To clean a PS5 safely, turn it off, unplug its AC power cord, and remove dust from the vents with a low-powered vacuum. You can also remove the console’s external covers to vacuum dust beneath them, following the instructions for your specific model. Sony’s guidance covers removable covers—not opening the internal chassis or cleaning components inside it.
Clean the PS5 without removing its covers
- Turn off the console and disconnect its AC power cord before cleaning. Sony says to disconnect the power cable from the rear of the system for safety.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust around the air vents. Avoid forcing the nozzle into the console.
- Wipe the exterior plastic surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemically treated cloths, or apply alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, insecticides, or other volatile substances.
- Check that the vents are not blocked. Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm between the console and a wall, and avoiding long-fibre carpets and cramped spaces.
Sony’s instructions are available on its PS5: console is making noise support page. A fan may run louder during some games and applications, so noise alone does not establish that dust is the cause.

Remove the covers to vacuum dust underneath
Sony’s safety guide recommends removing the covers and using a handheld vacuum to remove dust trapped underneath. These are external covers, not the internal chassis.

- Turn off the PS5, unplug the AC power cord and other cables, and wait for the console to cool.
- Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface.
- Identify your PS5 model and follow the matching steps in Sony’s instructions for removing and attaching covers. Cover layout and removal differ by model; release the clips gently rather than forcing them.
- Use a handheld vacuum on low power to clear dust trapped beneath the covers.
- Reattach the covers by aligning their clips with the corresponding holes and pushing until they click. Reconnect cables only after the covers are secure.
Sony’s safety guide for CFI-12XX models specifically recommends vacuuming beneath the covers. Sony’s model-specific cover guidance explains how to remove and reattach them.

What “opening the console” does—and does not—mean
Removing the outer covers is the deeper cleaning method described in Sony’s cited instructions. Those instructions do not provide a procedure for opening the internal chassis, removing the fan, or cleaning internal components. Do not treat cover removal as permission or guidance to disassemble the console.
If the PS5 continues to have a noise or other problem after safe cleaning, contact PlayStation Support rather than proceeding with an unsupported internal teardown.

Keep dust from building up
- Leave at least 10 cm of open space around the console, as Sony recommends.
- Keep the air vents unobstructed and avoid placing the console in a cramped space or on a long-fibre carpet.
- Wipe exterior plastic with a soft, dry cloth; do not use solvents, sprays, or treated cloths.
