Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo claim a Rockstar Activation Code, sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher with the account that should receive the game, open your avatar menu, and select Redeem Code. Enter the code, choose Check, review the listed content and account, then confirm with Redeem. Rockstar says the code is one-time-use and permanently applies to the signed-in account, so verify the account before submitting. These steps apply to Rockstar Activation Codes, not automatically to every Steam, console, or reward code.
Redeem a Rockstar Activation Code
- Download and install the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account that should receive the game or content.
- Click your avatar in the upper-right corner and choose Redeem Code.
- Enter the Activation Code and select Check.
- Review the content shown and make sure the signed-in account is the one you intend to use.
- Select the confirmation checkbox and click Redeem.
- Look for the redeemed game under Games in the Launcher.
A valid internet connection is required. Rockstar’s redemption instructions were last updated October 4, 2024.
Check the code type before using these steps
“Rockstar code” can refer to different things. The Launcher steps above are for a Rockstar Activation Code. If your code was issued for a console or another store, use that platform’s redemption process rather than assuming it belongs in the Rockstar Launcher.
Steam and other PC installations
Rockstar says Steam installations added to the Launcher are installed and updated through Steam, which must be running for updates. Its support guidance also describes certain non-Steam L.A. Noire installations that can be added to the Launcher library by entering the Activation Key under Redeem Code. These are specific installation cases, not a universal redemption method for Steam or console codes. See Rockstar’s guidance on adding games to the Launcher.

Account-linking rewards
Rewards earned through Rockstar account linking are separate from Activation Code redemption. Rockstar’s account-linking rewards FAQ, last updated May 28, 2026, describes rewards tied to linking platform accounts and meeting eligibility conditions.
What to do if redemption fails
The code is rejected
Check the characters you entered, then use the Launcher’s Check step again. Make sure the Launcher has an internet connection; Rockstar lists a valid connection as a requirement for redemption.

You think the code was already redeemed
Sign in to the Rockstar account that may have received it and check Games. Rockstar says a redeemed code cannot be used again or transferred to another Rockstar Games account. If you have access to more than one account, check each one before concluding the code is missing.
Launcher error 16
Rockstar lists a required Activation Code redemption as one possible cause of error 16, alongside pending game or Launcher updates and an incomplete installation. Check for updates and, where applicable, verify the game files using Rockstar’s error 16 troubleshooting guidance.

Contact the store or retailer where you bought it through that seller’s official support channels. Rockstar recommends contacting store management or the retailer’s customer support, but does not promise a particular replacement, refund, or resolution time. See its missing Activation Code support article.
You are installing from a PC disc
Some PC disc editions have game-specific activation requirements. For example, Rockstar’s L.A. Noire PC disc instructions say Launcher activation is required to complete installation, after which the game can be downloaded and installed. Check the instructions for your particular edition rather than applying an older disc procedure to a different game. See Rockstar’s L.A. Noire PC installation instructions.

Older PC editions may have different code locations
For specified historical editions, Rockstar documented that some Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City codes were on the back of the game manual or in Steam. Its GTA IV PC disc guidance also describes some copies not previously activated through Games for Windows Live that could use the manual code to activate and upgrade through the Launcher. These instructions concern particular editions and circumstances; they should not be treated as the current process for every Rockstar release. See Rockstar’s pages for Episodes from Liberty City PC activation codes and GTA IV PC disc installation.
