What Coolify’s automatic cleanup does
Coolify’s Docker cleanup removes reclaimable Docker data on a selected workload server. The workflow is designed to handle common unused images, build cache, and containers, while advanced settings determine whether it may also remove unused networks, unused volumes, or older application images that are normally kept for rollback. The feature is documented in Coolify’s automated Docker cleanup documentation.

Choose the server that actually hosts the applications and databases consuming disk space. A policy that is correct for a development host can be unsafe on a production host with persistent databases or a long rollback history.
Recommended baseline policy
- Schedule:
0 0 * * *, once daily at midnight according to the server’s scheduler and timezone. - Trigger mode: choose Run on every schedule for predictable daily maintenance, or Only above disk threshold when cleanup should run only after the configured limit is reached.
- Disk threshold: leave the starting value at 80 percent.
- Advanced cleanup: initially keep deletion of unused volumes, unused networks, and retained application images disabled.
- First run: start a manual cleanup and inspect the result before relying on the schedule.
This baseline gives you regular reclamation without immediately removing data that may be needed for a restore or rollback. Adjust it only after you have observed disk growth and identified which object classes are responsible.

Configure Docker Cleanup in Coolify
- Sign in to Coolify and open Servers.
- Select the workload server whose Docker host is filling up.
- Open Docker Cleanup.
- Set Cleanup frequency to
0 0 * * *. This cron expression requests a daily midnight check. - Choose Run on every schedule if you want a cleanup attempt every day. Choose Only above disk threshold if the cleanup should wait until disk usage reaches the configured threshold.
- Set Disk threshold to
80as the conservative starting point. - Expand Advanced cleanup. Leave Delete unused volumes, Delete unused networks, and the option that removes retained application images disabled while you audit the host.
- Save the settings.
- Select Run cleanup, review the confirmation dialog, and choose Run Docker Cleanup.
- Open Recent executions. Confirm that the run succeeded, review its output, and check whether disk usage fell when reclaimable data existed.
After the first run, test the applications and databases on that server. Check health checks, background workers, scheduled jobs, and database connectivity rather than assuming a successful cleanup message means the entire workload is healthy.
Choose the right trigger: schedule or threshold
Run on every schedule
This mode attempts cleanup at each cron occurrence, even when disk usage is below the threshold. It is useful when you want predictable maintenance and routinely generate build cache or temporary images. The operation can still find nothing to remove; a successful run does not imply that space was reclaimed.
Only above disk threshold
This mode makes the threshold the gate. Cleanup waits until disk usage is at or above the configured percentage. An 80% value leaves approximately one-fifth of the host’s capacity available for new deployments, logs, and transient build files. It is a trigger, not a promise that exactly 20% will remain after cleanup.
What happens after a resource operation
Coolify also considers cleanup after a resource is stopped or deleted. It triggers only when disk usage is at or above the threshold and no cleanup has completed on that server during the preceding hour. Coolify’s scheduler dispatches scheduled checks every minute, while only one cleanup is allowed to run on a server at a time. These gates prevent repeated concurrent scans when several resources change together; they do not guarantee immediate reclamation after every deployment. Understand every cleanup option before enabling it

Coolify explicitly warns that unused volumes can still contain important data. Enabling volume deletion is therefore a data-management decision, not merely a disk-saving switch. The advanced-option warning appears in the Coolify documentation.
Back up persistent data before deleting volumes
Inventory persistent storage before changing the volume setting. Coolify’s volume-mount and backup documentation explains that volume backups can remain on the deployment server and can optionally be copied to S3-compatible storage.

- Record whether the volume is currently attached, intentionally detached, or abandoned.
- Confirm where the backup is stored and how you would restore it on a new host.
- Test at least one restore for critical data instead of treating a successfully created archive as proof of recoverability.
Use an application-aware database backup workflow for databases. A file-level archive of a volume while a database is writing can be inconsistent, even if the archive command itself completes without an error. Schedule logical or otherwise database-consistent backups separately from Docker object cleanup, and retain them independently of the host you are trying to free.
Inspect reclaimable data before expanding the policy
Use Coolify’s Images page
Open Servers → [server] → Images. Coolify shows the repository, tag, image ID, creation time, size, container references, total usage, and reclaimable usage. Only images marked Unused can be deleted from that page. This view helps distinguish a large image that is still serving traffic from an old image that can be regenerated. Inspect the Docker host directly
If you have shell access, run read-only inventory commands on the exact server selected in Coolify:
docker ps— lists running containers.docker image ls— lists local images, tags, IDs, and sizes.docker volume ls— lists named volumes that require ownership checks.docker network ls— lists Docker networks before considering network deletion.docker system df— summarizes Docker disk usage and reclaimable amounts.
Capture the output before changing advanced settings. Compare it with Coolify’s image view and with your deployment records so that an apparently old object is not mistaken for disposable data.

Docker’s official guidance describes pruning as explicit and conservative: docker image prune removes dangling images by default, while broader commands remove additional categories. Named volumes are left alone unless volume pruning is requested. Read the Docker pruning guidance and treat commands such as docker system prune --volumes as an audited exception, not as a routine substitute for Coolify’s workflow.
Automate settings with the CLI or API
CLI
The command coolify server docker-cleanup update <server_uuid> updates a server’s cleanup configuration. Its options expose the cleanup frequency, disk threshold, force behavior, unused-network deletion, unused-volume deletion, and application-image retention. Run the command against the intended server UUID and review the command’s built-in help for the installed CLI version before scripting it. Automated changes should be applied through the same change-control process as a production deployment. Store the server UUID and resulting settings, and avoid enabling destructive flags in a generic script that runs against every server.

API
The server API exposes the corresponding settings, including docker_cleanup_frequency, docker_cleanup_threshold, force_docker_cleanup, delete_unused_volumes, delete_unused_networks, and disable_application_image_retention. Read the current values before sending an update so that an automation job does not overwrite a deliberate exception. The endpoint and response fields are documented at Coolify’s get-server-docker-cleanup API reference.
How to validate a cleanup run
- Check Recent executions for a success status and read the operation output.
- Confirm that disk usage changed only when reclaimable data was present; no change can be a normal result.
- Open the server’s Images page and compare total and reclaimable usage with the pre-run inventory.
- Run
docker system dfif shell access is available, then compare the result with Coolify’s figures. - Exercise every production application endpoint, worker, scheduled task, and database connection.
- Verify that the application images you intentionally retain for rollback are still present.
- Record the reclaimed amount, elapsed time, and any warnings so the next threshold or schedule change is evidence-based.
Cleanup can be CPU-intensive while it scans and removes unused data. Run an initial manual cleanup during a maintenance window if the server is busy, and watch CPU, memory, I/O, deployment queues, and application latency while it runs.

The scheduled cleanup never runs
- Confirm the cleanup is saved on the correct server, not merely on another host in the same Coolify installation.
- Check that the cron expression is exactly
0 0 * * *if you intended a daily midnight schedule. - If using threshold mode, verify that disk usage is actually at or above the configured percentage.
- Remember that Coolify permits only one cleanup per server at a time; an active or recently completed run can block another attempt during the one-hour resource-operation window.
The run succeeds but frees no space
- Inspect the Images page for reclaimable usage and confirm whether large images are still referenced by containers.
- Run
docker system dfto separate images, containers, local volumes, and build cache. - Check whether the largest objects are active volumes or retained rollback images, which the conservative policy intentionally leaves in place.
- Review host-level logs and other files if Docker’s reclaimable total is small; Coolify cleanup cannot remove unrelated operating-system data.
A deployment loses its rollback image
Review whether application-image retention was disabled or whether a direct prune command removed the image. Restore the desired release by redeploying or pulling the required image, then re-enable retention and document how many previous versions your recovery plan requires.

An application loses data after volume cleanup
Stop further destructive cleanup, identify the deleted volume and owning resource, and restore from the latest verified backup. If no consistent backup exists, recovery may not be possible. This is why volume ownership and restore testing must precede enabling Delete unused volumes.

Cleanup affects service performance
Because scanning and deletion can be CPU-intensive, move the cron time away from builds and traffic peaks, reduce how often it runs, or use threshold mode. Keep only one cleanup active per server and monitor I/O and application latency during the next run.
When to make the policy more aggressive
Enable unused-network deletion only after you have mapped custom networks to their containers and confirmed that detached services do not depend on them. Consider deleting unused volumes only when every unreferenced volume is demonstrably disposable or has a verified backup and restore path. Reduce application-image retention only after deciding how many prior releases you need for rollback and confirming that rebuilding or pulling an older release is acceptable.
Change one control at a time. Run a manual cleanup, inspect Recent executions, compare disk usage, and test workloads before changing the next control. This isolates the cause if a deployment, network connection, or data store behaves unexpectedly.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Identify the server and record its current disk usage.
- Inspect images in Coolify and inventory Docker containers, volumes, and networks.
- Confirm application-aware database backups and test restoration for critical data.
- Set a daily
0 0 * * *schedule and an 80% threshold. - Choose schedule mode deliberately: every schedule for predictable maintenance, threshold-only for event-driven reclamation.
- Keep unused-volume, unused-network, and retained-image deletion disabled initially.
- Run cleanup manually and review the execution output.
- Verify applications, databases, workers, and rollback images.
- Record reclaimed space and CPU/I/O impact.
- Change advanced settings only after an ownership and recovery review.
Bottom line
Use Coolify’s server-level Docker Cleanup as the default automation path: daily at 0 0 * * *, with an 80% threshold and conservative advanced settings. Inspect reclaimable images, protect persistent data with consistent backups, and validate Recent executions and application health after every change. Direct Docker prune commands belong only in a deliberately scoped, audited recovery or maintenance procedure.
