For a self-hosted RLCraft server, use the RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3, Minecraft Forge for 1.12.2, and Java 8. Do not install the regular client pack on the server: it contains client-only mods that can stop the server during startup. Install Forge in a clean directory, extract the server pack over it, accept the EULA, assign memory in a start script, and make every player install the identical RLCraft version.

The exact Forge build for v2.9.3 is not confirmed by a primary release note, so verify the build named by the server-pack files or README rather than assuming a number from a third-party guide. Java 17 and Java 21 are not suitable for the 1.12.2/legacy-Forge stack according to setup guides; use Java 8 and confirm the executable before troubleshooting anything else.

What an RLCraft server consists of
RLCraft is a modpack, not a single server jar. A working installation has four pieces that must agree:
- Minecraft: 1.12.2.
- Forge: the 1.12.2 server loader required by the pack.
- RLCraft: release v2.9.3, the release listed for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Java: Java 8 for this old Forge and mod combination.
CurseForge lists both the normal client release and a separate file named RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip. Download the server-pack file for the machine that will host the world. Players use the client pack, but their pack version must still be v2.9.3 if the server is v2.9.3.

Server pack versus client pack
The client archive includes rendering, interface, and other client-only mods. A dedicated server cannot load those mods and commonly stops with a “server-only” or “client-side mod” error. The server archive removes those components and supplies the files intended for Forge’s server environment. If you accidentally began with the client archive, start again in a clean folder instead of trying to delete mods one by one; manual removal can leave an incomplete or inconsistent installation.
Hardware and memory planning
No official RLCraft organization publishes a definitive RAM requirement. Existing setup guides disagree, so treat their figures as starting estimates and monitor the server’s memory use and tick performance while players explore.

These are not performance guarantees. More RAM cannot compensate for a slow CPU, a saturated host, or a badly configured Java process. Watch tick rate (TPS), pauses in the console, and operating-system memory use. Giving Java nearly all physical memory can make the machine less stable, so leave a safety margin for the operating system and any backup or monitoring tools.
Install the server step by step
1. Install and verify Java 8
- Install a 64-bit Java 8 distribution. One commonly suggested option is Eclipse Temurin 8, but any compatible Java 8 runtime is acceptable.
- Open a new Command Prompt or shell and run
java -version. - Confirm that the result identifies version 1.8 (often displayed as 1.8.0_xxx). If it reports Java 17 or 21, change the system PATH or call the Java 8 executable explicitly from your start script.
Different Minecraft packs may need newer Java releases. Do not change the whole machine to Java 17 or 21 merely because another pack uses it; point this server’s script directly at Java 8 instead. A Java-version error is often the reason an apparently complete server closes immediately.
2. Create an empty server directory
Make a dedicated folder with no old mods, configs, worlds, or jars in it. Keeping one pack per folder prevents files from a previous installation being loaded accidentally and makes backups and upgrades easier. Use a local drive with reliable read/write access rather than a synchronized cloud folder.

3. Install Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2
- Download the Minecraft Forge 1.12.2 installer that matches the server-pack instructions.
- Run the installer and select Install server.
- Choose the empty directory you created. Forge will place its libraries, launch files, and server jar there.
The exact Forge build for RLCraft v2.9.3 is not established by a primary release statement in the available documentation. A third-party guide recommends build 14.23.5.2860 or newer, but that recommendation is not independently confirmed here. Use the build named by the pack’s current README or file description; if the pack supplies a Forge jar or installer, prefer that over a guessed build.

- Download RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip from the server-pack entry, not the client profile.
- Extract every file into the same directory where Forge was installed.
- When the extractor asks whether to overwrite files, allow it. The server pack is designed to add or replace the configs, mods, scripts, and libraries needed by RLCraft.
Do not mix files from another RLCraft release. Even a minor difference in a mod jar or configuration can produce a login mismatch later.
5. Accept the EULA and perform the first launch
- Run the Forge server once. The first run may stop after creating
eula.txtand other initial files. - Open
eula.txt, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree to it. - Start the server again and wait for the console to finish loading. This creates the world, configuration files, and logs.
- Stop it cleanly with
stopbefore editing settings or copying a backup.
Starting once before making extensive changes is useful because it separates installation errors from configuration errors. If no EULA file appears, inspect the console for a Java, permission, or incorrect-jar problem rather than repeatedly launching the same command.
6. Create a start script and set memory
Use a script so the Java version, memory limits, and server jar are consistent every time. Replace the jar filename in the examples with the Forge jar actually created by your installer.
Windows (start.bat):

java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar nogui-Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. The 4G/6G values are examples within the published guide ranges, not universal requirements. For a small private server you might start lower; for five to ten active players you may test 6–8 GB and increase only when monitoring justifies it. If the machine has multiple Java versions, replace java with the full path to the Java 8 executable. On Linux, make the script executable with chmod +x start.sh.

Configure server.properties
After the first successful launch, stop the server and edit server.properties with a plain-text editor. The following values are reasonable starting points reported by setup guides; they are not official RLCraft defaults.

Save the file while the server is stopped. Many properties are read only at startup, and edits made while the process is running can be overwritten when it exits.
Generate the world before inviting players
RLCraft’s custom structures and terrain can make first-time chunk generation CPU-intensive. If your host has the capacity, pre-generate the area where players are likely to build before opening the server publicly. Pre-generation reduces the chance that several players exploring in different directions will all trigger expensive generation at once. The exact pre-generation method depends on the tools included in your installation; follow the pack’s documented procedure rather than installing an arbitrary world-generation mod from another version.
Keep command blocks enabled if you are following the guide recommendation that some structures may not generate without them. Test a freshly generated area before relying on a structure for a planned base or adventure route.
Let players connect
- Give players the server address and port supplied by your network or host.
- Have each player install the RLCraft client profile for release v2.9.3.
- In Minecraft’s Multiplayer screen, choose Add Server, enter a name, enter the address, and save.
- Connect only after the server console reports that it has finished loading.
Every player must run the same Minecraft version, Forge line, RLCraft release, and mod files as the server. A client on another RLCraft release can reach the address successfully and still be rejected during login with a missing-mod or version-mismatch error.

Basic administration routine
Use the console safely
Issue stop before shutting down the host, copying a world, or replacing files. Abruptly killing the Java process risks losing recent world changes. Common access-management commands include whitelist on, whitelist add playername, whitelist remove playername, and op playername. Grant operator status only to people you trust because it gives them powerful in-game commands.
Back up the right files
With the server stopped, copy the world folder together with the RLCraft configuration and mod files that define the installation. Keep dated backups outside the live directory and test that an archive can be opened before deleting older copies. Back up before changing Forge, updating the pack, installing an administrative mod, or allowing a large group to explore new terrain.
Update deliberately
Do not overwrite a running v2.9.3 server with files from a different release. Stop the process, take a complete backup, read the target release notes, update the server files, and have every client update to that same release before reconnecting. Keeping an untouched copy of the previous folder gives you a rollback path if a mod or configuration change prevents startup.
What changed in RLCraft 2.9.3
Release v2.9.3 is described as a minor update for Minecraft 1.12.2. TickProfiler was removed; it was a debugging tool and its removal does not change ordinary gameplay. CarryOn, ShieldBreak, and RLMixins were updated. The listed gameplay and exploit fixes include:
- Atomic Deconstructor behavior on bosses was fixed.
- Stonelings can no longer be picked up through CarryOn.
- Parasite Armor now reduces Fear and Viral effects to level 1.
- Several duplication exploits were addressed.
These changes are another reason not to mix client and server files from neighboring releases: a player with older mod jars may be rejected or experience behavior different from the server.

Troubleshooting an RLCraft server that will not start
The window closes immediately
Launch from a command prompt or the start script so the error remains visible. Check, in order, that the command is calling Java 8, that the Forge jar filename is correct, that eula=true is present, and that the script is running in the directory containing the Forge libraries and server files. A client pack in place of the server pack can also cause an immediate client-only-mod error; rebuild the folder with the dedicated server archive.
Java reports an unsupported version
If the console mentions class-file versions, modules, or an unsupported Java release, run java -version from the same script context. The shell may be finding Java 17 or 21 even when Java 8 is installed. Correct the PATH or call the Java 8 binary by its full path, then launch again from a new terminal.

Forge or a mod is missing
Confirm that Forge was installed with Install server into the intended empty folder and that the server-pack archive was extracted there afterward. Re-extract the v2.9.3 server pack and allow overwrites. Do not copy individual mods from a client directory. If a loader error names a specific Forge build, compare it with the build required by the current pack files or README; the 14.23.5.2860 recommendation found in one guide is not a verified universal requirement.
Players receive a version or missing-mod error
Compare the client and server release labels first. Both must be RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3, with matching Forge and mod lists. Have the affected player remove the old profile and install the correct client pack rather than manually replacing one jar. The server console usually identifies the first mismatched mod, which helps distinguish a stale client from a broken server installation.
The server runs out of memory or lags during exploration
Observe Java’s heap use and tick performance while reproducing the problem. Reduce view-distance, limit simultaneous exploration, and pre-generate important areas. Increase -Xmx gradually within the guide estimates—about 4 GB for one to three players, commonly 6–8 GB for five to ten, and occasionally 10–12 GB for a heavily loaded group—only if the host has spare physical memory. If TPS remains poor while heap use is moderate, adding RAM is unlikely to solve a CPU-bound generation workload.
Structures do not appear
Check that the world was generated after the RLCraft server files were installed, that command blocks are enabled if you are following the structure-generation recommendation, and that you are not testing in a world created by another modpack. Existing chunks generally do not regenerate simply because a setting was changed; test in new terrain or a fresh backup world.

Using a one-click hosted installation
If you do not want to manage Java, Forge, and files manually, Pine Hosting documents a one-click route: open its control panel, select CurseForge in the Modpack tab, locate RLCraft, and click Install. Confirm which RLCraft release the panel installs before players connect, because the client still has to match the server exactly. A hosted panel does not remove the need for backups, whitelist administration, or log review, and its available Java and memory controls may differ from a self-hosted machine.
