum Windows 11 requirements of 8 GB RAM, 4 GB video memory, and a GPU at the level of Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310. Recommended requirements included 16 GB RAM, 8 GB video memory, and GPUs such as Radeon RX 6800S, GTX 1070 Ti, or Arc A770. These figures apply to that backward-compatibility feature, not to PC games in general. For other games, consult their own requirements.

What should you compare before spending?

Where and how you play

  • Mostly at a desk: a gaming PC is the straightforward option if you want a desktop setup and PC storefronts.
  • On the move: a handheld is built around portability, with battery life and device-specific performance as practical constraints.
  • At a TV: a handheld can support docked play, but that does not establish performance equivalence with a desktop PC or a future Xbox. Confirm the dock and setup suit the specific model.

Performance, screen, and battery

Compare the actual hardware you are considering and the games you play. The base Ally listing provides a 1080p, 120 Hz screen and 60 Wh battery as device specifications, but those figures do not establish how long it will run a particular game or how it compares with a desktop GPU. The cited official sources contain no benchmark of the Ally against a desktop PC or Project Helix.

Upgrade needs and total cost

For a PC, account for the components you need as well as a display and peripherals if they are not already part of your setup. For a handheld, consider storage, a compatible dock or other accessories, and any subscriptions relevant to the games you intend to play. The cited sources do not establish a full ownership-cost comparison, so there is no reliable universal price winner here.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose a gaming PC if desktop flexibility and PC storefronts are central to your decision, and you are ready to select hardware against the requirements of your games.
  • Choose a handheld if portable play is the priority and you are willing to check compatibility, settings, battery, and model-specific trade-offs.
  • Wait for Project Helix details if Microsoft’s intended console-and-PC direction is appealing but you do not need to buy immediately. Make the decision once price, specifications, availability, and game support are confirmed.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
