The safest way to find a genuinely free Nintendo Switch 2 game is to start with Nintendo’s Free-to-start games catalog for your country. You can also find no-cost demos and free games in the eShop. If you have a promotional download code or a digital entitlement bundled with hardware, redeem it on the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Existing Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are a different, paid entitlement: new vouchers cannot currently be purchased in the United States, and eligible unused vouchers have strict membership, region, expiry and game-eligibility rules.
This guide separates each offer type, shows the exact redemption paths, and explains what to check when a download does not appear.

Start with Nintendo’s official free catalog
Nintendo’s U.S. Free-to-start games page describes titles that can be downloaded and started for free on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. Open the catalog, select a game, and read its individual store listing before downloading. The phrase “free-to-start” covers the initial download and play access; it does not promise that every later feature, item or mode is free.

The U.S. catalog is intended for U.S. Nintendo Accounts and eShop regions. Nintendo’s UK eShop overview separately identifies free games, apps and free demos. If your account is registered elsewhere, use that country’s official Nintendo store rather than assuming a U.S. listing, price, language or promotion will apply.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How to check a listing before you claim it
- Confirm that the page labels the title as free-to-start or otherwise shows a zero-cost download.
- Read the listing for optional purchases, subscriptions, paid currency or other in-game spending.
- Check the supported system label. A title may support both Switch and Switch 2, while another offer may be limited to one system.
- Note any regional or account restrictions shown on the listing.
Understand what kind of “free” offer you have
Free-to-start games, demos, promotional download codes, bundle entitlements and Game Vouchers are not interchangeable. The table below tells you what each path normally means and which checks matter before you redeem anything.
| Offer type | What you receive | Upfront cost | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-start game | A game download that can be started without paying for the initial download | None for the listed download | Optional purchases or spending may exist; verify the individual listing and region |
| Free demo | A limited trial version of a game | None for the demo | Content and play time are limited by the publisher; a full game may still cost money |
| Promotional download code | Software or downloadable content assigned to the Nintendo Account that redeems it | None to redeem, although the code may have been supplied with a purchase or promotion | Use the intended Download Code, not a retailer’s Control Number; codes are region- and account-sensitive |
| Digital bundle entitlement | A game associated with eligible Switch 2 or Switch hardware | Included with the qualifying bundle | You may need to register the bundle in eShop and choose the owning Nintendo Account |
| Nintendo Switch Game Voucher | A paid entitlement exchangeable for an eligible game | Not free; vouchers were purchased as a pair | Existing vouchers require an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, expire 365 days after purchase and cannot be used for Switch 2-exclusive games |
A code printed on a receipt or card is not automatically a free offer. Establish what it unlocks, which account will own it and whether it has a deadline before entering it.
Prepare the right Nintendo Account and console
Digital ownership follows the Nintendo Account linked to the user you select during redemption. Nintendo’s download-code instructions explain that the content cannot later be transferred to another account. Therefore, decide who should own the game before you type the code.

Pre-claim checklist
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that should permanently own the game.
- On a shared console, identify the specific user profile connected to that account. Do not choose a guest or family member by mistake.
- For online redemption, make sure that account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch at least once; Nintendo requires that initial eShop access before a web redemption can complete.
- Check that the console has enough available memory. Nintendo’s purchase and download guidance says the system must have sufficient space for the game; the required amount varies by title, so check the game’s listing rather than relying on a generic storage figure.
- Use the Nintendo Account’s purchasing region. A code or voucher bought for another region may not redeem on your account.
Download a free-to-start game or demo on Switch 2
For a catalog title, the ordinary eShop download is the shortest route. The wording can differ between regions and between full free-to-start games and demos, but the account and storage checks are the same.

- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]

- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
- On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
- Select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the download.
- Search for the title, or open it from your country’s Nintendo free-to-start catalog and follow the store link.
- Review the listing to confirm that it is a free-to-start game or free demo and to see any optional purchases or system requirements.
- Select the free download or demo option and confirm. If the page shows a price, stop and verify that you opened the intended edition and region.
- Return to the HOME Menu. The game icon appears with a download status bar. Wait for the status to complete, then open the title.
The catalog’s “free” label applies to the listed download. It does not remove optional purchases inside the game, and a demo does not automatically include the complete paid game.
Redeem a promotional download code on the console
Use this procedure for a legitimate Nintendo eShop Download Code supplied by a promotion, retailer, accessory or bundle. Keep the code private: anyone who redeems it first assigns the content to that account.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user and Nintendo Account that should own the game or content.
- In the eShop menu, choose Enter Code.
- Enter the Nintendo eShop Download Code exactly as printed. If the card or receipt also shows a retailer Control Number, do not substitute that number; Nintendo distinguishes the Download Code from the retailer’s internal reference.
- Confirm the displayed title and account. If the result is not the expected game, cancel rather than accepting an incorrect item.
- Follow the prompts to redeem. Released software starts downloading, and its icon with a download status bar appears on the HOME Menu.
- Leave the console connected to the internet until the download finishes. You can launch the title when the HOME Menu shows that installation is complete.
Nintendo’s instructions make the account relationship permanent: content redeemed by one Nintendo Account cannot be moved to another later. If several people use the console, verify the selected user before step 6, not after the code has been accepted.

Nintendo also supports web redemption through its online Nintendo eShop Download Code page. This is useful when the console is unavailable, but it has a prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch at least once.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Open Nintendo’s official online code-redemption page and sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the content.
- Enter the Download Code. Check every character before submitting; confusing a zero with the letter O or entering a retailer Control Number can produce an error.
- Review the title and account shown by Nintendo, then confirm the redemption.
- Turn on or wake the Switch 2 linked to that account and connect it to the internet. The software should begin downloading to the console associated with the account.
- Check the HOME Menu for the game icon and download status bar. If it does not appear, use the troubleshooting checks below before trying the code again.
If the account has never opened eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch, complete that first-console eShop sign-in and then retry the website redemption.
Register a game included with a Switch 2 bundle
A bundle can include a download code, or it can include a game that must be registered to an account in eShop. Do not assume that a bundle’s box label is itself the redemption method. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Digital Game Bundle FAQ describes the account-registration path.
- Connect the bundled Switch 2 or Switch console to the internet and complete the initial setup.
- Open Nintendo eShop and select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the bundled game.
- Locate the bundle or included game in eShop. Follow the registration prompt associated with the hardware bundle.
- Confirm the Nintendo Account and choose Download when Nintendo presents the entitlement.
- Return to the HOME Menu and wait for the icon’s download status bar to finish.
If the box supplies a separate Download Code instead, use the console or online code steps above. Registering a bundle on the wrong account can make the entitlement unavailable to the person who was meant to own it, so make the account decision before confirming.

What to do with existing Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers
Game Vouchers are not free promotional codes. They were a paid Nintendo Switch Online benefit that let an eligible account exchange a voucher for a qualifying game. Nintendo’s current U.S. Game Vouchers FAQ says additional vouchers can no longer be purchased. Recheck the official FAQ if you are reading this later, because program status can change.

Rules for an unused voucher
- You need an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to redeem it.
- An unused voucher expires one year, or 365 days, after the date of purchase.
- It must be redeemed in the region where it was purchased.
- Only the Nintendo Account that purchased the voucher can redeem it.
- Nintendo states that Game Vouchers cannot be redeemed for games exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Those conditions mean a voucher is not a way to obtain a free Switch 2-exclusive title. It may still be useful for an eligible Switch game if your membership, region, account and expiry date all qualify.
Redeem an eligible voucher
Nintendo’s voucher redemption instructions describe two equivalent starting points: find an eligible game in Nintendo eShop or on Nintendo’s website, then choose the voucher redemption option.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that bought the voucher and verify that the paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is active.
- Open the eligible game’s eShop or Nintendo.com listing and select the option to redeem with a Game Voucher.
- Confirm with the Nintendo Account password when prompted.
- If Nintendo asks you to choose a console, select the console associated with the account that should receive the download.
- For a released game, allow the download to begin and monitor the HOME Menu.
Pre-order voucher redemption works differently: Nintendo defers the transaction until payment processing, no earlier than seven days before the game’s release. A pre-order therefore may not download immediately when you select the voucher option.
Fix the most common download and redemption problems
The download does not start
First check the HOME Menu for the game icon and its download status bar. A title can be downloading in the background even when the eShop screen has closed. If no icon appears, open eShop again and confirm that you selected the intended user. Nintendo’s purchase and download guidance also requires enough available memory, so check system storage and free space before retrying.

The code says it has already been redeemed
Do not immediately conclude that the code failed. Nintendo notes that a different user on the same console may have redeemed it. Check the HOME Menu and the eShop redownload or account history for every user who has used the system. If the title belongs to another Nintendo Account, the ownership cannot be transferred to your account.
The code is rejected as invalid
- Confirm that you entered the Nintendo Download Code rather than a retailer Control Number.
- Re-enter the characters carefully, without adding spaces or punctuation that are not printed on the code.
- Check the code’s country or region against the Nintendo Account’s eShop region.
- Verify that the promotion has not reached an explicit redemption deadline.
- For a web redemption, confirm that the account has previously opened eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch.
The game is not compatible with the offer
A free-to-start listing, a demo and a voucher have different eligibility rules. In particular, an existing Game Voucher cannot be used for a Switch 2-exclusive game. Return to the individual game listing or the voucher FAQ instead of trying to convert one offer type into another.
The bundle game is missing
Confirm that the bundle was registered on the intended Nintendo Account, that the console is online and that the included game was selected in eShop. If the bundle supplied a separate code, look for that code in the box or purchase documentation and redeem it through the normal Download Code path.
Choose the right path at a glance
| Your situation | Use this path | First check |
|---|---|---|
| You want a no-cost title with no code | Open your country’s Nintendo free-to-start catalog or eShop demo section | Whether the listing says free-to-start or demo and identifies optional spending |
| You received a code from a promotion | eShop → Enter Code, or Nintendo’s online redemption page | That it is the Nintendo Download Code and that the intended account is signed in |
| Your hardware package includes a digital game | Register the bundle in eShop, or redeem its separate Download Code | Which delivery method the bundle uses |
| You have an unused Game Voucher | Redeem an eligible game through eShop or Nintendo.com | Active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, 365-day expiry, purchase region and Switch 2 eligibility |
Protect the account that owns the game
Because Nintendo assigns redeemed software to the selected Nintendo Account, account choice is the most important irreversible decision in this process. On a family console, tell other users whose profile to select before entering a code. Keep promotional codes private until you are ready to redeem them, and save the receipt or bundle documentation in case Nintendo support needs to verify the source.
For current availability, pricing labels and regional restrictions, rely on Nintendo’s own catalog and support pages. The U.S. free-to-start page, the UK eShop overview and the support articles linked above describe their respective markets; another country can show a different game list, release status or promotion terms.
