Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe safe way to clean a WordPress Media Library is to separate four jobs: removing unused attachment records, finding files in wp-content/uploads that have no database record, regenerating obsolete thumbnails, and reducing file sizes. They require different checks. An “unattached” image is not automatically unused, and a thumbnail-regeneration command is not an unused-media scanner.

Decide what “clean up” means before deleting anything
A Media Library can look cluttered for several unrelated reasons. Choosing the wrong operation is how a routine tidy-up removes a file still used by a theme, builder, gallery or direct URL.
| Problem | What you are looking for | Appropriate operation | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Admin clutter | Attachment records you no longer want visible in the Media Library | Inspect unattached or unused attachment records, then remove selected items | An attachment can be used outside the visible post editor |
| Storage consumed by unregistered files | Files present under wp-content/uploads without a WordPress attachment record |
Run an orphan-file scan and review each file | Direct URLs, theme code, plugins or generated formats may still use the file |
| Old or missing image sizes | Thumbnail derivatives made for image-size registrations that have changed | Regenerate current sizes with WP-CLI; optionally remove unknown sizes | An old derivative may be linked from outside WordPress |
| Large downloads | Oversized originals or uncompressed derivatives | Compress or convert selected images | Quality changes and replacement URLs can affect pages or integrations |
| Poor findability | Inconsistent names, dates and metadata | Adopt a naming and metadata process; do not confuse organization with deletion | Renaming or moving files can break existing URLs |
For a video-games site, treat screenshots, cover art, logos, character renders, gallery images and downloadable files as separate classes. A screenshot that is not attached to a post may still be loaded by a gallery block, a review template or a manually coded URL.

1. Back up the database and uploads folder
Do this before a bulk scan, deletion, conversion or thumbnail cleanup. The Cleanup Orphan Images documentation specifically advises backing up the uploads folder and warns that its deletion is permanent. A complete recovery plan should include both the database, where attachment records and metadata live, and the files under wp-content/uploads.
- Create a restorable database backup. Use the backup process supported by your host or operations team. Confirm that the backup completed and can be downloaded or restored.
- Copy the entire uploads directory. Preserve the original directory structure, including year/month folders and any derivative formats such as WebP files.
- Record the site state. Note the active theme, page builder, commerce or membership plugins, image-optimization service, CDN and any custom fields that can store image URLs.
- Prefer staging for a complex site. Clone the site when it uses builders, dynamic templates, custom code or externally referenced assets. Run the proposed cleanup there first.
- Keep the recovery copy during review. Do not discard it immediately after a scan reports success. Broken references can appear only on a rarely visited review, product or landing page.
An external drive is one possible destination for a separate copy, but a host snapshot or remote backup may fit your recovery process better. The essential requirement is a copy you can actually restore, not a particular device or provider.

2. Inventory the library and define a stopping point
Inspect the native Media Library first
Use the WordPress Media Library to review dates, file types, attachment details and obvious duplicates. WordPress includes a filter for unattached images; the Cleanup Orphan Images listing explains that this filter concerns Media Library entries and is different from files in the uploads folder that have no database record. Labels and screen layouts can vary by WordPress version, so treat the filter as a review queue rather than proof that an image is safe to delete.
Make a short inventory
Before scanning, write down which of these outcomes you need:
- Fewer attachment records in the admin interface.
- Less disk usage in
wp-content/uploads. - Current thumbnails after changing theme or plugin image sizes.
- Smaller originals or modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- A repeatable naming and review system for future uploads.
Also note the approximate library size, the date of the last theme or builder change, and whether an image CDN or optimization workflow creates files outside normal attachment records. These details determine which scan is useful and what a “missing” file may mean.
3. Find unused Media Library attachments without trusting a label
“Unattached” means an attachment is not associated with a particular post in the way WordPress reports it. It does not mean that no page or feature uses the file. A theme or plugin can reference a URL directly; a builder can store it in structured data; a widget, custom field, option or template can load it without a normal post-body relationship.
For that reason, scan results are candidates for review. No source in this guide establishes a universal accuracy rate for any scanner across themes, builders, custom fields and dynamically generated references.
Use a scanner that matches the site’s data model
Media Cleaner describes scanning for unused media entries and files, fixing broken entries and placing proposed changes in an internal trash so they can be previewed before permanent deletion. Its listing says its analysis includes compatibility work for particular plugins and themes, while its Pro offering adds filesystem analysis and broader support for complex plugins and builders. Those are the publisher’s feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every reference on your site will be found. Compare its supported integrations with your actual stack and keep a backup.

WP-Optimize’s documentation says its unused-image scan checks image files in the Media Library and the wp-content/uploads directory that it identifies as not attached or embedded in posts or pages. It then offers deletion of selected image copies and their Media Library record. The documentation does not establish coverage for every page builder, dynamic template, external link or custom database field, so inspect the selection before confirming.
Two other WordPress.org listings describe broader usage checks and recoverable workflows:
Recommended Free Tools
- MediaPilot AI says it indexes content, featured-image metadata, shortcodes, post metadata, widgets, term and user metadata, options, the Site Icon and Custom Logo, then sends candidates to a restorable trash.
- Media Purge describes checks across post content, metadata, theme customizer options, widget areas and several page-builder data formats, with restore from trash.
These statements come from the respective plugin listings. They should be treated as declared capabilities to verify on your site, not independent validation of scanner completeness.
Review a candidate before moving it to trash
- Open the attachment and record its filename, dimensions, upload date and URL.
- Search the public site for pages where the image would logically appear: reviews, game pages, galleries, category pages, author profiles and landing pages.
- Inspect featured-image fields, reusable blocks, widgets, theme settings, custom fields and builder templates relevant to that image.
- Search exported content or a database copy for the filename or full URL when you have a direct-reference concern.
- Move only clearly unused items to the scanner’s trash or quarantine. Keep an explanation of why each item was selected.
- Open the affected pages while logged out or in a private browser window. A front-end test catches references that the editor view may not show.
If a scanner offers only immediate permanent deletion, pause and obtain a backup or use a workflow that provides a recoverable review stage. A “safe” label is not a substitute for checking how your site stores media.
4. Find files in uploads that have no Media Library record
This is a filesystem question, not an attachment question. An orphan-file scanner looks for a file under the uploads directory that is not registered in the WordPress database. The Cleanup Orphan Images plugin advertises this check and manual selection before deletion.
Do not assume an unregistered file is disposable. The same listing warns that themes or plugins may use direct URLs. It also calls out generated WebP files as an example of derivatives that can exist without being registered as ordinary Media Library items.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Review orphan-file results methodically
- Check the filename pattern. A file with an optimization or responsive-image suffix may be a derivative of an image that the site still serves.
- Check creation context. Compare its directory and timestamp with a theme migration, optimization run, import or CDN workflow.
- Look for direct references. Search theme and plugin settings, custom CSS, templates and exported builder data for the filename or URL.
- Compare formats and dimensions. A WebP, AVIF or unusually sized JPEG may be generated for a specific delivery path rather than abandoned.
- Delete in small batches. Preserve the list of filenames and the backup so a mistaken deletion can be reversed.
Because the plugin describes deletion as permanent, do not use it as a trial-and-error tool on a live site. Test on staging or quarantine selected files until the browser-facing site has been checked.
5. Regenerate thumbnails separately with WP-CLI
Thumbnail maintenance solves a different problem: making derivatives for currently registered image sizes after a theme or plugin change. The official wp media regenerate documentation says the command regenerates thumbnails for one or more attachments and can target a named image size. The broader wp media reference documents media commands and listing registered sizes.

Regenerate all attachment thumbnails
From the WordPress installation on a properly backed-up site, run:
wp media regenerate
WP-CLI will ask for confirmation in an interactive run. On a large library, plan for CPU, memory, disk and execution time; use the host’s documented approach for long-running commands rather than starting an unmonitored job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRegenerate one registered size
When only one size changed, target that size instead of rebuilding every derivative:
wp media regenerate --image_size=medium
Replace medium with the registered size you actually need. Confirm the name against the active theme and plugins before running the command.
Remove thumbnails for unregistered sizes cautiously
The command supports --delete-unknown, which targets thumbnails for old image sizes no longer registered:
wp media regenerate --delete-unknown
The documentation also provides --skip-delete to avoid deleting original thumbnails. That option is preferable when a derivative might be linked outside the operator’s control. Do not combine deletion options simply because a size looks old; first verify that the active theme, builders and plugins no longer request it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Media Library Tools describes batch regeneration and removal of orphaned thumbnail files for sizes no longer registered. That is a third-party plugin feature, not WordPress core behavior. Whichever method you choose, keep a backup and verify representative pages afterward.
6. Reduce file size only when optimization is the goal
Compression and format conversion change image assets; they do not identify unused media. If storage or page weight is the problem, select images deliberately and preserve originals until the replacements have been tested.

Media Library Tools describes compression controls and batch thumbnail processing. MediaPilot AI describes local WebP or AVIF conversion and storage analytics. The available documentation does not provide a benchmarked savings percentage or a universal quality setting, so do not promise a fixed reduction.
A safe optimization sequence
- Start with a representative sample of screenshots, cover art and gallery images at different dimensions.
- Record the original file size, dimensions, format and URL.
- Convert or compress copies, then inspect text, fine UI details, dark scenes and transparency at the display sizes your site uses.
- Test posts, galleries, responsive views and downloads. Confirm that the optimization workflow preserves required URLs or updates every reference.
- Process larger batches only after the sample passes visual and functional checks.
- Retain originals or a restorable backup until your cache, CDN and browser tests are complete.
7. Organize a large game-media library without breaking URLs
Organization is a retrieval problem, not a reason to delete files. Establish a convention for new uploads and apply it gradually to old assets.
Use descriptive, stable filenames
For example, a filename such as elden-ring-shadow-erdtree-boss-arena-01.jpg is easier to identify than IMG_4832.jpg. Include the game, asset type and a sequence number when that information is stable. Avoid repeatedly renaming files that are already referenced; WordPress URLs and external embeds may continue to point to the old path.
Separate editorial roles
Define whether an upload is a featured image, in-article screenshot, gallery sequence, logo, author image or downloadable asset. A short internal naming guide prevents duplicate cover art and makes scanner results easier to assess.
Use metadata consistently
Record useful alt text and captions for accessibility and editorial context. Do not use alt text as a storage inventory: it does not prove where a file is referenced, and changing it does not remove the physical asset.
Archive instead of deleting when uncertainty is high
If an old image may be needed for a historical review, seasonal page or external embed, move it through a recoverable process or retain it in an archived backup. A smaller admin list is not worth a broken legacy URL.
8. Verify every cleanup batch
Verification is part of the operation, not an optional final glance. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal scanner accuracy rate, so your own site review is the authority on whether a reference survived.
- Open representative game reviews and news posts from different years.
- Check featured images, image galleries, captions, lightboxes and responsive mobile views.
- Test homepage, category, tag, author and search templates that may pull images dynamically.
- Inspect reusable blocks, builder templates, widgets, logos and the Site Icon.
- Test image URLs through any CDN or cache layer used by the site.
- Check downloadable files separately; a PDF, ZIP or original-resolution image may not appear in an image-focused scan.
- Review server logs or broken-link monitoring for 404s after a large deletion when those tools are available.
If a broken image appears, restore the relevant attachment or file from trash or backup first. Then identify whether the missed reference lived in a builder field, option, direct URL, generated derivative or external system. Do not repeat the same scan until that storage pattern is understood.

9. Choose a method by coverage and recovery, not marketing labels
| Question | Why it matters | What to confirm before use |
|---|---|---|
| What is scanned? | An attachment record, a physical uploads file and a generated thumbnail are different objects. | Whether the method covers the category causing your problem. |
| Where are references checked? | Post content alone will miss settings, metadata, builders, widgets and direct URLs. | Support for your theme, builder, custom fields, options and dynamic templates. |
| Can you review the reason? | A filename without context is a poor basis for permanent deletion. | A dry run, explanation, candidate list or manual-selection screen. |
| Can you recover? | Deletion may be permanent or difficult to reconstruct. | Trash, quarantine, restore and a tested backup. |
| How does it scale? | Large libraries can exhaust host resources or make review impractical. | Batch controls, resumability, WP-CLI support and resource requirements. |
| Does it fit the task? | Compression, orphan discovery and thumbnail regeneration are not interchangeable. | A clearly stated feature for the exact outcome you need. |
There is no evidence here for a universally best plugin. Pick the narrowest method that answers your question, then validate the result on your own site.
10. Troubleshoot common cleanup mistakes
“The unattached filter found hundreds of images. Can I delete them all?”
No. Use the list as a lead. Check direct URLs, featured-image fields, builder data, widgets, theme settings, custom fields and templates before moving items to trash.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“The scanner says an image is unused, but it appears on a page.”
Restore or leave the item in place, then identify the reference format the scanner missed. Direct URLs, dynamic queries, external embeds and custom database fields are common reasons a visible image is not connected to a normal post relationship.
“There are WebP files with no Media Library entries.”
Do not treat that as proof of orphaning. The orphan-file listing specifically notes generated WebP files as an example of files that may exist outside normal records. Check the image-optimization workflow and browser requests before removal.
“Regeneration made the uploads folder larger.”
Regeneration creates derivatives for registered sizes. It is not a storage-cleanup scan. Review which sizes the active theme and plugins register, and only consider --delete-unknown after confirming that old sizes are not externally linked.
“A cleanup deleted a file permanently.”
Stop further changes, restore the file or attachment from your backup, clear relevant caches, and retest the affected URL. Keep a record of the missed reference so future scans can be configured or reviewed differently.
“The command times out on a large library.”
Do not repeatedly restart an untracked job. Use smaller, documented batches or a controlled command-line session supported by your host, monitor disk space and confirm which attachments completed before continuing.
11. A repeatable maintenance routine
After the initial cleanup, prevention is safer than another mass deletion.
- At upload time: use a descriptive filename, correct dimensions and meaningful metadata.
- After a redesign: list changed image sizes and regenerate only the derivatives the new design requires.
- After removing a plugin or builder: identify its generated formats and stored references before deleting anything.
- Monthly or quarterly: review storage growth, obvious duplicates and scanner candidates in small batches.
- Before each destructive run: refresh the database and uploads backup and confirm a recovery path.
- After each run: test representative pages, templates, galleries, logos and external delivery paths.
Final pre-delete checklist
- Have you identified whether the problem is an attachment record, an uploads file, a thumbnail derivative or file size?
- Is there a restorable database backup and a copy of the complete uploads directory?
- Have you checked the active theme, builder, widgets, custom fields, options, CDN and optimization workflow?
- Did you review candidates individually instead of equating “unattached” with “unused”?
- Does the chosen method provide trash, quarantine or another recovery route?
- For thumbnail work, have you confirmed the currently registered sizes and understood
--delete-unknownand--skip-delete? - Have you tested important public pages and retained recovery materials long enough to catch delayed failures?
A clean library is one you can search and maintain without sacrificing working URLs. Separate discovery, review, regeneration and optimization, and make permanent deletion the last step rather than the first.
