Sony has discussed a next-generation PlayStation platform, but it has not announced a PS6 release date, US price, specifications, or backward-compatibility policy in the sources available as of October 8, 2026. If you want to play now, a PS5 is the current PlayStation console to consider. If your purchase depends on knowing PS6’s timing or features, waiting for an official announcement is the more informed choice.

What has Sony confirmed about PS6?

Coverage of Sony’s May 2026 financial results reported increased investment in a next-generation platform. It also reported that Sony had not decided when to launch the new console or at what price. In August 2026, TechRadar reported that Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said launch timing remained undecided amid component-supply concerns. These reports point to development, not a confirmed launch window. GameSpot’s May 2026 report and TechRadar’s August 2026 report describe the uncertainty.

The reports do not establish an official PS6 specification, US price, release date, or compatibility policy. Leaks, patents, and analyst forecasts are not confirmation from Sony; treat specific claims about hardware or features as speculation unless Sony announces them.

When is PS6 coming out, and how much will it cost?

Sony has not announced either a release date or a price in the sources available as of October 8, 2026. TechRadar recounts analysts’ expectation of a 2028 launch, but that is an analyst expectation—not Sony’s schedule. Sony’s reported position is that it has not decided on launch timing. A date or price presented as settled would go beyond what these sources establish.

What does the 2028 disc-production change mean?

In an official announcement dated July 1, 2026, Sony said production of physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Games released, or releasing, on disc before then are unaffected. This announcement is about physical game production; it does not set a PS6 launch date or confirm whether PS6 hardware will include a disc drive. Sony’s announcement explains the change.

Should you buy a PS5 or wait for PS6?

The choice depends on whether playing now matters more to you than comparing against a console whose price, timing, and features are still unannounced.

Consider a PS5 if you want to play now

PS5 is Sony’s current console option for someone who does not want to wait. Check current US retailer prices, model availability, and the games you want before buying; the sources here do not verify today’s PS5 price or stock. Sony’s 2020 US announcement listed launch prices of $399 for the Digital Edition and $499 for the model with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices. Sony’s launch announcement records those original figures.

Wait if PS6 details would change your decision

If you are comfortable postponing a purchase until you can compare the systems, waiting for Sony’s official announcement avoids making a decision based on rumors. The PS6 price, launch date, hardware specifications, disc-drive details, and backward-compatibility policy are not confirmed in the sources cited here.

Use these questions to make the call

  • How soon do you want to play the games available on PS5?
  • What is the verified current US price and availability of the PS5 model you would buy?
  • Would a future PS6 price or release date change your budget or timing?
  • Do you need a disc drive, or does your decision depend on playing existing PlayStation games on PS6? Neither PS6 detail is confirmed in the cited sources.

Do not assume a PS5 purchase will be upgradeable, transferable, or compatible with PS6; no such policy is established in the sources cited here.
