If your PS4 will not read a game disc, first check it for dirt or fingerprints and clean it gently with a soft, clean cloth. PlayStation recommends a lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs, wiped from the center toward the edge. This can remove surface dirt; it is not a method for repairing scratches. If more than one supported disc fails, follow PlayStation’s console troubleshooting steps rather than assuming each disc is damaged.
How to clean a PS4 game disc safely
- Eject and inspect the disc. Look for fingerprints, dirt, and visible physical damage. Handle it by the edges where possible.
- Wipe it gently. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. PlayStation’s instruction is: “Clean the disc by wiping from the centre towards the edge of the disc.” PlayStation Support recommends this for a scratched or dirty disc.
- Reinsert it and test. Check whether the console reads the disc. If it still fails, test another supported disc.
Wiping may remove dirt and fingerprints, but it does not repair a scratch. PlayStation’s guidance does not recommend toothpaste, polishing compounds, or generic scratch-repair kits, and does not establish that these products restore PS4 discs. If the disc remains unreadable, you can check it in another compatible player or ask a qualified optical-disc service whether inspection or resurfacing is appropriate; that is separate from PlayStation’s console-repair route.
Work out whether the disc or console is the likely problem
PlayStation recommends testing another game, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD, reinserting the disc after each troubleshooting step. PS4 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not useful test media.

Follow PlayStation’s PS4 troubleshooting order
- Test another supported disc. Eject and reinsert discs as you work through the steps. Use a game, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD—not a burned disc or audio CD.
- Start PS4 Safe Mode and choose option 5, Rebuild Database. Follow PlayStation’s official disc-issue instructions for entering Safe Mode and carrying out the step. Retest the disc as directed.
- Consider option 7, Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software), only if rebuilding does not resolve the issue. This is a destructive last resort: PlayStation warns that it deletes all console information, including system software. Read the on-screen warning and back up what you can before proceeding. Do not select this casually.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if the problem remains. PlayStation directs owners to its repair support route when the troubleshooting steps do not solve the issue. Avoid opening the console or replacing its optical drive without repair guidance for the exact PS4 model.
What “PS4 disc repair” can and cannot mean
PlayStation’s support page addresses disc-reading and eject issues and explains how to clean a dirty or scratched disc. It does not provide a scratch-resurfacing procedure, a recovery success rate, a repair price, or a guarantee. A lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cloth is a cleaning accessory for dirt and fingerprints, not a scratch-repair product.

If the problem follows one visibly damaged disc, an optical-disc service may be able to assess whether inspection or resurfacing is appropriate, but suitability and results are not established by PlayStation’s guidance. If multiple supported discs fail in the console, use PlayStation’s repair route; it is not a service for repairing a scratched game disc.

Sony’s PS4 Pro Safety Guide for chassis CUH-7216B lists PS4-format BD-ROM and notes that BD/DVD discs may, in rare instances, not operate properly on the console. That guide covers particular PS4 Pro chassis, so its complete compatibility details should not be assumed to apply to every PS4 model. Consult the safety guide for the matching console model when checking disc compatibility.
