Build the hero who solves your account’s next specific problem—not simply the one with the strongest reputation. Identify the activity holding back your progress, check what role your roster lacks, then compare each candidate’s access, development cost, and gear fit. That gives you a repeatable priority you can revisit as your account changes.
1. Identify the bottleneck your next hero needs to solve
Start with the activity you want to make progress in, such as assembling an early Hunt team or advancing another PvE system. A hero is a good investment when they help with that job now. A unit who is powerful in a different mode may be a poor use of scarce materials if they do not address your current hurdle.
Make the goal concrete: name the stage, team role, or fight that is giving you trouble. Then judge candidates by how directly they help with it. Reassess when you clear the hurdle; the best next investment can change with your account.
2. Check roster coverage before choosing a candidate
For the activity you named, work out which role is missing: damage, a soul weaver, a tank, or utility. Compare that need with what your current team already does well. If an existing hero handles a role adequately, building another hero for the same job may be less valuable than filling a real gap.

When two candidates seem plausible, compare them against the same questions:
- Which one addresses the current bottleneck more directly?
- Does either fill a role your roster lacks, rather than duplicate an adequate unit?
- Is one already owned or available through a Connection or progression reward?
- Can you afford their promotion, awakening, and skill development without stalling another priority?
- Can you equip them for the job with gear you can actually assemble?
3. Consider accessible heroes for early progression
For newer accounts, community starter guides put free and Connection heroes and Hunt progression near the front of the path. One September 2026 starter guide gives an Ice Hunt example involving Furious, Sigret, Alexa, and a suitable soul weaver. In that example, Furious is a Connection defense-break anchor, Sigret is an Ice damage dealer from Hunt missions, and Alexa is a three-star Ice option. Treat this as an example for an early Hunt goal, not a universal lineup or a guarantee that each hero is currently obtainable; check the game’s current in-client information.

Access matters because a hero you can obtain through progression may be a more practical investment than a harder-to-get alternative. The starter guide distinguishes Selective Summon, Connection, and Hunt-mission access, so compare the route to each candidate as well as their role. Recommendations and availability can change with balance updates, events, and account progress.
4. Add up the full development cost
Promotion is only one part of building a hero. The October 2026 beginner guide describes MolaGora skill-ups as a resource to use carefully and recommends feeding Penguins to heroes you plan to build rather than using useful heroes for EXP. Development also draws on distinct materials and competing account resources:

- Overall readiness: gold, energy, equipment charms, and suitable gear.
Before committing, look beyond whether you can promote a unit: ask whether you can also level, awaken, skill up, and equip them enough to contribute. The development materials are not interchangeable, so having enough of one does not mean you can finish the build.
5. Make sure the gear is realistic
Gear is part of the investment, not an afterthought. The October 2026 gear guide describes six equipment pieces per hero and explains that main stats and variable substats affect a build. Compare candidates against equipment you can actually put together for the target activity; a theoretical endgame setup does not help if your account cannot support it yet.

A hero may look like the right role on paper but still be a weak immediate choice if gearing them would leave another team unfinished. Consider whether your available pieces can support the job you need, rather than judging the hero in isolation.

When resources are tight, turn the choice into one clear next action: decide which hero gets the next promotion, skill materials, and equipment. Avoid spreading scarce upgrades across several candidates before any of them can do their intended job. Once the bottleneck changes, repeat the same checks with the new goal.

For early accounts, that may mean following a Hunt-focused progression path if Hunt is the current obstacle. For another roster, an existing team may already cover that activity and need a different role. The right priority comes from your account’s actual gap, not a fixed six-star order or a tier-list ranking.
