Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To choose an open-world game with less mature content, decide which material matters to you, then check the exact game’s official age rating, content descriptors and—when available—full rating summary. Treat online features as a separate consideration: they can affect the experience, but they do not change the content rating.
Start with the content you want to avoid
“Less mature” is not one universal standard. One player may mainly want to avoid sexual content or strong language; another may be concerned about realistic violence, blood and gore, substances or gambling. Write down your own boundaries before comparing games so you can assess each listing against the same concerns.

- Violence: consider both its intensity and how realistic or graphic it appears.
- Blood and gore: distinguish their presence from violence generally.
- Sexual content, nudity and suggestive material: check each separately where the rating information distinguishes them.
- Language and humor: decide whether strong language or crude humor is a concern.
- Substances and gambling: look for those descriptors if they matter to you.
- Online interaction: consider contact with other players, user-created content, purchases or internet access separately from mature content.
Use the age category as a first screen, not a verdict
In the U.S. ESRB system, Teen is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. A Teen-rated game may include violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent strong language. Mature 17+ may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language. These broad categories signal different possible levels and kinds of content, but they do not settle every personal boundary: a Teen rating does not mean a game is free of all mature material, and a category alone does not tell you how much of a specific concern appears.
Read the category alongside its descriptors. ESRB explains that “Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.” They are useful screening clues, not a complete inventory of a game’s content. See the ESRB ratings guide and its rating information.
#1 Best Overall
Read descriptors, then look for a fuller summary
Scan the descriptors that match your boundaries—such as violence, blood/gore, language, nudity, sexuality, substances, gambling or humor. A descriptor tells you that a type of content may be present or relevant to the rating; it does not necessarily explain its context, frequency or severity. ESRB states that descriptors are not intended to provide a complete listing of content.
For many physical games, open the ESRB Rating Summary for more detail and context. You can search ESRB’s ratings database or use its mobile app. Digital games rated through the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) process do not have ESRB Rating Summaries, so a listing may offer less detail. ESRB describes its rating process and summary availability in its ratings process information and ratings guide.

Check online and interactive features separately
ESRB interactive-element notices can disclose user interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases or unrestricted internet access. These notices are not content descriptors, and ESRB says interactive elements do not influence the rating assignment. A game with a rating that fits your content preferences may still have online features you want to manage.
Device parental controls can help households enforce preferences by blocking games based on rating, limiting play time, managing purchases or restricting internet access. The available controls and labels vary by device; consult the platform’s settings for the system you use. ESRB outlines these options in its parental controls guide.

Verify the exact game, edition and region
- Search the official rating database for the exact title, checking the platform or edition if the listing distinguishes them.
- Confirm that the rating applies to your region. Rating categories and systems differ between countries, so a U.S. ESRB entry should not be treated as a global rating.
- Compare the age category and relevant descriptors with the boundaries you set, rather than relying on the category alone.
- Open the Rating Summary if one is available; if there is no summary, make your decision with that information gap in mind.
- Review online-feature notices and decide whether to adjust the device’s parental controls.
For the question “Which open-world games have less violence or sexual content?”, this process is more dependable than assuming the genre predicts the answer. Open-world describes a game structure, not a content rating. A current recommendation also needs an up-to-date check of the specific game’s official listing; ratings and available details should not be generalized across editions or regions.

ESRB credits Hart Research Associates’ 2025 findings that 83% of parents with children who play video games are aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly check ratings before buying a game. Separately, ESRB reports that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. These figures describe awareness, checking habits and ratings across games; they do not measure open-world titles or identify which games suit a particular player’s content preferences.
