Build the characters who fill a real gap in a team you can field and enjoy—not whoever sits highest on a generic tier list. Choose one or two targeted upgrades that address your current bottleneck, then widen your roster once your core team is working. There is no universally correct first character: the best choice depends on your roster, goals, available materials, and preferences.
Start with the team’s biggest gap
Before spending materials, identify what is holding your current team back. It may need more damage, healing, shielding, elemental application, energy support, or another specific contribution. Then look at the characters you own and want to play, and ask which one can address that need in a team you can actually assemble.
A character’s value is contextual: role, compatibility with your available characters and weapons, and your intended content matter more than a ranking that assumes a different account. If you are choosing between two appealing options, compare them directly:

This is a practical comparison framework, not a published scoring system. If the candidates are otherwise close, preference matters: resources spent on a character you enjoy are more likely to support the teams you keep using.

Check the full cost before you commit
Character development has separate levers: character level and ascension, weapon level and ascension, artifacts, and talents. They do not all need equal investment at once. Choose the next upgrade according to the character’s role and the weakness you are trying to fix.
HoYoverse’s Training Guide, introduced in Version 4.5, provides character-specific suggestions for levels, weapons, artifacts, and talents. Its announcement says recommendations for characters below level 90 depend on ascension status. Treat those suggestions as a starting point, then account for your team and goals.
Before committing, check what the character and their weapon will require. HoYoverse’s Help Center says, “Leveling up character talents requires a combination of specific items from various sources.” Its talent guide, updated September 17, 2025, explains that talent books come from Domains of Mastery, whose materials rotate by day; higher talent levels can also require specific weekly and elite boss drops. The talent materials guide also notes that the Adventurer’s Handbook can help locate bosses.
Weapon upgrades have their own costs: weapon ascension materials, common and elite enemy materials, Weapon Enhancement Ores, and Mora. Weapon ascension materials come from Domains of Forgery, which rotate their offerings; enhancement ores can be crafted at the blacksmith or obtained through expeditions. The weapon upgrade guide, also updated September 17, 2025, describes these requirements and says the Adventurer’s Handbook can track enemy locations.

Mora is shared across upgrades, so include it in the decision rather than counting only character-specific drops. HoYoverse lists Blossoms of Wealth, daily commissions, quests, the Battle Pass, and limited-time events among its sources. For routes, HoYoverse recommends the HoYoLAB Teyvat Interactive Map; check the in-game schedule and Adventurer’s Handbook for current domain days and enemy locations.
Prioritize the upgrade that solves today’s problem
Once you have picked a candidate, identify the smallest useful investment that improves the team. If the character needs a stronger weapon to contribute, focus there; if their role depends on a talent, plan the materials for that talent; if survival is the team’s problem, prioritize the relevant level, equipment, or support contribution. Avoid treating every build category as an equal checklist.

A resource-conscious build can also define a stopping point instead of chasing maximum investment immediately. For example, a Version 5.5 HoYoLAB community guide for Xianyun described a budget setup at level 80/80 with talents at 1/8/8, and excluded weapon recommendations available only from the limited weapon banner. That is an example for Xianyun in that version—not a universal target for other characters or current builds.

Talent-book and weapon-material domains have day-by-day rotations, and some higher talent levels call for boss drops. Match your farming plans to the materials you need rather than spending resin without a target. The in-game schedule, Adventurer’s Handbook, and interactive map can help organize domains, bosses, enemies, and routes.
Build breadth after a core team works. A HoYoLAB beginner guide published in 2022 recommends focusing resources on several preferred characters before building others as lineups and updates call for them. The enduring idea is concentration, not any version-specific details in that older guide: invest enough to make a useful group function, then add characters when your roster or goals create a reason.

- Name the gap: Decide what your current team needs most, such as damage, healing, shielding, elemental application, or energy support.
- Choose a usable fit: Compare candidates by team role and compatibility with the characters and weapons you already own, while accounting for which one you enjoy.
- Price the commitment: Check ascension, talent, enemy, weapon, and Mora costs before starting a build.
- Pick one targeted upgrade: Improve the part of the build most directly connected to the team’s current weakness; do not assume every system needs equal investment immediately.
- Farm with the calendar: Use the in-game schedule and Adventurer’s Handbook for rotating domains and enemy or boss locations, and plan routes with the Teyvat Interactive Map.
- Reassess before expanding: Once the core team can do its job, decide whether another character would solve a new need or whether the current roster needs a further focused upgrade.
Domain schedules and game systems can change in later updates, so verify current in-game availability when planning a specific farm.
