The right Minecraft server hosting plan in 2026 starts with three choices: Java or Bedrock, the server software you will run, and the number of players and mods you need to support. For a small vanilla Java world, a fast CPU and 2–4 GB of allocated RAM is usually a sensible starting range. A Paper server with plugins for 10–30 players generally needs about 6–8 GB, while demanding modpacks or a public network may require 8–16 GB or dedicated hardware. These are planning ranges, not guarantees: vendor sizing guides disagree, and your view distance, redstone activity, chunk generation, plugins and backups can change the result.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide explains how to choose a plan, how much RAM a Minecraft server needs, when Java or Bedrock is the better fit, how many players a server can handle, and which provider details to verify before paying.

Start with Java or Bedrock server software
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server software and are not directly compatible. Pick the edition your players actually use before comparing hosting plans.
Java Edition
The official Java server software is free, but it requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to launch the server JAR. Java is the usual choice for PC communities that want extensive modding, plugins, custom server software and mature administration tools. Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge each have different performance and memory characteristics, so name the software and Minecraft version when asking a host for a quote.

Bedrock Edition
The official Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is the straightforward route for Windows, mobile and console players. Bedrock commonly uses less memory than Java at the same player count, but add-ons, redstone-heavy bases and high simulation distances can still create substantial CPU load. BDS uses UDP rather than Java’s TCP connection and normally listens on IPv4 port 19132.
Java with Bedrock crossplay
A Java server that accepts Bedrock clients through a bridge such as Geyser should be sized for the Java workload first, then given additional CPU and RAM headroom. The exact overhead varies with software, plugins and player behavior; no dependable universal percentage is established. Crossplay also adds another component to maintain when Minecraft versions change.

Mojang does not publish CPU or RAM requirements for the Java server. Mojang’s Java system-requirements article describes the game client instead: 8 GB of system memory with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics and a four-core processor. Those client figures are not server-sizing requirements.
A community server- requirements reference lists 1 GB as the minimum allocation for a Java server to run. Its Java tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server and notes that larger servers may need 4 GB. Commercial hosting guides provide broader, conflicting ranges, so treat the following as starting points to test rather than promises.
| Workload | Planning range | What changes the requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Java or Paper, 1–10 players | About 3–4 GB | View distance, exploration that generates new chunks, farms and peak concurrency |
| Paper or Spigot with common plugins, 20–50 players | About 6–12 GB | Plugin count and configuration, entities, redstone, chunk-loading plugins and scheduled tasks |
| Forge or NeoForge modpacks | Commonly 8–12 GB even with a modest player list | Modpack loader, Java version, client-side requirements and the heaviest individual mods |
| Large public server or proxy network | About 8–16 GB or more, often split across instances | Multiple game modes, proxies, minigames, databases and traffic spikes |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Plan around 4 GB | Mojang’s requirements box lists 4 GB, while its FAQ says at least 1 GB for small servers; the two official figures conflict |
Allocate a 20–30% buffer above the working target for the operating system, scheduled backups and busy sessions. A plan advertised as 4 GB that leaves no practical headroom can perform worse than a slightly larger plan with a faster processor.
Measure before upgrading
Watch memory usage during your busiest normal session, after players explore new terrain and while backups run. Sustained near-capacity usage, Java out-of-memory errors, long garbage-collection pauses or a server that stops responding are signs to increase memory or reduce load. Do not use RAM as a cure for a slow single thread: a weak or throttled CPU can cause tick lag while plenty of memory remains unused.

How many players can a Minecraft server handle?
There is no reliable player number that applies to every plan. “Slots” sold by a host are a configuration limit, not a performance guarantee. Ten idle players in an established area are much easier to serve than ten players flying in different directions and generating chunks with a large modpack.
- For friends on vanilla Java, up to about 10 players, start with 2–4 GB and a high-clock CPU.
- For Paper with plugins and 10–30 active players, about 6–8 GB with fast storage is a practical starting range.
- For 20–50 players with many plugins, plan toward 6–12 GB and test the heaviest features before opening the server publicly.
- For large modpacks or a network of modes, start around 8–16 GB or use separate instances and consider dedicated hardware.
- Bedrock-only groups can often use a smaller plan than an equivalent Java group, but add-ons, simulation distance and redstone activity determine the actual limit.
Ask a host whether its advertised player count is based on dedicated CPU time, a fair-share environment, a particular view distance or a specific server build. A provider that cannot explain those assumptions is not giving you a meaningful capacity figure.
CPU matters more than core count
Most Minecraft server work depends heavily on one main thread. Several hosting guides therefore prioritize high single-thread clock speed over a large core count. Their cited targets range from 2.5 GHz or higher, with 3.0 GHz or higher preferred; one guide recommends 3.5 GHz or higher for Paper, Purpur, Fabric or NeoForge. These are vendor targets, not an official Mojang specification.
The server typically uses no more than about three cores for its principal work, although plugins, networking, backups and auxiliary services can use additional cores. Check whether the host assigns a dedicated vCPU, a guaranteed CPU share or a fair-share slice. A “four-core” plan with aggressive contention may be slower than a two-core plan on a less crowded machine.
Reduce CPU load before buying more resources
- Set view distance and simulation distance to roughly 8–10 as a starting point; lower them if tick time remains high.
- Pre-generate important terrain so players are not creating chunks during peak play.
- Audit entity-heavy farms, hopper systems, redstone clocks and plugins that run frequent scans.
- Use a performance-oriented server build appropriate to your mods and plugins, and keep it updated only after checking compatibility.
Storage: choose NVMe and budget for growth
NVMe storage shortens world-load and save operations and helps with backups, region-file access and modded startup times. No dependable universal disk allowance was established for Minecraft worlds: size depends on explored terrain, dimensions, backups and logs. A community tutorial suggests reserving at least 5 GB for the world itself, but that is a floor, not a complete plan.
Calculate storage as current world data plus at least one complete backup, several rolling snapshots, logs and temporary files. Check whether the host counts backups against your quota and whether snapshots are stored on the same machine. For BDS, Mojang’s official requirements list approximately 180 MB to 1 GB for the software itself; worlds and backups require additional space.

Bandwidth, ports and latency
A community guideline for Bedrock Dedicated Server suggests about 5 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download per 10 players. It is a rule of thumb rather than a guarantee and should not be treated as a Java measurement. Actual traffic varies with movement, chunk transmission, view distance and player count.
Home connections are a weak choice once a group grows beyond roughly 20 players. Hosting guides commonly cite home upload limits of 10–50 Mbps, with other household traffic competing for the same connection. A data centre near most players usually matters more than raw bandwidth: lower latency makes block placement and combat feel more responsive.
Recommended Free Tools
Confirm whether the plan includes a dedicated IPv4 address, which ports are open, whether UDP is supported for Bedrock, and whether the address and port remain unchanged after an upgrade. Java commonly uses TCP; BDS normally uses UDP port 19132 over IPv4.
Java versions and operating-system requirements
Match the Java runtime to the Minecraft release. Minecraft 1.20.5 and later require Java 21, while Minecraft 26.1 and later require Java 25, according to the Minecraft community reference. A host should let you select or update the runtime without replacing your world.
For Bedrock Dedicated Server on Linux, Mojang officially requires Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. Verify the operating system image before ordering; a generic Linux plan may not meet that requirement. Also check whether the provider supplies automatic updates, a console, file access and a way to roll back after an update breaks a mod or add-on.

| Workload | Indicative monthly price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 players with light plugins | About $7–$10 | Vendor VPS guide; volatile pricing |
| 10–20 players on Spigot or Paper | About $15–$20 | Vendor VPS guide; depends on CPU share and storage |
| 30–50 or more players with large modpacks or proxies | $40 or more | Vendor guide; configuration and dedicated resources vary |
| Dedicated hardware | About $80–$100 per month upward | Vendor estimate; hardware, location and bandwidth alter the total |
Compare the resources behind the price, not just the monthly number. A cheap plan with oversubscribed CPU, slow disks, no usable backups or expensive overage fees can cost more after an outage or forced upgrade.
Provider checks before you pay
- Confirm resource guarantees. Ask whether RAM is dedicated, whether CPU is dedicated or fair-share, and what percentage or number of vCPUs is guaranteed to your instance.
- Verify software support. Check the exact Java versions, supported Minecraft releases, mod-loader choices, Bedrock UDP support and whether you can upload custom JARs or add-ons.
- Check network location. Choose a data centre close to the majority of players and ask about included bandwidth, DDoS filtering and IPv4 availability.
- Inspect storage and backups. Confirm NVMe or equivalent, disk quota, backup frequency, retention, restore fees and whether backups are kept on separate infrastructure.
- Ask about upgrades and migration. Get written confirmation that your IP and port can remain the same, and that the world can be downloaded if you move providers.
- Test support. Ask a technical question before ordering. A provider that offers responsive 24/7 live chat can reduce downtime during a failed update, but verify what “24/7” actually covers.
- Read renewal and cancellation terms. Promotional pricing may not recur, and storage, additional IPs, backups or overages may be billed separately.
A practical plan-selection workflow
1. Write down the real workload
Record edition, Minecraft version, server software, expected simultaneous players, modpack or plugin list, desired view and simulation distances, and whether the server is private or public. Include crossplay, scheduled backups and map pre-generation if you need them.
2. Choose a conservative starting tier
Use the RAM table as a starting point, add 20–30% headroom and prioritize a high-clock CPU and NVMe storage. For a small private Java server, 2–4 GB can be enough; for plugins or modpacks, begin in the appropriate higher range rather than trying to stretch a minimal plan.
3. Benchmark the stressful scenario
Invite the expected number of players, travel in different directions, trigger your busiest farms and run a backup. Observe tick time, CPU saturation, memory, disk latency and network behavior. A quiet spawn area is not a useful capacity test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Tune settings before scaling
Lower view or simulation distance, remove problematic entities and adjust plugin settings if the workload is CPU-bound. Increase RAM only when memory pressure is the limiting factor. If one instance remains overloaded, split game modes or services instead of endlessly increasing a single plan.
5. Document recovery
Download a test backup, perform a restore on a separate instance and record the Java version, server build, mods and configuration. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Common mistakes and fixes
Buying by player slots alone
Symptom: The plan promises many slots but lags with a small group. Fix: Ask for CPU allocation, clock speed, storage type and the workload behind the slot count; reduce distances and test under exploration load.
Adding RAM to solve every lag problem
Symptom: More memory does not improve tick rate. Fix: Check single-thread CPU usage, entity counts, redstone and plugin timings before upgrading RAM.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring the Java runtime
Symptom: The server fails to start after changing Minecraft versions. Fix: Select Java 21 for releases from 1.20.5 onward, or Java 25 for 26.1 and later, and verify mod compatibility before switching.
Underestimating backups
Symptom: The world fills the disk or backups stop during peak play. Fix: Count world, snapshots, logs and temporary files in the quota; retain off-machine copies.
Hosting far from players
Symptom: Block actions feel delayed despite adequate CPU and RAM. Fix: Move to a nearer data centre or choose a provider with a better route to your region.
Recommended starting points by use case
| Use case | Start with | Upgrade trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Private vanilla Java, up to about 10 players | 2–4 GB, high-clock CPU, NVMe | Memory pressure, chunk-generation lag or sustained CPU saturation |
| Paper plugins, 10–30 players | 6–8 GB, guaranteed CPU share, NVMe | Plugin tick time, entity load or peak-session memory use |
| Heavy Forge or NeoForge pack | 8–12 GB minimum starting range, fast CPU and ample disk | Loader startup failures, garbage-collection pauses or mod-specific lag |
| Bedrock-only group | Plan around 4 GB, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later on Linux, UDP support | Add-on, simulation-distance or redstone load exceeds CPU capacity |
| Public network or proxy | 8–16 GB or more across multiple instances; consider dedicated hardware | Separate modes, databases and proxies as traffic grows |
The decision in one sentence
Choose the edition first, size RAM for the actual software and peak workload with a 20–30% buffer, prioritize a fast and fairly allocated CPU, use NVMe and adequate backup space, then verify Java or Bedrock compatibility, network location, upgrade behavior and support before committing to a host.
