Secure a Linux VPS in this order: establish console-based recovery, make a restorable backup, inventory the host, patch it, remove unneeded services, create a least-privilege administrator, harden and validate SSH, enforce a default-deny firewall, and then test both the host configuration and its externally reachable ports. Repeat the tests after significant changes and retain the evidence.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What a secure VPS baseline looks like
A secure virtual private server is not defined by one setting or one scan. It has a recovery path that does not depend on the network, current security updates, a named administrative account, tightly controlled SSH access, only the network ports its applications need, and an auditable process for finding and fixing weaknesses.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For a game server, this usually means exposing the game listener and, where needed, HTTPS or a management endpoint—while keeping SSH restricted to your administration network. Never assume that a port is safe merely because the application is popular. Every public listener increases the attack surface and should have an owner, a purpose and a patch plan.
- Recovery: provider console or other out-of-band access, a restorable snapshot or backup, and a tested restore procedure.
- Updates: the distribution’s supported update process, with security updates monitored and reboots planned.
- Administration: a named account with only the sudo access required for maintenance; root is not used for routine remote work.
- SSH: key authentication where practical, restricted sources, reviewed authorized keys and syntax-tested configuration.
- Network policy: a default-deny firewall with explicit rules for required services.
- Assessment: authenticated configuration and package checks plus an external view of what an attacker can reach.
- Evidence: retained reports, rule sets, versions, remediation decisions and dates.
1. Establish recovery and inventory before changing anything
Remote hardening can lock you out. Ubuntu specifically warns that an incorrect SSH change can prevent the administrator from reconnecting, so make recovery independent of SSH before editing firewall or daemon settings.

Confirm a break-glass path
- Open and test the hosting provider’s serial, web or out-of-band console.
- Take a snapshot or backup that you can restore, and verify that the backup actually contains the system and application data you need.
- Record how to boot into recovery mode or attach the VPS disk to another instance if the provider supports it.
Do not close your current SSH session while testing a new rule or authentication method. Keep it available until a second session has logged in successfully and you have confirmed that the intended service still works.
Record the starting state
Capture the operating-system release and kernel, public and private addresses, local users, enabled services, listening sockets, installed applications and the ports required by each application. Useful inventory commands include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
cat /etc/os-release
uname -a
sudo ss -tulpn
sudo systemctl list-unit-files --type=service --state=enabled
getent passwd
sudo ufw status verbose
Keep this baseline with the date and hostname. It lets you distinguish an intentional change from a newly exposed service and gives a reference for later scans.
2. Patch the operating system and control its lifecycle
Apply distribution-supported updates before exposing the VPS. On Ubuntu Server, unattended-upgrades is installed by default, applies security updates automatically and normally runs daily. Automatic patching reduces the window in which a known flaw remains unaddressed, but it does not remove the need to review configuration, logs and reboot requirements.
Patch immediately, then verify
- Use the normal package update and upgrade process for the installed distribution.
- Check whether a kernel, OpenSSH package, libc or other foundational component requires a reboot.
- Review update history and any held or failed packages.
- Confirm that the services that matter to your game or web application restarted cleanly.
On Ubuntu, inspect the unattended-upgrades configuration and its logs rather than assuming the default is appropriate for your change-control needs. Confirm when it runs, which origins it accepts, and where failures are recorded. A security update that is downloaded but not installed, or installed but waiting for a reboot, is not an effective fix.
Balance automatic updates with availability
Automatic security updates and planned maintenance solve different problems. A VPS that hosts a persistent game world may require a scheduled restart, player notice and a backup before a kernel reboot. Define a maintenance window, test service startup, and monitor after reboot. If your policy cannot tolerate an unexpected restart, use staged maintenance and make the delay explicit rather than silently disabling security updates.

Align support with the installed release
| Ubuntu support option | Coverage stated by Ubuntu | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Standard LTS support | 5 years for Main packages | Plan an upgrade before that period ends or before your required packages leave support. |
| Ubuntu Pro | Up to 10 years for the stated Ubuntu security-support scope, including vulnerability patching for Universe | Useful when a server must remain on an LTS release longer, but it does not replace application upgrades and configuration review. |
Use the benchmark that matches the exact Ubuntu release installed. CIS publishes release-specific Ubuntu benchmarks; a profile for another release can produce misleading failures or omit relevant controls.
3. Remove unnecessary software and exposure
Every enabled daemon, package and listening socket is a potential entry point. After patching, compare the inventory with the services the VPS actually needs. Disable and uninstall components that are not required, but document the change so that a future administrator knows it was intentional.
Check processes and sockets
Compare systemctl list-unit-files --type=service --state=enabled with sudo ss -tulpn. Investigate listeners bound to all addresses (0.0.0.0 or ::) when they only need to be reachable locally or from a private management network. Bind administrative dashboards, databases and metrics endpoints to loopback or a private interface where the software supports it.
Separate game traffic from administration
Publish only the game ports documented by your server software and any explicitly required web or API ports. Keep SSH, databases, control panels and monitoring interfaces off the public interface when possible. If a service must be public, protect it with its own authentication, updates and logging; a firewall rule alone does not make a vulnerable service safe.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Build a least-privilege administration path
Create a named administrator instead of using root for routine work. Grant only the sudo permissions needed to maintain the host. A separate account makes audit logs meaningful and allows you to revoke one person’s access without changing a shared credential.
Create and review the account
- Create a personal or role-based account using the distribution’s supported user-management command.
- Add it to the administrative group only if that level of sudo is necessary; otherwise use a narrowly scoped sudoers rule.
- Install the administrator’s public key in that account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keyswith ownership and permissions that prevent other users from modifying it. - Open a second SSH session as the new account and run a harmless sudo command to verify the intended rights.
Review authorized keys periodically. Remove keys for people, automation or providers that no longer need access, and keep private keys in protected storage with a passphrase where practical.

Decide how root and passwords fit your threat model
Disable direct root login and password-based SSH only after key-based access and console recovery have been tested. The right setting depends on the account-recovery plan, automation and provider tooling. A blanket change made without a working alternate path can turn a hardening step into an outage.
5. Harden SSH and validate it safely
OpenSSH provides the encrypted server daemon and client tools used for remote control and file transfer. Configure the daemon in /etc/ssh/sshd_config or an appropriate file under /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/, and make one change at a time.
Recommended Free Tools
Apply a controlled SSH change
- Back up the current configuration and note the account and source network that must retain access.
- Set key authentication and the root-login and password-login policy that your recovery plan supports.
- Restrict administrative access by source address or management network when feasible. Network restriction is stronger when paired with keys and least privilege.
- Check the complete configuration before restarting:
sudo sshd -t. - If the syntax check succeeds, restart or reload the service using the distribution’s service manager.
- From a separate terminal, connect using the new policy. Only then end the original session.
sshd -t catches syntax errors, not every policy mistake. A syntactically valid rule can still block the wrong network or account, which is why the second-session test and console access are essential.
When SSH access fails
- Use the provider console rather than repeatedly guessing over the network.
- Inspect the daemon’s status and authentication logs for rejected keys, permissions, source restrictions or a failed restart.
- Restore the last known-good configuration if necessary, run
sudo sshd -tagain, and retry from the approved source. - Check that the firewall permits the port and that an upstream provider firewall or security group is not blocking it.
6. Enforce a default-deny firewall with UFW
Ubuntu’s default firewall configuration tool is ufw. Start with a policy that denies unsolicited inbound traffic and then add only the ports your services require. Keep an active SSH session while changing rules and test from another session before disconnecting.
Build the rule set
- Allow SSH from your approved management address or network when feasible rather than from every internet address.
- Allow the public game port or ports required by the particular server.
- Allow HTTPS or another web port only when an application actually listens there.
- Enable UFW after reviewing the planned rules.
- Inspect the result with
sudo ufw status numberedandsudo ufw status verbose.
UFW supports source-restricted allow and deny rules and a dry-run mode. Use the dry run to inspect the commands before applying them, especially when changing an existing policy. Remove obsolete rules by number after confirming that no service still depends on them.
Verify from inside and outside
On the host, compare the firewall rules with sudo ss -tulpn. From a separate network, test that the intended public service is reachable and that administrative or private services are not. An external check shows reachability, not whether the application is patched or correctly authenticated.

7. Test the VPS for vulnerabilities in complementary ways
No single scanner proves that a server is secure. Combine host-level evidence with an external network view, and review the output rather than treating a green summary as a verdict.
Local service and package checks
- Review listening sockets and enabled services after every major change.
- Check package status, pending security updates, held packages and reboot requirements.
- Inspect SSH, firewall, authentication and application logs for repeated failures or unexpected changes.
- Confirm file ownership and permissions for SSH keys, service configuration and backups.
These checks explain why a network port is open and whether the software behind it is maintained. They also reveal weaknesses that an unauthenticated internet scan cannot see.
Authenticated configuration assessment with OpenSCAP or SCC
NIST recommends using a compliance-checking tool such as SCC or OpenSCAP against the applicable CIS Benchmark or DISA STIG profile. Select a profile that matches the operating-system distribution and release; do not apply an Ubuntu profile to a Red Hat-family host or vice versa.
- Install the assessment tool and the content package appropriate to the distribution.
- Identify the exact benchmark or STIG profile name and version, and record it with the scan date.
- Run an initial evaluation and save the results.
- Review each failure, separating a genuine weakness from a control that conflicts with the server’s documented function.
- Remediate deliberately, testing game services and administrative access after each high-impact change.
- Run the evaluation again and retain both reports and the remediation decisions.
NIST’s example workflow uses commands of this form:
oscap xccdf eval --profile PROFILE_ID --results results.xml CONTENT_FILE
oscap xccdf remediate --results remediation-results.xml results.xml
Replace PROFILE_ID and CONTENT_FILE with the identifiers and content installed for your release. Treat automated remediation as a change proposal, not an unconditional fix: it can alter SSH, authentication, permissions or services in ways that interrupt a game server.
Red Hat-family systems
For Red Hat-family distributions, Red Hat documents remote OpenSCAP checking with oscap-ssh and configuration-compliance scanning. Use the profile and content supplied for the installed release, and retain the same evidence: tool version, profile version, date, findings and exceptions.

External network assessment
Scan from outside the VPS, ideally from a network that is not trusted by its firewall rules. Confirm which TCP or UDP ports are reachable, what protocol responds and whether services disclose unnecessary information. Schedule scans responsibly and ensure that your provider permits the activity. An external scan cannot see local package state, file permissions or a firewall rule that is currently inactive; it complements an authenticated configuration assessment rather than replacing it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →8. Interpret findings and avoid common testing mistakes
Prioritize by exposure and recovery impact
- Fix internet-reachable services with known security updates first.
- Next address authentication weaknesses, unrestricted administration and unexpected listeners.
- Then work through hardening controls, documenting any exception required by the game or hosting stack.
- Schedule changes that require a reboot or player downtime, and verify backups beforehand.
Understand false positives and exceptions
A benchmark failure is a control mismatch, not automatically an exploitable vulnerability. A game daemon may legitimately need a port that a generic profile expects to be closed. Record the reason, compensating controls, owner and review date instead of suppressing the finding without explanation.
Do not confuse reachability with safety
A closed port does not fix a vulnerable service that is reachable through another interface, and an open port does not by itself prove compromise. Correlate scan results with the process owner, package version, configuration and logs before deciding what to remediate.
9. Keep evidence and repeat the process
Security is a cycle, not a one-time setup. Store a dated record containing:
- OS release, kernel and package-update history.
- Benchmark or STIG name, content and profile version.
- OpenSCAP or SCC command, result files and remediation report.
- UFW rules, listening sockets and the approved public-port list.
- SSH configuration validation result, key inventory and access-review date.
- Backup or snapshot identifier and evidence of a restore test.
- Each finding, remediation, accepted exception, owner and due date.
Repeat the inventory and assessments after major package, kernel, OpenSSH, firewall or application changes, and on a defined periodic cadence. Re-run sooner when a critical security advisory affects software installed on the VPS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing the right assessment approach
| Approach | What it tells you | What it misses | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unauthenticated external scan | What an internet-based observer can reach and identify. | Local configuration, package state, file permissions and controls hidden behind authentication. | Validate firewall exposure and public attack surface. |
| Authenticated host assessment | Configuration, policy, package and benchmark compliance. | How the host appears from an untrusted network and provider-edge filtering. | Measure against a CIS Benchmark or DISA STIG and guide remediation. |
| Manual operational checks | Whether backups, recovery, service ownership and change procedures work in practice. | Broad automated coverage and standardized scoring. | Prevent lockouts and verify that hardening does not break the game or its administration. |
Choose tools according to five questions: does the profile match the distribution, how deep must the assessment be, can the change be recovered, what uptime and reboot constraints apply, and can the result be repeated and evidenced?
Practical maintenance schedule
| When | Actions |
|---|---|
| Before first exposure | Console access, restorable backup, inventory, patching, service reduction, SSH test and firewall test. |
| Daily or according to policy | Review automated-update status and logs; investigate failures. |
| Weekly or after notable activity | Review authentication and application logs, authorized keys, listening sockets and unexpected users or services. |
| After major changes | Repeat SSH syntax validation, firewall verification, service tests and an authenticated assessment where the change affects controls. |
| On a defined recurring cadence | Run the selected benchmark and external exposure check, compare with prior reports and close or document findings. |
| Before a required reboot or migration | Confirm backup integrity, maintenance communication, console access and automatic service recovery. |
Failure recovery checklist
- Locked out after SSH changes: use the provider console, restore the last known-good configuration, run
sudo sshd -t, inspect logs and retest from the approved network. - Firewall blocks administration: use console access to inspect
sudo ufw status numbered, add a narrowly scoped temporary rule, test a second session and remove the temporary rule afterward. - Game service fails after patching or reboot: check service status and logs, verify the listening socket and required firewall rule, then roll back only if the backup and change record support it.
- Scanner reports many failures: confirm the operating-system release and profile version first; prioritize exposed and high-impact controls, then rerun the scan after documented remediation.
- Unexpected public port: identify the owning process, stop or reconfigure it if unnecessary, add a firewall rule only when the service is required, and record the decision.
Bottom line
Patch first, administer through a tested least-privilege SSH path, expose only required services with a default-deny firewall, and verify the result with both an authenticated benchmark assessment and an external reachability check. Keep console recovery, backups and evidence ready before making remote changes, and repeat the cycle whenever the operating system, kernel, SSH, firewall or game application changes.
