Start at Amazon’s current claims page, read the instructions on the specific offer, redeem any code or linked-store entitlement exactly as directed, and only then install the game in Desktop Mode. The process is not a universal “send every Prime game to Steam” button: the offer’s country eligibility, storefront and game-specific compatibility determine what happens next.
What Prime Gaming gives you—and what it does not
Amazon’s Prime benefits can include a rotating selection of downloadable PC games at no additional charge for eligible Prime members. Those games are not all delivered through one permanent Amazon library or one universal redemption method. An offer may send you to an associated storefront, provide a redeemable code, or use an Amazon game library. Your ownership and installation path follow the instructions attached to that individual offer.

Amazon also presents Prime access to games in Luna’s cloud-delivered catalog. A cloud game is streamed from Amazon’s service; it is not a Windows or Linux game file that you install on the Deck. Downloadable PC offers and Luna cloud games are separate access modes. Before doing anything on the Deck, identify which kind of benefit the offer provides.
- Downloadable PC offer: You redeem ownership through the storefront or account named on the offer, then install the PC version locally.
- Luna cloud game: You play through Amazon’s cloud service, subject to Luna availability in your country and the requirements shown by Amazon.
- Code offer: You copy the code and redeem it at the exact storefront specified by the offer. A code is not automatically a Steam key.
Amazon’s country rules and catalog change. A title visible to one reader may be absent for another, and an offer that once used one storefront can later use another. Treat the current offer card, rather than an old list of Prime Gaming partners, as the authoritative instruction.

Check these details before claiming
- Prime eligibility: Sign in to the Amazon account that has the qualifying membership and make sure the offer is presented to that account.
- Country: Amazon explicitly says offers can vary by country. Do not assume that a code, storefront or Luna title is available in every region.
- Offer type: Look for wording such as a code, a linked storefront, an Amazon Games library entitlement, or a Luna play option.
- Target account: Note which Epic, GOG, Amazon or other account must receive the entitlement. Linking the wrong account can make a successfully claimed game appear to be missing.
- Local installation space: A downloadable game needs room on the Deck’s internal storage or an installed storage device. There is no universal storage amount because each title is different.
- Network access: You need an internet connection to claim the offer, sign in to the launcher and download the game. Luna play also depends on a connection while you play.
Step 1: Claim the offer on Amazon
- On a phone, computer or the Deck’s Desktop Mode browser, open luna.amazon.com/claims and sign in to the Prime account that should receive the game.
- Select the game or other offer you want. Read the complete offer card before selecting its claim button; the card contains the country and redemption conditions that apply to that title.
- Follow the offer’s own instructions. You may be redirected to a named PC storefront, asked to link an account, or shown a code to redeem elsewhere.
- If a code is displayed, copy it immediately and store it somewhere safe until redemption succeeds. Record which storefront the instructions name. Do not paste a code into Steam merely because the game will eventually be launched from SteamOS.
- Complete the storefront redemption or account-link step. Then open that storefront’s library in a browser or launcher and verify that the title is listed as owned.
- Save the confirmation email or screen. If the game is not in the expected library, you will need the offer name, code and account used when contacting support or retracing the claim.
How the main claim routes differ

The older Prime Gaming explanation from Amazon mentions GOG, Epic Games Store, Legacy Games and Amazon’s own Games app as examples of past distribution. That history helps explain why offers look different, but it is not a promise that every current title uses one of those stores.
Step 2: Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode
- Press the Steam button to open the system menu.
- Choose Power, then select Switch to Desktop. Wait for the KDE Plasma desktop to load.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if you have not already done so. Desktop Mode is where you install software and manage launchers outside the standard Steam library interface.
SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve’s SteamOS documentation describes Desktop Mode as a place to install other software, while Proton provides a compatibility layer that allows many Windows games to run on SteamOS. Those capabilities explain why a separate launcher and a compatibility tool may be needed; they do not guarantee that a particular Prime title will run.
Step 3: Install Heroic Games Launcher from Discover
- Open the Discover software center from the desktop taskbar.
- Search for Heroic Games Launcher.
- Select the application, choose Install, and wait for Discover to finish.
- Launch Heroic from Discover or the application menu.
Heroic documents a Steam Deck workflow in which the launcher is installed from Discover and then made available in Steam’s Game Mode. Its Linux quick-start documentation also describes signing in to Amazon, Epic and GOG accounts. Heroic is a third-party launcher, so its interface and supported login flows can change; use the current sign-in screen rather than relying on an old screenshot.

- In Heroic, open the account or store sign-in area.
- Choose the service that matches the claim: Amazon, Epic or GOG when the offer was routed there.
- Complete the browser-based authentication and return to Heroic. If two-factor authentication is enabled, finish that prompt as well.
- Open the connected library and search for the claimed title. Confirm that it is shown as owned before attempting an installation.
If the title is not listed, stop and check the account identity first. A code redeemed to one Epic or GOG account will not appear in a different account that happens to use the same email address elsewhere. Likewise, an Amazon claim does not become an Epic or GOG entitlement unless the offer specifically sent you through that store.
Step 5: Install the game in Heroic
- Select the title in Heroic’s library and choose Install.
- Choose an installation location with enough free space. Keep the path simple and avoid moving the folder while the installation is in progress.
- Allow the launcher to download the game and any required files. Large downloads can take time and may fail if the Deck sleeps or loses its connection.
- Before the first launch, open the game’s settings in Heroic and review the available compatibility-tool options.
- Use the default Proton or Wine configuration first. If the game fails to start, Heroic supports compatibility tools such as Proton-GE; selecting a different version can resolve a title-specific problem, but there is no single version that works for every game.
- Launch once from Heroic in Desktop Mode. This first run lets the game create its prefix, apply prerequisites and reveal an error before you add it to the Game Mode library.
Compatibility settings are per game. A configuration that works for one Prime title can make another title fail, so change one setting at a time and keep track of the version that worked. Do not interpret a successful installation as proof of reliable performance: frame rate, controls, cut-scenes, anti-cheat systems and online services can behave differently from one title to the next.
Step 6: Add the installation to Steam Game Mode
Heroic’s Steam integration can create a library entry for an installed game. In Heroic, open the title’s launch or settings menu and use the option to add it to Steam. If your Heroic version presents the integration as a general preference, enable it and then add the individual game.

- With the game installed, choose Heroic’s Add to Steam or equivalent Steam-integration command for that title.
- Close Heroic and return to the desktop.
- Open Steam in Desktop Mode and check the library for the new entry. If it was added as a non-Steam game, its name may appear under that category rather than alongside purchased Steam titles.
- Switch back to Game Mode from the desktop menu or Steam’s power options.
- Find the added entry in the library and launch it. The entry should call Heroic or the installed game using the configuration you selected.
Some users prefer to keep Heroic itself as the Game Mode entry and select games from its interface; others add each installed game separately. Both approaches use the same local files. If an entry opens Heroic but does not start the game, return to Desktop Mode and test the title directly in Heroic before changing Steam shortcuts.
Understand Proton and the limits of compatibility
SteamOS runs on Linux, while many PC games are built for Windows. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls so SteamOS can run it. Heroic can use Proton-based compatibility tools for games obtained through supported stores, but the translation layer is not a universal emulator and does not make every Windows title compatible.
Expect game-specific differences in these areas:
- Launch: A game may open normally, require a different Proton-GE release, or fail before showing a menu.
- Controls: The game may need a community layout or manual controller mapping even when its graphics work.
- Online features: Anti-cheat, launchers and account checks can block multiplayer independently of the base game.
- Video and audio: Intro movies, codecs or overlays can fail while the game itself remains playable.
- Performance: Installing successfully says nothing about frame rate, battery life or stability. Those results depend on the title and its settings.
For that reason, the safe promise is “many Windows games can run through Proton,” not “all Prime games work on Deck.” Check the individual title’s current SteamOS or Proton behavior before investing time in a complicated setup.

What to do when something goes wrong
The offer is missing from the claims page
Confirm that you are signed in to the qualifying Prime account, then check the country attached to the account and the offer dates. Amazon’s catalog rotates and offers can vary by country. A missing card can mean that the title is not currently offered to your account, not that the Deck is malfunctioning.
The code is rejected
Read the offer card again and verify the code’s destination storefront, region and expiration conditions. A code supplied for Epic, GOG or another service will be rejected by Steam. Re-enter it without added spaces, and make sure you are signed in to the account that should own the game.

The game does not appear in Heroic
Sign out and back in to the exact store account used during redemption. Refresh the library after authentication. If the offer used a storefront that Heroic does not support for that title, Heroic cannot create a library entry merely because the game was claimed through Prime; follow the storefront’s own SteamOS options instead.

The Amazon Games app asks for a Windows installer
Amazon’s older instructions include a file named AmazonGamesSetup.exe. That is a Windows installer, and those instructions do not establish a native SteamOS installation route. Do not treat running that executable on the Deck as an officially supported SteamOS procedure. Recheck whether the current offer can be redeemed at a supported storefront, or use the access method explicitly provided by the offer.
The game installs but will not launch
- Launch it from Heroic in Desktop Mode and note the exact behavior: no window, an error message, a launcher loop or a crash after the logo.
- Verify that the installed files are complete and that the account still shows the game as owned.
- Try the compatibility tool already available in Heroic, then test a Proton-GE version if the title supports it.
- Disable optional overlays or launch arguments that you added, and test again with the simplest configuration.
- Search for current title-specific SteamOS or Proton reports before assuming that reinstalling will help. A game can remain incompatible even after the launcher is configured correctly.
The entry works in Desktop Mode but not Game Mode
Return to Desktop Mode and use Heroic’s Steam integration again. Confirm that the Steam shortcut points to the installed title or to Heroic’s launch command, not to a temporary installer. Test the same entry from Steam in Desktop Mode; if it fails there too, the issue is the game or compatibility configuration rather than Game Mode’s display.
The offer is Luna-only
A Luna cloud entitlement is not a downloadable PC license. It will not appear as an installable game in Heroic simply because you are a Prime member. Use Luna’s supported browser or application path, and confirm that the cloud catalog is available in your country. If you need an offline or locally installed game, look for a separate downloadable PC offer instead.

Amazon says Prime members continue to receive rotating PC games while Luna’s cloud-delivered catalog is a separate benefit with its own country availability. Do not substitute one for the other when planning storage, offline play or Deck compatibility.
A practical decision path for each new Prime offer
- Read the card: Decide whether it is downloadable PC access, a code, a linked-store entitlement or Luna streaming.
- Confirm the region: If the offer is unavailable in your country, no launcher setting can make it appear.
- Identify the account: Redeem to the store account you intend to use on the Deck.
- Choose the installation route: Use Heroic for supported Amazon, Epic or GOG libraries; follow another route only when the offer explicitly requires it.
- Test the title: Install and launch in Desktop Mode before building a Game Mode shortcut.
- Decide whether it is worth keeping installed: If the game is incompatible, online features fail or performance is poor, remove the local files without confusing that result with a failed claim. Ownership remains tied to the account where you redeemed it.
Common assumptions that lead to wasted time
- “Prime means every game is a Steam key.” It does not. The offer may use another storefront, an Amazon library or Luna.
- “A successful claim guarantees a Deck install.” Claiming proves entitlement, not Linux or Proton compatibility.
- “The Amazon Windows app is the official SteamOS solution.” The documented installer is a Windows executable; it is not evidence of a native SteamOS app.
- “If Heroic supports the store, every title in that store works.” Store support and game compatibility are separate questions.
- “Luna and downloadable PC games are interchangeable.” One is streamed from the cloud and the other is installed locally.
- “An old Prime Gaming list is still current.” Amazon rotates offers and changes distribution partners, so use the current claim card.
Steam Deck Prime Gaming checklist
- Open Amazon’s current claims page and select the exact offer.
- Read its country, storefront, code and account instructions.
- Redeem the entitlement and verify ownership in the destination library.
- Confirm that the offer is a downloadable PC game rather than Luna-only access.
- Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode and install Heroic from Discover.
- Sign in to the matching Amazon, Epic or GOG account.
- Install the game, test it in Desktop Mode and adjust compatibility tools only as needed.
- Add the working installation to Steam through Heroic’s integration, then launch it from Game Mode.
- If it fails, separate the problem into claim, account, storefront, launcher, Proton or game-specific compatibility before repeating steps.
Bottom line
Claim the game where Amazon’s offer tells you to claim it, not automatically in Steam. For a downloadable title in a Heroic-supported storefront, the dependable Deck route is: claim and redeem, switch to Desktop Mode, install Heroic from Discover, sign in, install and test the game, then add it to Steam for Game Mode. Luna-only titles follow a cloud path, and no method can guarantee that every Prime game will run well—or at all—on Steam Deck.
