If progress is missing, check the original computer first, compare local and cloud timestamps in any conflict dialog, and preserve local files before replacing anything. Steam Cloud is game-specific: a Store-page indicator does not promise that every save, mod, or cross-platform session is included.
What Steam Cloud saves actually do
Steam Cloud stores user files selected by a game’s developer and synchronizes those files through Steam. The feature is not a universal copy of every folder a game might use. Developers decide which files are included, how they are named, and whether the implementation works across operating systems. Steam’s developer documentation describes the available Cloud system, while Steam Support explains the player-facing controls and limits.

Look for the Steam Cloud indicator on a game’s Store page, but treat it as a starting point rather than a guarantee that every save is covered. A game can support Cloud while leaving out screenshots, mods, configuration files, alternate profiles, or saves stored in a separate location. Cross-platform continuation is also title-specific: a Windows save may not be usable on macOS or Linux even when both versions list Cloud support. Check the game developer’s support information for the exact files and supported platforms.
Cloud synchronization also depends on Steam being able to communicate with its servers. Playing in Offline Mode leaves a newer save on the current device until Steam reconnects. That gap can produce different local and cloud copies later; it does not, by itself, mean either copy is corrupt.

Check these conditions before you play
- You are signed in to the same Steam account on each computer.
- The game is installed from the same Steam library account and edition. A different launcher, demo, test branch, or non-Steam copy may use different save handling.
- Steam is online when you start and finish a session, unless you intentionally plan to synchronize after reconnecting.
- The game’s Store page lists Steam Cloud support, and the developer documents any platform or save-file restrictions.
- You have not disabled Cloud globally or for this specific game.
- If the save is valuable, you know where the developer says the local files are stored before moving or replacing them.
Enable Steam Cloud for a game
Turn on the global setting
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam > Settings (on macOS, the menu may be labeled Steam > Settings as well).
- Select the Cloud tab.
- Enable Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for the applications which support it, or the equivalent Cloud-synchronization switch shown by your client.
- Close Settings and leave Steam online for a moment so the account setting is applied.
Client labels can change between Steam versions. The important control is the global option in Steam Settings > Cloud; if it is off, a per-game switch cannot make that game synchronize.
Turn on the game’s per-title setting
- Open Library.
- Right-click the cozy game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General page.
- Find the game’s Cloud Synchronization or similarly worded setting and enable it.
- Close the Properties window.
The per-game control can override the global choice for one title. Check both settings whenever a save fails to appear on another computer.

Confirm that the title supports Cloud
Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for the Steam Cloud feature indicator. If it is absent, assume that Steam will not synchronize the game’s saves automatically. If it is present, find the developer’s support notes for the save locations, supported operating systems, and any restrictions on cross-platform use. The indicator confirms that some Cloud integration exists; it does not identify every file included.

Use a safe sync routine after every session
After you finish playing, return to the game’s main menu if the developer recommends doing so, then exit the game normally. Watch the Steam Library entry or Downloads area until Steam reports that synchronization has completed. Do not immediately shut down the computer, kill the Steam process, or launch the title on another device while an upload is still pending.
If Steam says it cannot synchronize, keep the current computer and its local files intact. Resolve the connection or client problem first, or make a manual copy of the save before choosing to launch. Starting with an unsynchronized local file can create a later conflict and makes it harder to tell which session contains the newest progress.
When you deliberately play offline, reconnect to the internet before switching computers. Let Steam process the pending upload while the offline computer is still available. A save made offline may be newer than the copy already stored in Cloud, so the order in which you reconnect devices matters.

Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict without overwriting the wrong session
A conflict means Steam found different changed files locally and in Cloud. Steam cannot infer which play session represents the progress you want, so it displays both versions, normally with timestamps and a device or session description.

Read the conflict dialog
Compare each timestamp with your actual play history. Ask which computer you used, when you last saved, and whether you completed a meaningful event such as a quest, decoration build, or day cycle. The later timestamp is often the desired copy, but the clock alone is not proof: an automatic save can run after you stopped playing, and a device with an incorrect system clock can mislead you.
| What the dialog shows | Choose it when | Risk to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Local files | The current computer contains the session with the progress you want, especially after playing offline. | Selecting it can replace the newer Cloud copy on other devices. |
| Cloud files | The Cloud timestamp matches the latest session you intentionally completed on another computer. | Selecting it can discard unsynced work that exists only on this computer. |
| Neither timestamp is clear | Do not choose immediately. Keep both devices and investigate the local save first. | An uninformed choice can overwrite the only remaining copy. |
Make the choice safely
- Leave the conflict dialog open if possible and note the displayed times and device names.
- If the original computer is available, do not launch the game on the replacement computer yet. Inspect or copy the original local save first.
- Match the timestamps to your play log, achievements, screenshots, or other evidence of which session is current.
- Select the local or Cloud option that contains the progress you want.
- Wait for Steam to report a completed sync before opening the game on another device.
- After the game loads, verify that the expected character, world, or day is present before doing more play.
Do not treat a conflict as proof that one file is damaged. It is Steam’s signal that two changed versions exist and an automatic choice would be unsafe.
Recover missing progress after moving to a new computer
Use this order: verify support and settings, return to the old computer, then investigate non-Cloud saves. Do not uninstall the game or delete userdata while you are still trying to recover a local copy.
- Verify both Cloud switches. Confirm the global Steam Settings > Cloud option and the game’s Library > Properties > General setting. Recheck the Store-page Cloud indicator and the developer’s notes about included files.
- Return to the original computer. If it still contains the progress, start Steam there while online. Let Steam finish any pending synchronization, then close the game normally and wait for the completed status.
- Reopen the new computer only after the upload. Start Steam on the new device, allow the download to finish, and launch the game to verify the restored progress.
- Look for a non-Cloud save path. Some games store saves outside Steam Cloud. Use the developer’s official support page or community instructions for that specific title; there is no universal folder that works for every game.
- Preserve files before replacing them. Copy the existing save directory to another folder or an external destination before importing a different version. Keep the original copy until the game opens correctly.
- Accept the recovery limit. If the save is gone from the old computer, the new computer, and Steam Cloud, Steam Support says it cannot recover it.
Steam’s backup utility does not change this recovery order. It backs up game files for supported titles, but saved games and custom content may be stored separately and require their own copy.

Find local Steam userdata and game-specific saves
Steam’s default userdata locations are useful when you need to preserve a local copy or inspect account and application folders. The exact save file may be elsewhere, so use the game developer’s documented path before moving anything.
| Operating system | Default Steam userdata path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Inside userdata, Steam uses account identifiers and game application IDs. A folder name that looks unfamiliar is not automatically the save you need; identify the title and confirm its documented files before editing.
Steam records Cloud activity in cloud_log.txt under the Steam logs directory. The log can help establish whether Steam attempted an upload or download, but it does not reconstruct a deleted save. Preserve the log and the local save when asking the developer’s support team for help.

Third-party save locations vary widely. A game may use a Documents folder, an application-data directory, a profile folder, or a title-specific location. Copy the complete folder the developer identifies, including files with unfamiliar extensions, rather than selecting only the most recently modified file.

Manual backups and Steam’s Backup Feature
What Steam’s backup tool covers
Steam’s Using the Steam Backup Feature guide explains that the tool creates backup files for game installation data and restores them for supported titles. Valve-created game backups do not include saved games or custom content. Third-party save locations differ, so those files may need to be copied separately into their corresponding folders.
Not every game works with the backup feature. Steam recommends testing a backup you create rather than assuming it will restore successfully. A successful installation restore is not evidence that a missing save was included.
Make a separate save backup
- Exit the game and wait for any Steam synchronization to finish.
- Locate the save directory using the developer’s official instructions.
- Copy the entire directory to a clearly named folder that includes the game and date.
- Store that copy on another drive or a USB flash drive if convenient. The removable drive is only a destination for your manual copy; it does not enable Cloud or resolve a conflict.
- Before importing a backup, copy the current destination folder somewhere else so you can undo the replacement.
- Restore by placing the backed-up files in the exact path the developer specifies, then launch the game and verify the expected progress.
Keep at least one untouched original. If the game updates its save format, an older backup may not load until the developer provides a compatible version, so do not delete newer files during an experiment.
Troubleshoot common Steam Cloud symptoms
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No Cloud option for the game | The title may not support Steam Cloud, or the client may be showing a different layout. | Check the Store page and the developer’s support information. Do not assume a missing switch can be enabled with a launch option. |
| Cloud is enabled globally but not syncing this title | The per-game setting is disabled, or the developer excluded the relevant files. | Recheck Library > Properties > General, then confirm which files the developer includes. |
| Steam reports it cannot sync | A connection, client, or server communication problem prevented the transfer. | Keep the current local files, restore a stable connection, restart Steam if appropriate, and retry before launching on another device. |
| The game opens with an old save | The newer session may still be offline, unsynced, or outside Cloud’s file list. | Check the original computer, Cloud status, and the game’s documented non-Cloud save path. |
| A conflict appears repeatedly | Two devices keep changing their local copies, or a game writes files Steam does not reconcile cleanly. | Stop launching on both devices, record timestamps, preserve both local folders, and ask the developer which files and platforms are supported. |
| Progress transfers between some platforms but not others | The title’s implementation may not support cross-platform saves or may use incompatible file formats. | Verify the exact platform pair with the developer; Steam Cloud support alone does not promise portability. |
| Steam restored the game but not the save | Installation backups and save data are separate, and the game may store saves outside Cloud. | Use the developer’s save path and restore a manual copy, if one exists. |
Cross-platform play: verify the actual implementation
Steam provides Cloud integration tools, but each developer chooses how to use them. Before moving a cozy-game save between Windows, macOS, and Linux, confirm three things: the title lists Cloud support on Steam, the same save files are included on each platform, and the developer says those files are compatible. A platform can download a file successfully while the game ignores it because the format, profile identifier, or version differs.
When the developer documents platform restrictions, follow those instructions over a general Steam workflow. If no cross-platform statement exists, test with a disposable profile or a manual backup first rather than risking a long-running farm, village, or collection.
A practical recovery playbook for a long-running cozy game
Before changing computers
- Finish the current in-game day or reach a deliberate manual-save point.
- Exit normally and wait for Steam’s completed synchronization status.
- Make a separate copy of the developer-documented save folder.
- Record the operating system and game version if the developer lists compatibility requirements.
After an accidental offline session
- Do not open the game on another device.
- Reconnect the offline computer and let Steam upload its files.
- If a conflict appears, use the timestamps and device history to identify the offline session.
- Only continue playing after the selected copy has synchronized.
After choosing the wrong conflict option
- Stop launching the game so no additional save overwrites occur.
- Check whether the other device still has its original local folder.
- Copy every surviving save folder before attempting a restore.
- Ask the game developer for title-specific recovery steps; Steam cannot reconstruct a file that no longer exists in local or Cloud storage.
What Steam Support can and cannot recover
Steam Support explains the Cloud process and can clarify how the system works, but its stated limit is explicit: “Steam Support can provide further clarification on how the Cloud system works, but they cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving cloud conflicts.” That wording appears in the Steam Cloud FAQ.
For a missing or incompatible save, the game developer is the appropriate source for the title’s save path, file format, platform support, and any in-game recovery tools. Provide the developer with the game version, operating system, Cloud status, relevant timestamps, and copies of logs or saves only after removing personal information the developer does not need.
