Steam Deck vs. Windows Handhelds for PC Game Launchers and Free Games

Choose a Steam Deck if most of your library is on Steam and you want SteamOS with Valve’s Deck Verified guidance. Choose a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or ROG Ally X if you need native access to several PC storefronts, Xbox Game Pass, or Windows-only launchers. The better device is the one that matches the games you already own; compatibility still has to be checked title by title.

This guide compares launcher access, free-game options, setup effort, compatibility checks and the listed US prices for the Steam Deck OLED, ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Ally X. Prices and availability can change, so verify the live product pages before buying.

What is the practical difference?

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system designed around Steam. Valve says Proton enables Windows games to run on SteamOS, but Proton compatibility is specific to each game rather than universal. Valve’s Deck Verified program provides a per-title indication of how a game behaves on Deck.

Windows handhelds run a standard Windows environment. That gives them direct access to Windows versions of Steam, Xbox, Epic and GOG launchers, subject to each game’s own requirements and services. ASUS explicitly lists Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG for the ROG Ally X, and presents the ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows handheld for PC games included with Game Pass.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

The distinction is less about whether a device is a “real PC” and more about where the compatibility work happens. SteamOS can require Proton and title-specific checks before a Windows game behaves correctly. Windows generally lets you install the launcher directly, but you still have to deal with desktop menus, account sign-ins, updates, anti-cheat and games that were designed for a keyboard and monitor. Neither platform guarantees that every PC title will feel like a console game.

Question Steam Deck / SteamOS Windows handhelds covered here
Steam library Native SteamOS interface with Deck Verified guidance. Steam runs as a Windows launcher; ASUS lists it for the ROG Ally X.
Epic and GOG Valve documents Proton for Windows games generally, but the cited pages do not establish an effortless native Epic or GOG launcher workflow. ASUS explicitly names Epic and GOG for the ROG Ally X.
PC Game Pass Do not assume every Game Pass PC title installs and behaves like a Steam game on SteamOS; the cited sources do not establish that workflow. Game Pass is a central feature of the ROG Xbox Ally and is listed for the ROG Ally X.
Per-game checks Use Deck Verified information and the game’s requirements. Use Xbox’s handheld-compatibility information and the game’s own requirements.
Interface SteamOS is purpose-built for a controller-first Steam library. Windows offers broader launcher access, but you are managing a desktop operating system on a small screen.

Steam Deck: the best fit for a Steam-first library

How SteamOS compatibility works

On Steam Deck, a Windows PC game is normally delivered through Steam and may use Proton to translate the game’s Windows requirements for SteamOS. Valve’s SteamOS support documentation explains the operating system and repair process, while the Steam Deck software page describes Deck Verified and Valve’s continuing Proton work.

Verified status is useful, not a blanket guarantee. A game can be playable but have small text, an awkward launcher, a control issue or a feature that needs manual adjustment. Check the individual game’s current Steam page, community reports and any anti-cheat or online-service requirements before assuming a multiplayer title will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the details behind a compatibility label rather than stopping at the color or headline. Notes can reveal that a title needs a touch-screen tap, displays a non-controller prompt, has an external launcher, or has a feature that is not supported. Also check the date of recent player reports: a game update can improve or weaken behavior without changing your ownership or save files.

Can you play Epic Games and other launchers?

SteamOS is not Windows. The cited Valve pages establish Proton support for Windows games, but they do not establish a native, one-click Epic Games Store or GOG launcher workflow on Deck. Some owners use additional launchers or compatibility layers, but that can involve extra installation, sign-in and troubleshooting steps. If Epic or GOG is the center of your library, a Windows handheld is the lower-friction choice.

You can still play a non-Steam game on Deck when a compatible installation method exists, but evaluate the specific title rather than treating “runs on Proton” as proof that its separate launcher, updates, cloud saves or anti-cheat service will work. Consider how often you will need to repeat the process after a launcher update or when moving between desktop and gaming modes.

Steam Deck strengths and limits

  • Strength: SteamOS presents the Steam library in a console-like interface, with Deck Verified guidance in the place where you choose games.
  • Strength: Proton can make many Windows games available without installing Windows.
  • Strength: A Steam-only household can keep purchases, downloads and controller settings in one familiar storefront.
  • Limit: Compatibility varies by game, especially when a title depends on a launcher, anti-cheat system or other Windows-specific component.
  • Limit: The cited material does not prove that Epic, GOG or every Game Pass PC title is as straightforward to install as a Steam game.
  • Limit: A controller-first interface does not remove the need to investigate keyboard input, text size, online services or suspend behavior for each game.

Windows handhelds: the simplest route to several launchers

ROG Xbox Ally

ASUS describes the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows handheld for PC titles and games included with Game Pass. Its US product page showed $599.99 when checked on October 13, 2026. That is a manufacturer-page price, not a retailer survey; confirm the model, stock and current price before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because it uses Windows, you can install the launchers your library requires and use the Windows versions of their games. Game Pass access is a primary reason to consider it, but individual games can still have hardware, account, online-service or compatibility requirements. A Game Pass catalog can also change, so check whether the specific title is currently included and whether your subscription tier grants access.

ROG Ally X

The 2024 ROG Ally X page lists compatibility with Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG and other PC launchers. ASUS’s US page showed $799.99 on October 13, 2026. Treat that as a dated manufacturer listing rather than a guaranteed current selling price.

Ally X is the clearest fit in this comparison when your games are split among multiple storefronts. You still need to check each game’s requirements, and Windows can require more desktop-style navigation than SteamOS when you are using a controller. You may need an on-screen keyboard, touch input or a small external keyboard for account setup, troubleshooting and launchers that do not expose every command through a gamepad.

What Windows does not guarantee

Windows removes the operating-system barrier to installing a launcher; it does not make every game equally suitable for a handheld. A title may require a keyboard, a separate account, a persistent online connection, a particular anti-cheat service or settings that are uncomfortable on a small display. Use the launcher’s system requirements and Xbox’s handheld-compatibility information before buying for a specific game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct installation also means more independent update paths. Windows itself, the launcher, the game and anti-cheat components can each request updates. Plan to sign in to every service before travel and test suspend/resume after major updates instead of assuming that a previously working title will behave identically.

Which handheld works with the games you already own?

Start with your actual library, not a generic “Steam Deck versus Windows” score. Make a list of the games you care about and record where each one is owned, whether it is single-player or online, and whether you need cloud saves, mods or a subscription to access it.

  1. Identify the storefront. Mark each game as Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox/Game Pass or another Windows launcher.
  2. Check the platform signal. For Steam games, review the game’s Deck Verified status and current requirements. For a compatible Windows handheld, consult Xbox’s handheld-compatibility program where applicable.
  3. Check game-specific services. Look for anti-cheat, an external launcher, a required account, always-online access, controller support and readable interface text.
  4. Separate “starts” from “works well.” A game that launches may still have broken multiplayer, missing video features, poor controls or a difficult launcher.
  5. Count setup effort. If you want to press power and play from one library, SteamOS has an advantage for a Steam-heavy collection. If you want several native storefronts, Windows usually avoids the extra compatibility-layer decisions.
  6. Check your save strategy. Confirm that cloud saves are supported by the specific launcher and game, and do not assume a save from one storefront can be moved automatically to another.
  7. Test your must-play title first. If one game determines the purchase, verify its online mode, anti-cheat, controller layout and resume behavior before comparing secondary features.

For a mixed library, count how many important games are outside Steam rather than how many total games you own. One essential Game Pass or Epic title can matter more than dozens of Steam games you rarely play. Include games you have claimed but not installed; a permanent entitlement is useful only if the device can run the launcher and title reliably.

How to get free PC games on each device

“Free game” can mean three different things:

  • Permanent giveaway: you claim a title during a promotion and keep the entitlement under that storefront account, subject to its terms.
  • Free-to-play: the base game costs nothing, but optional purchases or online-service requirements may apply.
  • Subscription-included: the game is available while your subscription and the publisher’s licensing arrangement remain active.

These categories have different ownership and access consequences. A permanent claim is tied to the account used to redeem it, a free-to-play game can still require a separate account or anti-cheat service, and a subscription title can disappear from the catalog or become inaccessible when eligibility ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free games on Steam Deck

Steam Deck can play free-to-play or permanently claimed Steam games when the individual title is compatible with SteamOS. Check Deck Verified status and the game’s own requirements; “free” does not remove anti-cheat, launcher or online-service limitations.

For a free title claimed through Epic or another non-Steam store, the key question is not the price but whether you can install and maintain that launcher and game reliably on SteamOS. The cited official pages do not verify a current dated Epic giveaway or a complete list of free titles, so check the storefront’s live promotion page, region, claim window and post-promotion access before planning around an offer.

Do not redeem a promotion on a temporary account or a different regional account by mistake. Confirm the title appears in the account library, note any launcher requirement and check whether the game’s online service supports SteamOS. If setup involves repeated desktop-mode steps, include that time in your decision rather than treating the giveaway as frictionless.

Free games on Windows handhelds

Windows makes the storefront choice straightforward: install the relevant Windows launcher, sign in, claim or purchase the game, and install it to the handheld. This is especially useful for free games distributed through Epic, GOG or Xbox services. A subscription-included title may stop being playable when the subscription ends, so distinguish that from a permanent claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Promotions change frequently. Confirm the offer’s end date, region, account requirements and whether the title remains in your library after the promotion. Do not treat a historical giveaway as a currently available game. Also check download size and available storage before starting a large installation, particularly if several launchers are sharing the internal drive.

Setup workflow before you buy

Steam-first setup

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and inspect its Deck Verified label.
  2. Read the notes behind that label for controls, display text, launcher behavior and any unsupported feature.
  3. Check recent player reports for changes after updates, especially for multiplayer games.
  4. Install the game on the Deck and test the exact mode you intend to play before relying on it for travel.
  5. If a game is not verified, decide whether occasional troubleshooting is acceptable or whether you need a Windows handheld.
  6. Check whether mods, external launchers or third-party accounts are essential to the way you play; test those components, not just the base game.

Multi-launcher Windows setup

  1. List the launchers and subscriptions your library uses.
  2. On the Windows handheld, install each launcher from its official Windows distribution or the Microsoft Store where offered.
  3. Sign in to the account that owns the games; purchases and claimed entitlements remain tied to that account.
  4. Install one representative game from each major launcher and test controls, text size, suspend/resume and online features.
  5. Use Xbox’s handheld-compatibility information for supported Xbox titles, then verify the individual game’s requirements.
  6. Set up updates and storage deliberately so a launcher does not fill the drive or download while you are using a metered connection.

Testing one game from each storefront catches problems that a specification sheet cannot: a launcher that requires touch input, a title that does not resume cleanly, or an online game whose anti-cheat service rejects the environment. Test while connected and offline if you expect to play during travel.

Other buying factors beyond launchers

Launcher access is the decisive difference, but it is not the only one. Compare the exact model’s storage, display, battery behavior, controls and current price. The cited product pages do not provide a controlled benchmark between these devices, so avoid treating one model as universally faster or longer-lasting.

Think about how you will use the handheld. A controller-friendly interface and reliable suspend behavior may matter more for short sessions than a long desktop setup. Conversely, a player who installs games from several stores may accept extra Windows navigation to avoid compatibility-layer work. Readability, touch input and the ability to connect a keyboard can be important for strategy games, launchers and account recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage is another practical cost. If your library is large, compare the included capacity of the exact configuration and budget for expansion only after checking device support and the storage product itself. A microSD card can be relevant, but no particular capacity, speed class or model is established here; verify requirements before buying an accessory.

Prices and model choices

Model Listed US price What the listing establishes Price caveat
Steam Deck OLED 512GB or 1TB $949 shown on Valve’s Steam Deck page for each listed OLED model in the returned page material Valve lists OLED configurations on the Steam Deck product page. ROG Ally X (2024) $799.99 ASUS US product-page price checked October 13, 2026 Manufacturer listing; not a retailer survey. Confirm current stock and model identity.

The prices are not a controlled value comparison: storage, display, battery capacity, included software and regional availability can differ, and the Steam Deck page’s returned listing may not represent every configuration or sale condition. Compare the exact model you can buy today, then add any storage or accessories you genuinely need.

Do not compare a manufacturer page with a discounted retailer listing as if they were the same offer. Check whether tax, shipping, warranty terms, refurbished status or a bundle changes the final total. A cheaper handheld can become less economical if it requires an additional subscription, storage purchase or accessory for your intended library.

Decision guide

Choose Steam Deck when

  • Most of your important games are in Steam.
  • You want a console-like SteamOS interface and built-in Deck Verified guidance.
  • You accept checking Proton compatibility for each nontrivial game.
  • Your free games are mainly Steam free-to-play titles or Steam claims.
  • You value a single library and are willing to troubleshoot occasional exceptions.

Choose a Windows handheld when

  • Your library is divided among Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox/Game Pass.
  • Game Pass PC access is a primary reason for buying.
  • You want native Windows launchers rather than a SteamOS workaround.
  • You are comfortable with Windows account management and desktop-style controls on a handheld.
  • Your must-play games depend on Windows launchers or services that you do not want to configure through compatibility layers.

Choose based on one essential game

If one multiplayer, anti-cheat or launcher-dependent game determines the purchase, verify that title first. A broad platform preference matters less than whether your must-play game supports the operating system, controls, online service and resume behavior you need.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “PC” means identical compatibility. SteamOS and Windows use different software paths.
  • Treating Deck Verified as a lifetime guarantee. Game updates and launcher changes can alter behavior.
  • Calling a subscription title “free forever.” Subscription access can end when eligibility or licensing ends.
  • Buying for a giveaway without checking the claim window. Offers are regional and time-limited.
  • Comparing prices without matching models. Check the exact storage, edition, date and seller conditions.
  • Ignoring controls and display needs. A game can launch yet remain unpleasant without a keyboard, readable text or controller support.
  • Confusing ownership with installation. Claiming a game gives your account an entitlement; it does not guarantee that the launcher or operating system can run it well.
  • Skipping an online test. A single-player launch does not prove that anti-cheat, matchmaking or voice features work.
  • Assuming every storefront shares saves. Verify cloud-save behavior and account links for the exact title.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Epic Games and other launchers on Steam Deck?

SteamOS is not Windows. Valve documents Proton support for Windows games, but the cited Valve pages do not establish a simple native Epic or GOG workflow. Some games and launchers can be configured through additional methods, yet setup, updates and anti-cheat behavior vary. If direct Epic, GOG or other Windows-launcher access is essential, choose a Windows handheld.

Can I get free PC games on a Steam Deck?

Yes, when the free-to-play game or claimed title is compatible with SteamOS. Check Deck Verified status and the game’s requirements. A title claimed from Epic or another store may require extra launcher setup, so verify the live offer and the installation path before relying on it.

Is a Windows handheld better for Game Pass?

It is the simpler fit for PC Game Pass because the ROG Xbox Ally is presented as a Windows handheld for games included with Game Pass, and ASUS lists Xbox Game Pass for the Ally X. Individual games still have their own requirements, and catalog availability depends on your subscription and current licensing.

Which handheld works with the games I already own?

Map each important game to its storefront, then check Deck Verified for Steam titles or Xbox’s handheld-compatibility information for applicable Windows titles. Confirm anti-cheat, external-launcher, account, controller and online requirements. The device that supports your must-play games with acceptable setup is the right choice, even if it is not the broad winner on paper.

Does Windows guarantee that every launcher feels good on a handheld?

No. Windows provides direct access to launcher software, but some launchers and games are built for a keyboard, mouse or larger display. Test sign-in, text readability, touch controls, suspend/resume and updates on a representative title from each storefront.

Best Value
Steam Deck Oled 512 GB Handheld Gaming Console with 1280x800 HDR OLED display, Up to 90Hz Refresh Rate, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, With Carrying Case & 45W Power Supply
  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.

  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Are free-to-play, giveaways and Game Pass titles the same?

No. Free-to-play means the base game has no purchase price but may include purchases or service requirements. A permanent giveaway is an account entitlement claimed during a limited promotion. A subscription-included game is available only while your subscription and the relevant license remain active.

Should I buy extra storage immediately?

Only after checking the exact handheld’s supported expansion options and the storage needs of your library. A microSD card may be useful, but capacity, speed and model suitability should be verified for the device and your installation plan.

Can I rely on the listed prices?

Use them as dated manufacturer-page references, not guaranteed current prices. Valve’s page showed $949 for each listed OLED configuration in the returned material, while ASUS pages showed $599.99 for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and $799.99 for the 2024 ROG Ally X on October 13, 2026. Recheck live price, stock, model identity and seller conditions before buying.
