The right next step depends on what you are trying to change. An item-specific store suggestion, the contents of your browsing-history list, a personalized ad, and the history saved by a browser are different things. Amazon documents separate controls for them, and changing one should not be treated as changing all the others.

Choose the control that matches what you want to change
Amazon’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026, says it uses personal information to recommend products and services, identify preferences, and personalize the Amazon experience. It states: “We use your personal information to recommend features, products, and services that might be of interest to you, identify your preferences, and personalize your experience with Amazon Services.” The notice identifies Your Browsing History and Improve Your Recommendations as account settings customers can manage. It does not describe one master switch that turns off every recommendation based on browsing activity.

This difference in scope matters. The recommendation toggle is for an individual item; browsing-history controls manage the history list; advertising choices concern personalized ads; and Silk private tabs concern local browser history after the tab closes. Amazon also describes signing out and blocking cookies as a way to browse without linking browsing history to an account, but warns that rejecting cookies can interfere with shopping functions. That option has a different scope and usability cost from the account controls.
Exclude an item from Amazon recommendations
- Sign in to the Amazon account whose recommendations you want to change. Recommendation settings are account controls, so make sure you are using the right account. If more than one person or account uses the device, check that the account currently signed in is the one whose suggestions you are trying to change.
- Open Improve Your Recommendations. Look for the item you do not want used to shape recommendations. Amazon documents this setting by name; the account page’s layout or route may change. Use the named setting rather than relying on an old set of screen-by-screen directions.
- On that item’s page, uncheck Use this item for recommendations. Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers can remove recommendations they do not want to see by unchecking that toggle on the right side of the page for each item.
- Repeat for other items you want to exclude. The documented instruction is per item; do not assume changing one item excludes other viewed or purchased items.
This is the clearest documented action for an unwanted product suggestion tied to a particular item. Amazon describes its effect as removing recommendations you do not want to see. The notice describes a toggle for each item, so if there are several items you do not want used for recommendations, handle each one separately. Do not interpret the per-item control as a blanket switch for your whole account.
The wording also describes a recommendation effect, not comprehensive deletion. Unchecking the setting does not come with a statement that Amazon has erased every record of the item, removed it from every system, or stopped using all other information to personalize the store. If your goal is to change what appears in your visible history list as well, manage that list separately under Your Browsing History.

Amazon’s notice says the toggle is on the right side of the item’s page, but account pages can change. If the page looks different, look for the named item setting and confirm that the recommendation toggle is unchecked. Do not assume that merely opening the item, removing it from a visible list, or changing an ad preference has changed this particular recommendation setting.
Edit the items in Your Browsing History
- Sign in to the relevant Amazon account.
- Open Your Browsing History from the account or browsing-history area.
- Find the viewed item you want to manage, then use the control displayed on that page.
Amazon confirms that customers can edit browsing history, but its Privacy Notice does not give the exact button wording or specify the full effect of removing a history entry. The history list and the recommendation toggle are distinct settings: if you want a particular item excluded from recommendations, use the per-item control in Improve Your Recommendations as well. Page labels and layout can vary, so follow the named settings rather than relying on a fixed click sequence.

That distinction answers a common practical question: is removing an item from browsing history enough to keep it out of recommendations? The notice confirms the ability to edit the history and separately documents the recommendation toggle. It does not say that editing the list automatically unchecks the recommendation setting for that item. For the most direct documented action on recommendations, check the item in Improve Your Recommendations and turn off Use this item for recommendations.
Likewise, the notice does not promise that using a history-page control erases every underlying record of a visit. It establishes that customers can edit the browsing-history list, but does not spell out the exact removal button, the consequences for retention, or an all-data deletion effect. Use that control for the history list itself; avoid assuming it is a full account-data deletion tool.

If the suggestions are advertisements, change the ad setting
Product suggestions shown as part of shopping and personalized advertisements are not the same setting. For personalized advertising, use Your Ads Privacy Choices. For a product you do not want used for store recommendations, use Improve Your Recommendations. Changing an ad preference is not a substitute for excluding an item from recommendations, and the recommendation control is not documented as a way to manage personalized ads.
When you are unsure which kind of content you are seeing, first note its context: is it presented as a product recommendation within the Amazon store, or as an advertisement? The setting names Amazon provides are a useful guide. Use the advertising choice for the advertising concern and the item-level recommendation toggle for an unwanted product recommendation. You may need to manage both separately if your concern involves both kinds of personalization.
What signing out and blocking cookies can—and cannot—do
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says that to browse its websites without linking browsing history to an account, you can sign out and block cookies in your browser. Amazon also warns that rejecting cookies can prevent use of the shopping cart, checkout, and services that require sign-in. This is a broader and more disruptive browsing choice than excluding a specific recommendation item.

- Use account controls first if you only want to manage particular items or suggestions.
- Consider signing out and blocking cookies if your aim is to avoid linking browsing history to your account while browsing. The trade-off is that shopping functions may not work as expected.
- Do not treat cookie blocking as a universal privacy guarantee. Amazon’s statement concerns linking browsing history to an account; it does not promise that no website or service can observe browsing activity.
Cookie blocking is not a simple replacement for the recommendation controls. Amazon’s notice pairs the option with an explicit usability warning: rejecting cookies can prevent cart use, checkout, and services that require sign-in. If you rely on those features, blocking cookies may make ordinary shopping harder. The notice does not say that this choice edits items already listed in Your Browsing History or changes a previously selected item in Improve Your Recommendations.
The narrower account controls are usually the more targeted choice when the problem is a particular item or suggestion. The sign-out-and-cookie option addresses whether browsing is linked to an account while you browse, as Amazon describes it, rather than being a documented way to clear all prior activity. Keep the difference in mind: a browsing choice going forward is not the same as editing an existing history list or changing the recommendation setting for an item.
Amazon Silk private tabs are a separate layer
Amazon’s Silk guidance says pages visited in private tabs are removed from Silk’s local browsing history after the tab closes. Downloads and bookmarks remain, and visited websites or your internet provider may still be able to observe activity. That is a browser-history behavior, not evidence that an Amazon account’s recommendation inputs have changed. If an Amazon account recommendation is the problem, use the account settings above rather than relying on a private tab.
In other words, Silk private browsing is about what Silk keeps in its local history after you close the private tab. It does not undo activity already associated with an Amazon account, and the available guidance does not say that it changes the account-level recommendation setting. Private tabs also do not mean that every trace disappears: files downloaded and bookmarks created remain, and the websites visited or your internet provider may still see activity.
Do not confuse this Silk-specific information with a general promise about every browser or device. The documented behavior concerns Amazon Silk private tabs.
