Choose Retail if you want the modern mainline game and its current expansion story. Choose Classic only after identifying the exact Classic mode you want: Classic is a family of separate experiences, not one game. As of Blizzard’s live lineup checked October 13, 2026, the choices include Classic Era, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery.
Your subscription or game time may already include access to World of Warcraft and several Classic modes. The latest Retail expansion can require a separate purchase, so check the current entitlement details before paying. The safest decision is to match your preferred era and ruleset first, then confirm cost, realm, friends and character-progression rules.

Retail and Classic answer different questions
Retail asks, “What is World of Warcraft now?” It is the current mainline version, with the ongoing expansion story and modern systems. Blizzard describes modern World of Warcraft as including access to past expansions, while its latest expansion is sold separately.
Classic asks, “Which earlier or deliberately altered version do I want?” Blizzard’s current Classic page lists several modes. They have different timelines, rules and goals, so choosing “Classic” without naming a mode is not enough information to make a good decision.

This distinction matters for more than the opening zone. Your character, realm and client can belong to a particular version, and progress is not something you should assume will move freely between Retail and every Classic mode.
What “Classic” means right now
The current lineup is a set of parallel products rather than a single toggle between old and new graphics.

You want modern World of Warcraft rather than a historical ruleset
Choose Retail when your priority is the current design rather than reproducing an earlier game. The relevant question is not whether Retail is “better,” but whether its modern systems are what you want to learn and play.
You want one current destination for your group
If your friends have already chosen Retail, joining them there usually removes the biggest avoidable source of friction: incompatible versions and realms. Confirm the realm and region together before creating characters.

Check the expansion purchase separately
A subscription does not automatically mean that the latest Retail expansion is owned. Blizzard’s current product information identifies the latest expansion as a separate purchase. Verify the edition and entitlement on your account before assuming every Retail feature is available.

Classic Era is the clearest fit for someone who specifically wants an original-era environment rather than the current game. Blizzard describes it as a reset content timeline with a clean-slate economy. Those details are important: the appeal is a defined historical structure and a fresh economic starting point, not merely an old-looking interface.
Pick Classic Era when you can state the desired experience in concrete terms: “I want the Era timeline and economy.” If your reason is instead “I want a Classic mode with new class experiments,” Era is not the obvious match; Season of Discovery is the mode designed around those changes.
Choose Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition or Mists of Pandaria Classic for a particular historical era
Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition
This mode is for players who specifically want the Burning Crusade era in the current Classic lineup. Its name identifies the target period, but it should not be treated as interchangeable with Classic Era, Retail or Season of Discovery. Confirm the live phase, realm availability and character rules before committing to it.
Mists of Pandaria Classic
Mists of Pandaria Classic is the corresponding choice for someone seeking that era’s version of World of Warcraft. As with every Classic offering, check the current phase and realm list first. Your friends’ chosen mode matters more than the word “Classic” on the product page.
For both versions, avoid choosing from memory of a historical launch alone. The current edition, schedule and transfer policies are the facts that determine what you can play today.

Choose Season of Discovery when you want Classic with deliberate changes
Season of Discovery is not simply Classic Era with a different name. Blizzard describes it as adding class-altering abilities, Rune Engraving and additional endgame activities. Those additions change how classes function and what you do at level-cap content.
Choose it if experimentation is a major part of the appeal. It is a poor fit if your requirement is an untouched reproduction of the original rules. Before starting, check which seasonal content and phases are currently active, because a seasonal mode can change over time.
Understand the subscription and expansion costs before you install anything
Blizzard’s official wording is direct: “With a single subscription you can access World of Warcraft and WoW Classic.” Existing subscribers or holders of game time can therefore be eligible for several Classic modes without buying a second base subscription.

That does not make every piece of content free. The latest Retail expansion may require a separate purchase, and the modes included with an account can change. Use this checklist:
- Confirm that your subscription or game time is active.
- Open the current Blizzard World of Warcraft product page and read which Retail and Classic modes are included now.
- Check whether the latest Retail expansion is listed as owned on your account.
- Check the edition, region and account on which you intend to play; entitlements are not useful if they are attached to a different account.
- Do not buy an expansion merely because you want to try a subscription-included Classic mode.
If you already have game time, trying an included Classic mode first can be a lower-risk way to discover whether its pace and rules suit you. If you want current Retail expansion content, budget for the separate expansion purchase.
Plan around separate characters, realms and clients
Blizzard’s February 19, 2021 explanation of Classic and Burning Crusade Classic character choices described characters as remaining in their chosen Classic iteration and identified distinct realms and game clients for the versions. That history supports an important practical rule: do not plan on automatic progress sharing between versions.

Before you invest in a character, read the current transfer instructions for that exact mode. A policy from one Classic launch does not establish every current transfer option, and a transfer—where available—is not the same thing as merging two versions into one character.

- A Retail character is not a substitute for a Classic character.
- A Classic Era character should not be assumed to move into Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition or another Classic version.
- Changing your mind may mean creating a new character on another realm or client.
- Choose your friends’ mode and realm before spending serious time on a character.
A decision process that works for newcomers and returning players
- Write down the experience you actually want. Use a specific sentence: “I want the current expansion story,” “I want the reset Era timeline and economy,” or “I want Classic with altered abilities.” If you cannot complete that sentence, you have not yet chosen between Retail and Classic.
- Name the exact product. Replace “Classic” with Retail, Classic Era, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic or Season of Discovery. This prevents you from comparing one mode’s features with another mode’s reputation.
- Ask your group where it plays. Friends, guilds and scheduled activities require the same mode and compatible realm choices. Treat this as a personal coordination question, not a claim about which version has the largest population.
- Decide how much historical fidelity you need. Classic Era is aimed at a reset original-era structure. Season of Discovery intentionally alters classes and activities. The historical-era Classic versions are separate choices. Retail is the modern path.
- Check account access. Confirm your subscription or game time, the latest Retail expansion entitlement and the current list of included Classic modes.
- Test before making a long-term commitment. If your account includes the mode, create a character and evaluate the actual controls, pace, questing and group availability. Testing cannot make progress portable, so keep the mode and realm decision in mind.
- Read current transfer rules before leveling far. If you might later switch versions, find out what transfers, what stays behind and whether the destination has restrictions.
Recommendations by player situation
“I am new and want to see what WoW is now.”
Start with Retail. It is the current mainline version and the clearest route to the ongoing expansion story. After you understand the basic game, you can try an included Classic mode if a particular era or ruleset appeals to you.
“I played the original game and want that kind of structure again.”
Start by examining Classic Era. Its reset timeline and clean-slate economy directly match that goal. If what you remember is a different historical expansion, identify whether Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition or Mists of Pandaria Classic is the closer match.
“I want old-school foundations but new class possibilities.”
Look at Season of Discovery. Rune Engraving, class-altering abilities and additional endgame activities are its defining reasons to choose it. Do not select it expecting an untouched historical ruleset.
“My friends are split between versions.”
Choose the mode in which you will actually play together, or agree on a primary mode before anyone invests heavily. Separate realms and clients can make an apparently small disagreement impossible to solve by simply logging into a different character.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating Classic as one product
“Classic” can mean Era, a historical-expansion version or Season of Discovery. Always use the full mode name when discussing where you will play.
Assuming every Classic mode has the same rules
Classic Era’s reset timeline is not the same design as Season of Discovery’s altered classes and Rune Engraving. The historical versions are separate products as well.
Assuming progress will follow you
Version-specific characters, realms and clients mean that portability must be confirmed, not imagined. Read the current transfer policy for the exact source and destination modes.

A subscription may already provide the Classic access you want. Check your account and Blizzard’s current entitlement page first; buy the latest Retail expansion only if its content is your goal.
Choosing from population claims
No reliable population, retention or hours-to-level figure establishes a universal winner here. The useful evidence is the mode’s design and your group’s actual choice. Ask your friends which mode and realm they use instead of relying on an unsupported ranking.
Ignoring availability dates
Classic mode lineups and entitlements are live-service details. Recheck the official page on the day you subscribe or purchase, especially if a mode is described as seasonal, anniversary-based or in a particular phase.
Bottom line: decide the experience, then the version
Retail is the right answer for the current World of Warcraft and its active expansion story.
