For a first Resident Evil Requiem playthrough, choose Casual if you are new to the series or want aim assistance and less combat friction; choose Standard (Modern) for a conventional starting point; choose Standard Classic if you want save-resource tension and are comfortable managing ink ribbons during Grace’s sections. Your preferred camera perspective is a separate choice: the game lets you switch between first- and third-person views in real time.
Which difficulty should you choose?
| Setting | What is established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Includes aim assistance. Capcom describes it as suitable for people new to Resident Evil and survival horror. Capcom’s difficulty announcement | Newcomers, players who prefer less combat friction, or anyone prioritizing story and puzzles. |
| Standard (Modern) | Confirmed as a difficulty setting. Xbox Wire writer Mike Nelson described his playthrough as balanced, with ammunition and healing items reasonably plentiful; that is one player’s account, not a guarantee for every run. Xbox Wire | Returning players who want a standard starting point without choosing Classic specifically for its save rule. |
| Standard Classic | When playing as Grace, saving at typewriters requires ink ribbons. Capcom presents the setting as a more intense option for players familiar with the genre, with save timing and resource management part of the challenge. Capcom’s difficulty announcement | Survival-horror fans who enjoy planning when to save and weighing ink ribbons against other resources. |
These names do not establish a precise numerical ranking or prove that one setting is harder in every combat parameter. Choose based on the specific pressures you want: aim support, the Classic save-resource rule, and your appetite for tension.

Choose Casual if you want help with combat
Casual is the clearest option if this is your first Resident Evil game, aiming under pressure is not enjoyable for you, or you would rather focus on exploration, puzzles, and story. Capcom specifically says aim assistance helps newcomers take down enemies more easily. That is a concrete reason to pick it, rather than a promise that every part of the game becomes effortless.
Choose Standard (Modern) for a conventional first run
If you know the series and want a middle-ground starting point, Standard (Modern) is a reasonable editorial recommendation. Mike Nelson’s Xbox Wire account of his playthrough calls it balanced and says ammunition and healing items felt reasonably plentiful. Treat that as an individual experience, not a measured comparison or assurance about what you will find.

Choose Standard Classic for save-planning tension
The distinguishing point established for Standard Classic is its save rule during Grace’s sections: typewriter saves require ink ribbons. You must decide when a save is worth spending that resource, adding planning to the survival-horror loop. Capcom positions the setting for players who already know the genre and want a more intense experience. Choose it if that deliberate pressure sounds appealing; avoid it if limited save resources would make the game frustrating.
Pick your camera view separately
Resident Evil Requiem supports switching between first- and third-person perspectives in real time. Capcom describes the option as a way to suit different play styles; it is a separate preference from choosing a difficulty. Nelson also observed that third person can improve situational awareness, particularly when avoiding detection, but that is a practical observation from his playthrough rather than a difficulty-setting rule.
