Start with the device you own, then decide whether the added drive needs to run games or mainly hold them for storage and transfer. A PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S use different expansion paths, so the right storage choice depends first on compatibility—not on a single speed figure or capacity recommendation.

Choose for your platform and intended use

Before comparing capacities or prices, answer two questions: Which gaming device will use the drive, and do you want to play games directly from it? A drive suited to one platform may not work as an internal expansion drive on another. Even when an external drive is supported, its role can differ from that of the console’s dedicated expansion option.

  • For a Windows PC: choose between an SSD and HDD based on the games you play, the drive connection your PC supports, and whether you need quick access or lower-cost space for less-used files. NVMe is specifically required for games that use DirectStorage; it is not a blanket requirement for every PC game.
  • For PS5: the internal expansion route is a compatible M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD. A USB drive is a separate external-storage route; check PlayStation’s current guidance for what it supports and how it differs from internal expansion.
  • For Xbox Series X|S: a Storage Expansion Card and a USB external HDD are distinct options. Microsoft says the expansion cards match the internal SSD’s performance and lists USB 3.1 external HDD support. Check current, game-specific rules before assuming a title can run from USB storage.

These are not interchangeable shopping categories. Confirm the interface and use case for your exact device before buying. PlayStation’s storage overview covers PS5 and PS4 storage options; Microsoft’s Xbox Series X information describes its expansion path.

A useful way to compare the options is to keep the intended job in view. A PC owner may be choosing a drive to install and launch games, or adding secondary space for files and less-used titles. A PS5 owner must distinguish the internal M.2 expansion slot from external USB storage. An Xbox owner must compare the dedicated Storage Expansion Card with USB external HDD support. In each case, the supported format comes before capacity: first eliminate drives that cannot serve the intended role, then compare the remaining choices.

SSD or HDD: which makes sense for gaming?

Microsoft Support characterizes SSDs as “smaller and faster than hard disk drives (HDDs).” That makes an SSD a sensible choice when you want a compact, responsive drive for games you access often. An HDD can be useful when your priority is adding secondary capacity for files or games you do not need to launch directly from that drive. The right choice depends on the job, the device, and the drive it supports—not on a universal rule that every game must be installed on the fastest storage available.

For a PC, decide which games you want immediately available and which can live on secondary storage. For consoles, do not transfer that PC decision directly: use the platform’s compatibility guidance to distinguish drives intended for running games from those intended for external storage or transfers. A USB connection alone does not establish that every console game can be played from the attached drive.

Sequential read speed by itself is not a universal predictor of gaming performance. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a feature intended to let games use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs for high-bandwidth small reads with minimal CPU overhead. That benefit applies to games built to use the feature, not automatically to every title installed on an NVMe drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

So, should you get an SSD or HDD for gaming? If the priority is games you access often and a compact, faster storage option, an SSD is the relevant category to compare. If you primarily want additional capacity for less-used files or games, an HDD may suit that secondary-storage role where your device supports it. This is a purpose-based comparison, not a promise of a specific loading-time difference: the official material here does not establish a universal uplift or make every game’s performance depend on one drive specification.

Also distinguish a drive’s advertised sequential-read number from the way a game actually uses storage. DirectStorage is designed around high-bandwidth small reads and reduced CPU overhead, but a game has to use the feature for its specific behavior to matter. A high headline number alone does not show that a particular title will use DirectStorage or benefit from a particular drive. Match the drive to the platform and the title’s supported features rather than paying for a speed label without a defined need.

When does a PC need NVMe for DirectStorage?

Microsoft’s published DirectStorage requirements specify an NVMe SSD to store and run games using the Standard NVM Express Controller driver, plus a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. These requirements apply to games using DirectStorage. They do not mean every gaming PC needs a particular NVMe generation, or that every game gains a measurable benefit simply by moving to NVMe.

If DirectStorage is a deciding factor, check the game’s own feature support and verify the PC against Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements. Microsoft’s DirectStorage documentation explains the feature’s intended use. Treat compatibility with the feature as a specific requirement, rather than buying a premium drive on the assumption that its headline sequential-read figure will speed up all games.

For a practical check, work through the requirements in order:

  1. Check the game. Confirm that the game actually uses DirectStorage. If it does not, the feature-specific requirement does not create a reason to buy NVMe for that game.
  2. Check the storage and driver. For a game using DirectStorage, Microsoft specifies an NVMe SSD and the Standard NVM Express Controller driver.
  3. Check the graphics hardware. Microsoft also specifies a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support.

These are stated requirements for the feature, not a complete recommendation for every PC build. The material does not specify that every game needs a particular NVMe generation, nor does it establish that buying a more expensive drive will produce a fixed speed increase. If DirectStorage is not part of the games you play, choose a drive based on your broader storage needs and PC compatibility instead.

What storage works with PS5?

Internal M.2 expansion

PS5 has an M.2 SSD expansion slot. Sony’s compatibility criteria specify a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD. Interface compatibility is only part of the decision: verify the drive’s dimensions and heatsink fit against Sony’s current instructions and the exact PS5 model you own. A drive that matches the interface but does not fit the console as required is not a suitable choice.

Use Sony’s M.2 installation and compatibility guide before purchase and during installation. Check the current criteria there rather than relying on an old product description or a general claim that an SSD is “for PS5.” The console-specific guide is the authority for fit and installation details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are shopping for a PS5-compatible SSD, treat the product label as a starting point, not a substitute for checking Sony’s criteria. Confirm the PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe interface, then compare the listed dimensions and heatsink arrangement with the console’s current guidance. This avoids a common mismatch: choosing a drive with the right broad type but overlooking whether its physical form fits as required. Follow Sony’s installation instructions for your model rather than adapting a procedure intended for another device.

External USB storage

External USB storage is another PS5 and PS4 storage category, but it is not the same as adding an internal M.2 drive. Consult Sony’s storage solutions guide for current compatibility and use details. If an M.2-installed game has an issue, Sony says it can be moved to internal console storage; that provides a fallback without treating every drive-related issue as a reason to replace the SSD.

When comparing PS5 expansion choices, ask whether the goal is internal expansion or external storage. The M.2 route has Sony’s specific interface, size, and heatsink-fit criteria. External USB storage is its own supported category with its own use details, so do not assume it behaves like an installed M.2 drive. If a game on the M.2 drive causes problems, Sony’s guidance says it can be moved to the console’s internal storage. That is a useful troubleshooting option to keep in mind when deciding how to organize installed games.

What storage works with Xbox Series X|S?

Storage Expansion Card

Microsoft describes Storage Expansion Cards as matching the internal SSD’s performance. Choose this route when you want the console’s dedicated expansion option, and verify the current compatible product and console guidance before purchasing. Do not treat a generic internal PC NVMe drive as a substitute for the specified card format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dedicated card is the distinct option to compare when matching the internal SSD’s performance is important. It is not interchangeable with a standard PC NVMe drive simply because both involve solid-state storage. Confirm that the product is the specified Storage Expansion Card for the console, then compare its capacity and current price with the needs of your library.

USB external HDD

Microsoft also lists USB 3.1 external HDD support. This is a separate option from a Storage Expansion Card, so decide based on the games you intend to keep there and whether you need to launch them from the drive. Microsoft’s support for the drive type does not establish that every game can play from USB; consult the current rules for each title before planning your library around that assumption. The Xbox product information for the Series X console describes the expansion options.

In other words, decide whether the USB drive is intended mainly as extra storage or whether you expect to play particular games directly from it. Verify the current rule for each title before relying on direct play. If you are comparing Xbox routes, the card’s stated performance match and the USB HDD’s listed support describe different choices; neither should be treated as a generic promise about every title’s behavior.

How much capacity should you buy?

There is no single ideal capacity supported for every gaming setup. The useful amount depends on the size and number of games in your own library, how many you want installed and ready at once, whether the drive is for active play or archiving, and what fits your budget. Avoid choosing solely from a generic “best size” recommendation that does not account for your platform or habits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List the games you want installed at the same time. Use your own library and the space those titles require on your device; the official compatibility guidance does not establish a universal game-size average.
  2. Separate active games from archive games. If you want to launch games from the added drive, choose a platform-compatible route intended for that role. If you mainly want a place to keep less-used games or files, check whether an external drive fits that purpose on your system.
  3. Allow for how you actually manage the library. A smaller addition may work if you regularly uninstall or transfer games; a larger one may better suit a library you want available without frequent changes. This is a personal trade-off, not a fixed capacity rule.
  4. Compare local prices for compatible options. Compare the purchase price against the usable capacity and intended role, then account for any physical fit or installation requirements. Prices vary by market and date; the cited platform guidance does not establish a current price or cost-per-capacity winner.

Cost comparisons only help after compatibility is settled. Compare like with like: an option intended to play games directly is not automatically equivalent to an option used chiefly for storage or transfers. Check the price of compatible choices where you shop, calculate the cost per usable capacity if that helps, and weigh it against how often you expect to use the added space. There is no fixed price or capacity winner that applies across PC, PS5, and Xbox; local prices and product availability change, and the right trade-off depends on your purpose.

For example, a player who keeps a small set of active games installed may be comfortable uninstalling or transferring titles as needed. Someone who wants a broader library available at once may value a larger addition. Neither pattern produces a universal capacity target: estimate from the titles and habits you actually have, then compare compatible options within your budget.

Check fit, installation, and compatibility before checkout

Storage problems often start with buying the wrong format, not with a drive failing after installation. Use this pre-purchase checklist:

  • Confirm the exact platform and console or PC model.
  • Match the supported interface and drive type to that platform; do not assume a PC SSD is the correct console expansion drive.
  • Decide whether you need direct game play, secondary storage, or a place to keep games for later transfer.
  • For PS5 M.2 expansion, check the current PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe criteria, dimensions, and heatsink fit in Sony’s installation guide.
  • For Xbox USB storage, verify game-specific play rules instead of inferring them from USB HDD support.
  • For DirectStorage on PC, confirm that the game uses the feature and that the PC meets Microsoft’s stated storage, driver, and graphics requirements.
  • Compare price only among options that meet the compatibility and use requirements you actually need.

For console installation, follow the platform maker’s current instructions for your model rather than extrapolating from another model or from a PC drive installation. If you are unsure whether a specific drive fits or a game can run from it, verify those details before buying; the broad label “external SSD” or “gaming drive” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid relying on a single detail from a product listing. A speed number cannot establish console compatibility; “NVMe” alone does not make a PC drive an Xbox Storage Expansion Card; and a USB connection does not prove that a console title can be played from the drive. For PS5 M.2, the interface and physical fit both matter. For DirectStorage, the game, driver, and graphics requirements matter together. Check the relevant platform guidance and game-specific information rather than assuming one claim answers all of these questions.

Common storage-buying mistakes

  • Choosing by speed headline alone: a maximum sequential-read figure does not predict every game’s load or performance, especially when the game does not use the storage feature associated with that figure.
  • Assuming all NVMe drives are console expansions: PS5 specifies an M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe route with fit requirements, while Xbox uses its own Storage Expansion Card option for that role.
  • Confusing supported USB storage with guaranteed direct play: platform support for an external drive type is not a promise that every game can run from it. Check current game-specific rules.
  • Buying capacity before defining the use: capacity for a frequently played installed library and capacity for archiving are different needs. Pick the role and platform first, then compare costs.
  • Ignoring physical fit: on PS5, verify dimensions and heatsink clearance using Sony’s current guide rather than relying on a broad compatibility claim.

Another easy mistake is assuming a platform-wide statement settles a particular game’s behavior. Xbox USB HDD support, for example, is not the same as a rule that every game can be played from USB. Likewise, DirectStorage’s requirements apply to games using that feature, not to every PC title. Keep the distinction between device support and game support clear when you shop.

A practical decision path

For a PC, choose an SSD for games you want on fast storage, consider an HDD for secondary capacity if that suits your setup, and buy NVMe specifically when compatibility or DirectStorage support calls for it. For PS5, use Sony’s criteria to select an M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD for internal expansion, or assess external USB storage separately. For Xbox Series X|S, choose between the dedicated Storage Expansion Card and a USB external HDD based on the game-specific rules and role you need. In all cases, capacity and price come after compatibility and intended use.

In short, start with the device, define whether you want to play from the added storage or use it as secondary space, and then narrow the choices to supported formats. Check fit and installation details where they apply, confirm game-specific rules for external console drives, and size the purchase around the library you want available. Only after those checks should headline speed or price decide between the remaining options.

Should I get an SSD or HDD for gaming?

Microsoft Support describes SSDs as smaller and faster than HDDs. An SSD is a sensible category for games you access often; an HDD can suit secondary capacity for less-used files or games where your device supports that role. Neither choice guarantees a specific loading-time improvement for every game.

Can I add an SSD to my PS5?

Yes. Sony provides an internal M.2 expansion slot and specifies a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD. Check Sony’s current guide for the exact console model, drive dimensions, heatsink fit, and installation instructions before buying.

What storage works with Xbox Series X|S?

Microsoft describes Storage Expansion Cards as matching the internal SSD’s performance and also lists USB 3.1 external HDD support. These are different options; verify current compatibility and game-specific rules before assuming a game can be played from USB storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play games from an external drive?

It depends on the platform, drive type, and game. External storage is not automatically equivalent to a console’s dedicated expansion option, and USB support alone does not show that every game can run from USB. Check the platform’s current guidance and the rules for the specific title.

Does every PC game need an NVMe SSD?

No. Microsoft’s NVMe requirement is specific to games using DirectStorage. That feature also specifies the Standard NVM Express Controller driver and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. Check whether the game uses DirectStorage rather than assuming every title requires it.

The Bottom Line

Choose gaming storage by platform and purpose, not by speed headline alone. Confirm compatibility and fit, decide whether you need direct play or mainly extra space, then size the drive to your own library and compare current local prices. PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S have distinct storage paths, and external-drive support does not guarantee every game can run from that drive.
