How to Choose Games to Play While You Wait for a Long-Delayed Release

Choose in this order: confirm your hardware and access, set a spending limit, decide how long a session can last, then match your mood and preferred way to play. Start with games you already own or receive through a service you already use. Keep only three candidates, watch a little unedited gameplay if needed, and pick the one whose moment-to-moment play looks best—not the one with the most impressive feature list.

An uncertain delay changes the ideal choice. A compact game with a real ending, or a game built around short repeatable runs, can provide more satisfaction than a 70-hour campaign you feel obliged to finish. The right option depends on your platform, schedule, energy and social plans; there is no universal “best” waiting game.

Why a delayed release calls for a different kind of game

When a date moves, the length of the wait becomes an unknown. That makes flexibility more valuable than raw campaign length. You may have three evenings, three weeks or an entire season before the game you want is ready. A good interim game should still feel worthwhile if the wait ends tomorrow, but it should not punish you if the delay stretches on.

Delays are common enough to justify planning without treating any one forecast as certain. An empirical study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% of the titles in its dataset had a delayed initial release. Among delayed titles, the median delay was 14 days. The share was similar across genres, ranging from 48% to 52%. Those figures describe that Steam sample, published in 2022; they do not predict another delay for a particular upcoming game, and they do not establish the pattern on other platforms.

Think of your choice as a temporary fit rather than a replacement for the delayed game. You are selecting a game that works under your present constraints, not trying to recreate an unreleased experience.

Apply hard limits before personal preferences

Platform, access and budget can disqualify a game immediately. Check those constraints before debating genre, review scores or completion time.

Confirm the hardware and edition

Look at the exact system you will use: console model, handheld, PC operating system or cloud setup. A title may exist on several systems but not on your edition, region or generation. Confirm whether the version you are considering is a native release, backward-compatible version or streaming-only option. If a listing names both PS5 and PS4, for example, verify which version your account or disc provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your installed library, wishlist and any subscription catalog you already pay for. Searching those sources first prevents buying a second game that fills the same role as something you own. If you share a console, include the account that actually has access; family libraries and subscription entitlements are not always interchangeable.

Set a real spending ceiling

Use three buckets: already owned, currently accessible through an existing membership, and requires a new purchase. The first two are your default pool. A purchase is justified only when it supplies a missing fit—for example, a short solo game when your library contains only long multiplayer titles.

Prices, editions and physical stock change by region. Before paying, check the current store page for the correct platform, language, downloadable-content requirements and save compatibility. Do not treat an old catalog mention as a guarantee that the game is still included.

Account for social logistics

Decide whether you will play alone, with someone on the same couch, online with friends or competitively against strangers. A co-op game is a poor waiting choice if your group cannot agree on regular times. Conversely, a solo game can feel flat when the purpose of your gaming time is to maintain a weekly group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Hard limit Question to answer What to do if the answer is no
Platform Does the exact edition run on the hardware you will use? Remove it before comparing anything else.
Access Do you own it or already have catalog entitlement? Check your library and membership catalog; do not assume a past listing remains active.
Budget Does a new purchase fit your stated ceiling? Keep it as a later option, not the default.
Social mode Can the people you want to play with actually join? Choose a solo, local or asynchronous alternative that matches your schedule.

Match the game’s structure to the length of your wait

Total completion time and session flexibility are different measurements. A 10-hour game can be awkward if it saves only between long chapters; a 50-hour game can work well when every mission ends cleanly. Identify the shape of play you need.

Short, complete experiences

Choose this structure when you want a beginning, middle and end before the delayed release arrives, or when finishing one project will feel satisfying. Short does not mean effortless: a compact puzzle game may still demand concentration, while a brief exploration game may invite leisurely detours. Nintendo’s February 28, 2022 roundup defined its selection as games that could be completed in eight hours or less. That is Nintendo’s selection criterion, not a promise that every player will finish each title in eight hours.

Repeatable short runs

Roguelikes, puzzle sessions and other run-based games suit an unpredictable schedule. You can make progress in 15 to 40 minutes, stop without losing the whole evening and return later with a clear objective. The trade-off is repetition: if you need a definitive ending, an endless loop may feel unsatisfying.

Mission-based or chapter-based games

Discrete missions and chapters create natural stopping points inside a longer campaign. They are useful when you expect the delay to last months but cannot reserve marathon sessions. Look for a save system that records completion at the end of each mission, not only at rare checkpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long campaigns with flexible saves

A long RPG or strategy game can be the right choice when you want a second major project and are comfortable abandoning it when the delayed release launches. Before starting, confirm that manual or automatic saves are reliable, that the opening hours are not an unusually long tutorial and that you can remember your objectives after a break.

Structure Best when Main risk
Short complete game You want closure before the date arrives or may have only a few weeks. You may finish before the delay ends and need another choice.
Repeatable runs The wait and your free time are both uncertain. Repetition may not satisfy a player seeking a final ending.
Mission or chapter based You have intermittent sessions but may play for months. A weak save system can make “short missions” less convenient than advertised.
Long campaign You want a substantial project and accept an open-ended commitment. The delayed release may interrupt you before the story is complete.

Choose for tonight’s mood, not just the genre label

Genre is too broad to predict how a game will feel after work or school. Write one sentence describing the experience you want, then use it as a filter.

Relaxing or restorative

Look for low failure pressure, adjustable difficulty, forgiving checkpoints and activities that let you set your own pace. Exploration, decoration and light puzzles can work well, but check footage: a game marketed as cozy may still contain timed sections or combat.

Challenging and focused

Choose a game whose difficulty is intentional rather than one that merely has a high difficulty setting. Ask whether retries are fast, controls are precise and progress is retained after failure. Short attempts are especially useful when your concentration comes in bursts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Story-rich

Check whether the narrative is divided into chapters or requires long uninterrupted scenes. If you regularly stop mid-session, a chapter summary, journal or recap system can prevent the plot from becoming homework.

Creative or expressive

Building, decorating and open-ended tools are good when you want to make progress without following a prescribed route. They are less suitable if you need a clear finish line before the delayed release.

Funny and low-stakes

Comedy-driven games can reset your mood quickly, especially when you do not want another serious story. Humor is personal, so watch several minutes of actual dialogue and play rather than relying on a store description.

Social and competitive

Prioritize the people and schedule first. A technically excellent competitive game will not solve a waiting period if your friends have moved to another title or your connection is unreliable. Verify cross-play, voice-chat requirements and whether progress carries between platforms.

Use a three-game shortlist instead of comparing your entire backlog

Three options are enough to expose the trade-offs without turning the decision into another project. This process works whether your candidates come from your library or from a store.

  1. Write the hard limits. Record your hardware, maximum spend, available access, typical session length and social mode.
  2. Name the desired feeling. Use a phrase such as “quiet exploration for 30 minutes,” “difficult solo runs” or “a funny story I can finish this weekend.”
  3. Pull candidates from owned sources first. Search your installed games, backlog and active catalog. Add a new purchase only if those sources leave a genuine gap.
  4. Keep three structurally different choices. For example, select one short complete game, one repeatable-run game and one mission-based game. Distinct structures make the final decision easier.
  5. Check the first-session friction. Note download size, required updates, account linking, tutorial length and whether a second player must be available immediately.
  6. Watch a small amount of unedited gameplay. Use footage that shows ordinary play, menus and a typical encounter, not only a launch trailer or a late-game montage.
  7. Choose the moment-to-moment winner. Start the candidate whose movement, interface and basic actions appeal most. Do not keep researching after one option clearly fits.

A simple scoring sheet can prevent one spectacular feature from hiding a deal-breaking problem:

Criterion Question Suggested score
Access Can I play it now without an unplanned purchase? 0–2
Session fit Can I stop cleanly within my normal session? 0–2
Mood fit Does its actual play create the feeling I want? 0–2
Social fit Does its solo, co-op or competitive mode match my plans? 0–2
Commitment Can I pause or abandon it without feeling I wasted the purchase? 0–2

Use the scores to expose a mismatch, not to manufacture a precise ranking. If two games tie, choose the one you can launch immediately.

What to look for in gameplay footage

Five minutes of ordinary play can answer questions that screenshots cannot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How long does it take to reach interactive play after launching?
  • Can you pause, save or quit at the end of a typical encounter?
  • Does the camera, text size or motion look comfortable on your display?
  • Are failures quick to retry, or do they require replaying a long section?
  • Does the basic action—moving, aiming, arranging, fighting or solving—look enjoyable before upgrades and story rewards?

Skip footage that is heavily edited, consists only of cutscenes or shows a late-game build. You are testing the first hours and the ordinary loop, because that is what you will repeat while waiting.

Example fits for different kinds of waiting

These are illustrations of fit, not a universal ranking. Confirm the current platform, edition and access in your local store before installing or buying.

A Short Hike: contained exploration

Nintendo describes A Short Hike as a peaceful exploration game about hiking, climbing and discovering a mountain landscape. Nintendo included it in its list of games completable in eight hours or less. It is a useful model for a player who wants a self-contained adventure with room to wander and no expectation of a months-long commitment.

Unpacking: quiet puzzles with a narrative thread

Nintendo describes Unpacking as a block-fitting puzzle and home-decoration game that tells a story through eight house moves. It suits a player who wants a calm, tactile activity and a clear sequence of spaces rather than combat or competitive pressure. Its chapter-like moves also provide obvious stopping points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Donut County: playful, lightweight sessions

Nintendo describes Donut County as a comic puzzle game about a raccoon using a remote-controlled hole, and included it in the same short-game roundup. It demonstrates the value of a concise, humorous option when you want a change of tone rather than another serious epic.

Blue Prince: repeatable runs with deeper optional mysteries

PlayStation describes Blue Prince as a game of short runs through a changing manor. A run can end with puzzles solved and clues gathered, while deeper mysteries can keep you playing longer. That combination illustrates flexible commitment: you can make progress in a short session without treating every evening as a major story appointment. PlayStation’s January 2026 guide identified it as a PS5 PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title at publication; membership and catalog availability can change, so check the current listing.

Earth Defense Force 5: discrete missions for short bursts

PlayStation says Earth Defense Force 5 has more than 100 missions and that each can be enjoyed in a few minutes. That mission structure fits a player who wants action in small blocks and does not need to finish a campaign before the delayed release. The cited catalog listing covers PS5 and PS4; verify the edition and present access for your account.

While Waiting: a thematic curiosity, not a default recommendation

Nintendo lists While Waiting as a puzzle game for Switch released on February 5, 2025. Its central idea is that doing nothing and waiting is the strategy. It is an adjacent example for readers interested in the theme itself, not a claim that it is the best game for every long delay. Optillusion founder Dong Zhou described the inspiration this way: “We want to create a game from every mundane moment, to help players find their own ways to kill time.”

Example Useful fit Structure to verify
A Short Hike Peaceful, contained exploration Short complete experience; confirm local platform listing.
Unpacking Quiet puzzle and environmental storytelling Eight house moves provide chapter-like progress.

Earth Defense Force 5 Action in brief mission-sized bursts More than 100 missions; PS5/PS4 listing and access must be checked.

Turn an overwhelming backlog into a usable menu

If you are asking, “How do I decide what game to play next from my backlog?”, do not sort by release date or by the largest discount. Tag each unplayed title with four practical labels: platform, session shape, mood and social mode.

Then remove anything that fails your current hard limits. From what remains, pick one title for each of three situations: a 20-minute night, a relaxed weekend and a session with friends. You are not promising to finish all three. You are building a menu that reduces the next decision.

Keep the menu temporary. If the delayed release receives a firm date, or your schedule changes, retag the options rather than forcing yourself to continue a poor fit.

Purchase and catalog checks before you commit

Do a final verification immediately before spending money or scheduling a group session:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the store page names your exact platform and generation.
  • Check whether the listed price is recurring, promotional or tied to a particular edition.
  • Verify that a subscription catalog still includes the game in your region and that your membership tier grants access.
  • Check download size, required storage, online-service requirements and update size.
  • For physical games, verify that the disc or cartridge is compatible with your hardware and that the language or region meets your needs.
  • For multiplayer, confirm cross-play, player count, subscription requirements and server status.

These checks are especially important for older roundup articles and catalog guides. Availability can change even when the game itself has not.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by total hours alone

Problem: A long advertised campaign looks like better value, but you cannot find a comfortable stopping point. Fix: inspect mission length, save behavior and chapter breaks.

Buying before checking your library

Problem: You purchase a short puzzle game while an equivalent title already sits unplayed. Fix: search owned and active-catalog games first; buy only to fill a specific gap.

Confusing a trailer with ordinary play

Problem: Cinematic footage hides repetitive tasks or awkward controls. Fix: watch an unedited first-session segment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting a social game without a stable group

Problem: Progress depends on friends who are unavailable during the same window. Fix: choose solo or drop-in modes, or agree on recurring times before installing.

Trying to predict the delay precisely

Problem: You select a game on the assumption that the launch will be exactly two weeks late. Fix: choose a structure that remains satisfying if the date moves again.

Forcing yourself to finish

Problem: The interim game becomes an obligation and makes the original wait feel longer. Fix: give yourself permission to stop when the delayed release arrives or when the fit no longer works.

A quick decision path

  1. Can you play it now on your current hardware? If not, remove it.
  2. Do you already own it or have catalog access? If yes, place it ahead of an unplanned purchase.
  3. Will your next session be under an hour? Favor short missions, runs or a clear chapter.
  4. Do you want closure? Choose a contained game; if not, consider repeatable runs or a long campaign.
  5. What feeling are you seeking? Remove games whose ordinary play contradicts that mood.
  6. Will anyone else play? Confirm the people, platform compatibility and schedule.
  7. Which of the remaining three looks most enjoyable minute to minute? Start it and stop comparing.

FAQ

Is a short game always better for a long delay?

No. A short complete game is best when you want closure, while repeatable runs or mission-based games are better when the delay and your available sessions are unpredictable. A long campaign can also work if you welcome an open-ended project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I avoid starting a game I might not finish?

Only if unfinished stories bother you. Choose a game with reliable saves and independent missions when you want the freedom to pause it without losing context. Treat the purchase as entertainment consumed before the delayed release, not as a completion contract.

How much gameplay footage is enough?

Usually a few minutes of unedited footage showing ordinary movement, menus and one typical encounter. More footage rarely helps once you know the controls, pacing and visual presentation suit you.

Can the Steam delay statistics tell me how long my game will be delayed?

No. The 48% rate, 14-day median and 48%–52% genre range come from a 23,485-game Steam dataset studied in 2022. They describe historical observations in that sample, not a forecast for a named release or another platform.

What if none of my three candidates feels right?

Return to the hard limits and change one variable deliberately: lower the commitment, switch mood, allow a different social mode or define a small purchase gap. Do not expand the list indefinitely; rebuild three options around the new constraint.
