There is no one perfect game for every parent and child. Start with the kind of time you want to share—building, working through challenges together, friendly competition, or helping a child learn a game—then check whether the specific title supports the play mode, platforms, and number of players your family needs. Minecraft is one well-documented option for open-ended building and multiplayer; for other games, verify the details before you buy.
Choose the kind of shared play you want
A good fit depends as much on how your family likes to play as on a game’s reputation. Use these questions to narrow the field:
- Do you want open-ended creativity? Look for games centered on building, designing, or exploring without a fixed sequence of goals.
- Do you want to cooperate? Check that players can work toward the same objective, rather than merely taking turns or competing.
- Would a little friendly competition be more fun? Confirm whether the game supports the kind of local or online play you have in mind, and whether its pace and controls suit your child.
- Would your child enjoy playing while you help? A game can be a shared activity even when only one person controls it, particularly if the child is still learning to read, navigate menus, or use a controller.
For any candidate, consider the child’s interests and comfort with reading and controls alongside the practical details: local or online multiplayer, player count, compatible systems and editions, controllers, age rating, communication settings, and in-game purchases. Those details vary by title; do not assume that a game’s multiplayer works the same way across every platform.
Minecraft: a documented choice for building and multiplayer
Mojang describes Minecraft as a block-based, expanding 3D world where players decide how to spend their time rather than follow fixed goals. Creative mode focuses on building; Survival mode adds survival mechanics. The publisher’s parent guide describes multiplayer as a way for families to play together both on the couch and from a distance. That makes Minecraft a plausible fit for families who want flexible creative play, though the modes offer different experiences.

These are recommendations from different regional rating systems, not a substitute for checking the rating and content descriptors that apply where you live. Consider the individual child’s maturity and preferences rather than treating an age label as a universal answer.
Check editions before planning multiplayer
Minecraft Java Edition is available on PC, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available on platforms including Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. Java and Bedrock players cannot play together, so confirm that everyone has a compatible edition before arranging a shared session. Platform and service details can change; check current Minecraft support information and account settings when setting up play.

For online play, pay attention to who can join. The ESRB advises: “Parents should monitor which Minecraft server(s) their children are participating in to determine if the user base is appropriate.” The same ESRB article describes private Minecraft Realms as a way to approve who can enter. Review the current options and decide who your child should play with.
Confirm how multiplayer works on your system
“Multiplayer” does not necessarily mean same-screen play, and a game’s feature set may differ by platform. On Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, Nintendo says local multiplayer can work on one compatible system, but whether it does—and how many players can join—depends on the game. Some setups need extra controllers; Nintendo also notes that certain multiplayer modes may require additional games, systems, or accessories sold separately.

ESRB recommends child accounts as an important first step in family gaming safeguards. Depending on the platform, parental controls can help manage games by rating, spending, play time, and online communication. The available controls and their names differ between systems, so consult the relevant platform’s current account and family settings.

For Minecraft or any other game with online play, make a specific plan for who the child may contact and which communities or servers they may join.
