To clear the cache most often meant by “Steam cache,” use Steam’s built-in Clear Download Cache option: Steam → Settings (or Preferences) → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. Steam says installed games are not affected, but you will be signed out and must log in again. The procedure may help with stalled downloads, failed updates, installation errors, and some games that will not start.
Have your Steam password and access to Steam Guard ready before you begin.

Before you clear the cache
- Save your progress and close active games.
- Make sure you know your Steam password.
- Keep access to your Steam Guard email or mobile authenticator.
- Understand that this is not the same as clearing your web browser, Windows, macOS, or game shader cache.
How to clear the Steam download cache
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam from the upper-left menu.
- Choose Settings. On some macOS clients, this is labeled Preferences.
- Open Downloads.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Clear Download Cache. Depending on the client language, it may have a similar label such as Clear Cache.
- Confirm the warning.
- When Steam returns to the login screen, sign in again.
Valve documents this procedure in its Steam Support instructions for clearing the download cache. Menu wording can vary by language, operating system, and Steam client version, so look for the cache control on the Downloads settings page.

What clearing the download cache does
The built-in control removes locally cached download-related data so Steam can retrieve fresh information from its servers. Valve lists it as a possible fix for games that will not download or start, as well as certain update and installation problems. It does not permanently make every download faster, repair every game file, or clear every type of Steam cache.

What it does not remove
Steam says that clearing the download cache does not affect games that are already installed. It is not the same as uninstalling Steam, and it does not delete your entire Steam installation.
However, Steam will require you to authenticate again, and active or queued downloads may need to be resumed or started again. Steam may also rebuild temporary download information. For that reason, do not treat the operation as a guarantee that every queue item or piece of temporary state will remain unchanged.

What to do after clearing it
- Sign in again and wait for Steam to finish reopening.
- Check the affected download, update, or game.
- Resume or restart a download if it is no longer active.
- Confirm that Steam has the intended library and download region selected.
- If only one game still will not launch, verify its installed files instead of repeatedly clearing the cache.
Which Steam cache or repair action do you need?
| Symptom | Best first action |
|---|---|
| A download is stuck, an update loops, or an installation will not begin | Clear Download Cache. |
| One game reports missing or corrupted files | Use Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. |
| The Steam Store or Community pages are blank or incorrectly rendered | Restart Steam, check for client updates, and investigate Steam WebHelper or embedded web data. |
| Games stutter or have rendering problems | Investigate shader data, graphics drivers, and game settings; download-cache clearing is not the general fix. |
| Steam cannot write to or update a library | Repair the Steam library folder and check permissions or drive health. |
| Downloads are slow or unavailable from one server location | Try another Download Region and check the network. |
Clearing the download cache and verifying game files are different operations. Cache clearing refreshes Steam’s download-related local data; file verification checks the installed content for a particular game.
If clearing the cache did not work
Follow these steps in order rather than clearing the cache repeatedly:

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Restart Steam.
- Restart the computer.
- Check that the drive has enough free space.
- Try a different Steam download region.
- Restart the router or test another network.
- Temporarily investigate interference from a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, or traffic-shaping program.
- Repair the affected Steam library folder.
- Verify the affected game’s files.
- Check the drive for errors, permissions problems, or signs of failing hardware.
- Contact Steam Support if the problem continues.
Valve’s installation and update troubleshooting guidance identifies download-region issues, library permissions, network hardware, firewalls, background software, storage errors, and system problems as possible causes.
If only one game will not start
Use Verify integrity of game files from the game’s Properties → Installed Files page. Also check for mods, third-party overlays, external launchers, anti-cheat requirements, and title-specific instructions from the game’s publisher. Clearing Steam’s download cache does not verify or repair all of a game’s installed files.

If Steam’s Store or Community pages are broken
Blank pages, broken images, or HTML and connection errors may involve Steam’s embedded web data or Steam WebHelper rather than the download cache. Restart Steam, check for updates, and determine whether the issue affects only Steam’s embedded pages. Valve has separate guidance for Steamwebhelper problems, including interface troubleshooting such as disabling GPU acceleration when WebHelper is not responding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The documented path applies to the Steam client’s settings interface, but labels and navigation can differ on Steam Deck and other SteamOS layouts. Look for the client’s Settings or Downloads section and the built-in Clear Download Cache control. If the control is not available in the interface you are using, do not delete random Steam folders; use Steam Support for platform-specific guidance.

Should you manually delete Steam cache folders?
Usually, no. The built-in button is safer and more consistent than manually deleting folders such as appcache, web-cache directories, or shader-cache data. Folder names and locations vary by operating system, installation path, library location, and client version. Do not delete game-library folders or the entire Steam installation as a substitute for clearing the download cache.
Manual cleanup is an advanced, version-sensitive step for a specific problem—not the normal solution to a stalled Steam download.
Bottom line
For most download, update, or installation problems, use Steam → Settings/Preferences → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. It should leave installed games in place, but it logs you out and may reset temporary download state. If the problem remains, move to the cause-specific fix: change the download region, repair the library, verify game files, or investigate your network, security software, storage, or Steam’s embedded web components.
