1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can move an installed Windows 10 system to a new SSD without reinstalling by cloning the complete source disk to the destination. A successful migration copies Windows, the boot files, recovery tools and the main data volume, then starts the computer from the new drive. The destination is erased during the operation, so identify both disks carefully, keep an independent backup, and do not wipe the old disk until the clone has booted and been checked.
What cloning a Windows 10 disk actually does
Disk cloning makes a direct copy of a source disk’s partition layout onto another disk. The result is intended to replace the original drive: after the first successful boot, the SSD contains the same Windows installation, applications, settings and files that were on the source at the time of cloning.

Windows normally separates boot information, the main operating-system volume and recovery tools into different partitions. A working migration therefore is not a matter of copying the C: drive in File Explorer. Macrium Software’s documentation states: “To create a working clone, you must clone all the system partitions.”
| Choose a clone when… | Choose a disk image when… |
|---|---|
| You are replacing the current system disk and want a directly usable copy. | You want a backup file that can be stored separately and restored later. |
| The new drive will become the computer’s working Windows disk. | You want a historical recovery point or an archive without leaving a second disk installed. |
Macrium publishes both workflows, but they solve different problems: a clone is a migration, while an image is a restorable backup. For irreplaceable documents, use an independent backup as well as the clone.

Check the source and target before you begin
Identify every partition on the Windows disk
Open Disk Management by pressing Win+X and selecting Disk Management (or run diskmgmt.msc). Locate the physical disk that contains Windows and note its disk number, capacity and partition order. Typical installations show an EFI System Partition on UEFI systems or a System Reserved partition on legacy installations, the large Windows volume and a recovery partition. Microsoft distinguishes these disk and system-partition roles in its Windows storage documentation.
Do not rely on drive letters alone. The target may already have a letter, and the recovery or EFI partitions may have none. Write down the source disk’s model and size so you can recognize it in the cloning wizard.
Confirm the destination can hold the data
Connect the SSD internally or with a compatible adapter or enclosure. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the clearest match for the documented Windows-to-SSD workflow. A laptop with one drive bay can use a SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure during the copy, followed by an internal installation after verification.

The destination does not have to have the same nominal capacity as the source. What matters is that the used data and the partitions you retain fit, and that the cloning program can resize partitions to the smaller layout. A larger destination can accept the existing layout and leave additional space available for expansion.
Make a separate backup
Copy documents, photos, saved games and other irreplaceable files to another device or location before opening the clone wizard. Cloning is not a substitute for a backup: a mistaken destination selection or a source failure can leave you without a recoverable copy.

Record firmware and partition style
Modern Windows 10 computers commonly use UEFI firmware with a GPT disk. Older installations may use legacy BIOS with MBR. Check the existing arrangement before changing anything. A clone can involve an MBR-to-GPT conversion in tools that support it, but the firmware boot mode must match the new partition style. Changing both at once without a plan is a common reason for a “no boot device” message.
Check encryption
If BitLocker or another volume-encryption product is enabled, save the recovery key and consult the current guidance for the cloning software you intend to use. Encryption can affect how partitions are read, copied and restored, and there is no single procedure that applies to every Windows 10 configuration.

1. Close programs and connect the target
Save work, close applications and connect the destination SSD. If you are using USB, use a reliable adapter with adequate power and avoid moving the cable during the copy. Allow Windows to detect the disk, but do not initialize or format it if the cloning application will manage the destination layout.
2. Start a disk-cloning workflow
Open a current cloning application, such as Macrium Reflect, and choose its disk-clone function rather than an image-only backup. The labels vary by release, so verify that the operation is described as cloning a disk to another disk.
3. Select the source by disk identity
In the source row, choose the physical disk that contains Windows. Check the model, capacity and partition map against the notes you made in Disk Management. Selecting an individual volume instead of the whole disk can omit boot information.

4. Select the destination and read the erase warning
Choose the newly connected SSD as the destination. Macrium warns that the target disk’s existing data and partitions are erased during cloning. Stop if the model or capacity does not match the disk you intend to overwrite; disconnect unrelated external drives if that makes identification easier.
5. Copy the complete partition layout
Use the application’s option to copy every partition from the source, including the EFI or System Reserved partition, the Windows volume and the recovery partition. If the wizard offers a “clone selected partitions” mode, add each of these explicitly. The recovery partition is useful for Windows repair tools even though it has no normal drive letter.
6. Resize partitions when the drives differ
For a smaller SSD, shrink the source Windows volume or use the wizard’s target-partition controls so the copied data fits. The destination’s total usable space must accommodate the retained data and required partitions. For a larger SSD, extend the Windows partition or leave the additional unallocated space for later use, depending on the layout offered by the software. Macrium documents resizing target partitions to fit a destination.
7. Review the summary and run the clone
Before confirming, review the source and destination model names, partition sizes and any resize operations. Start the clone and let it finish without disconnecting either disk. The duration depends on the amount of data, interface and drive speed; do not interrupt it because the progress appears slow.
8. Shut down and perform an isolated first boot
When the program reports completion, shut the computer down completely. For the first test, disconnect the old disk when practical. Leaving both copies attached can produce confusing drive letters or cause firmware to select the original boot entry. Install the SSD internally if it was connected by USB, then power on.

9. Select the new disk if firmware asks
If Windows does not start automatically, open the UEFI or BIOS boot menu during startup and select the new drive’s Windows Boot Manager. Use the same UEFI or legacy mode that matches the cloned disk’s partition style unless you deliberately completed a supported conversion.
10. Verify Windows before retiring the source
After Windows starts, confirm that your user profile, applications, documents and recovery options are present. Check Disk Management to ensure the SSD is the system disk and that its expected partitions exist. Restart once more, test essential programs and keep the original disk untouched until this verification is complete.
How to handle smaller and larger destination drives
Cloning to a smaller SSD
A smaller destination works only when the source’s used space and required partition structure fit within it. Remove or move large, nonessential files first, then shrink the Windows partition before or during the clone. The cloning wizard must be able to place the EFI/System Reserved, Windows and recovery partitions within the target’s boundaries; a smaller nominal capacity alone is not a problem if the layout can be reduced.
Cloning to a larger SSD
A larger drive can receive the same partition arrangement, but the extra capacity may initially appear as unallocated space. Use the cloning wizard’s resize control during migration, or extend the Windows partition after the first successful boot when the partition order permits it. Do not delete the recovery or boot partitions simply to create a larger contiguous volume.
GPT, MBR, UEFI and legacy BIOS: the boot compatibility check
GPT is normally paired with UEFI, while MBR is commonly paired with legacy BIOS. Confirm which combination the existing Windows installation uses before cloning. If the source remains GPT, boot the new disk in UEFI mode; if it remains MBR, use the corresponding legacy mode. A cloned disk can be perfectly copied yet fail to start when firmware is set to the wrong mode.

Some cloning products document an MBR-to-GPT conversion as part of the migration. Treat that as a planned conversion: verify that the application will create the required EFI boot partition and that your computer supports UEFI before changing the source or target arrangement. Keep the recovery key available when encryption is enabled.
Troubleshoot a Windows 10 clone that does not work
The computer says no boot device was found
- Power off and check that the new disk is connected securely.
- Open firmware setup and select the new disk’s Windows Boot Manager.
- Confirm that UEFI is used for a GPT clone and legacy mode for an MBR clone, unless you completed a documented conversion.
- Reopen the cloning project and check that the EFI or System Reserved partition was included.
Windows starts only when both disks are connected
Shut down and test with the old disk disconnected. If the SSD then fails, the firmware may still be using the original boot files or the clone may not contain the required boot partition. Re-run the clone with the complete layout and select the SSD’s boot entry explicitly.
The destination appears too small
Inspect used space rather than the source disk’s advertised capacity. Move large files elsewhere, shrink the source Windows volume, and use the wizard’s target-resize controls. If the copied data still cannot fit, a smaller destination is not suitable without further cleanup.
Drive letters look wrong after the copy
Windows can assign confusing letters when both identical installations are online. Disconnect the original disk for the first boot and allow the cloned installation to establish itself as the system drive. Reconnect the old disk only after verification, and avoid formatting it until you have confirmed that the SSD is reliable.
Files on the target disappeared
This is expected if that disk was selected as the clone destination: the operation erases its existing partitions and data. Restore those files from an independent backup if one exists. There is no safe undo for overwritten sectors.
BitLocker requests recovery information
Enter the saved recovery key and check the cloning product’s current encryption instructions. Repeated recovery prompts can indicate that firmware mode, boot measurements or the disk arrangement changed during migration; resolve those conditions before deleting the old installation.
When a clone is the wrong recovery method
Use an image instead when you need several restore points, an offline archive or a backup that can be stored away from the computer. A clone leaves a second bootable disk and is most useful immediately before replacing hardware. For either method, keep at least one independent copy of important files and verify that the recovery process you chose matches the failure you are preparing for.
Quick Recap
Final validation checklist
- The SSD is recognized by Windows and firmware.
- The Windows, boot and recovery partitions are present.
- The computer boots with the old disk disconnected.
- Your profile, applications and important files open normally.
- The partition style and firmware mode are intentionally matched.
- The original disk remains available until the new installation has passed repeated restarts.
